What is the PMI-CP certification and who is it for?

Is the PMI-CP worth it for construction professionals in Japan?

Yes. With a severe labour shortage, a job-to-applicant ratio near 4.6 and a pipeline of semiconductor fabs, data centres and seismic-retrofit work, Japanese contractors value certified construction project leaders. Construction PM roles average around ¥8.58M, with senior PMs near ¥13.4M. Talk to a learning advisor to plan your route.

Do I need a PMP before taking the PMI-CP?

No. PMP is not a prerequisite for the PMI-CP. You can apply based on your construction project management experience and education. The two are complementary, however, as PMP validates broad project management while the PMI-CP validates construction-specific expertise, and many professionals hold both.

How long is the PMI-CP valid and how do I renew it?

The PMI-CP is valid for three years. To maintain it, you earn 60 PDUs across the PMI Talent Triangle within each three-year cycle, with a minimum of 8 PDUs in each of Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen, reported through PMI's CCR system.

What standard is the PMI-CP based on?

The PMI-CP is based on the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline (ECO) and the PMBOK Guide Eighth Edition, applied to construction industry practices. The ECO defines the four domains and the tasks and enablers tested in the exam.

What is included in the PMI-CP training fee?

The training fee typically includes PMI-aligned courseware, scenario-based practice questions, mock exams, guidance on the four prerequisite modules and the PMI application, learner support, and a course completion certificate with contact hours. How much does the PMI-CP exam cost?

For reference, PMI lists the exam at around USD 520 for members and USD 670 for non-members; prices vary by region, so confirm current fees at pmi.org. PMI membership, around USD 139 per year, reduces the exam cost and gives access to PMI resources.

Is the exam fee included in the training price?

No. PMI bills the PMI-CP exam fee separately in USD, and you purchase and schedule it through PMI and Pearson VUE. The training fee covers your preparation, courseware and support, not the exam itself.

How many questions are on the PMI-CP exam and how long is it?

The PMI-CP exam has 120 questions and a total allotted time of 230 minutes (3 hours 50 minutes). It is closed book, using single-answer and multiple-answer multiple-choice questions across the four domains.

What are the PMI-CP exam domains and their weights?

There are four domains per the official ECO: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). Contracts management is the largest area, reflecting the centrality of contracts and claims in construction.

What is the passing score for the PMI-CP exam?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score that is not published as a fixed number. Results are reported as pass or fail with domain-level feedback of Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement, so aim for broad mastery across all four domains.

Where can I take the PMI-CP exam?

You can take the exam online through Pearson VUE's OnVUE proctoring system or at a Pearson VUE test centre, including centres in Japan. Scheduling is done through the Pearson VUE website or PMI's portal after your application is approved.

What happens if I do not pass the exam the first time?

You are allowed up to three attempts within the one-year eligibility window from application approval. Reexamination fees apply to later attempts. Our practice questions, mock exams and trainer support are designed to help you prepare thoroughly for your first sitting.

What topics does the PMI-CP training cover?

The training covers the four ECO domains: Contracts Management (contract types, administration, variations, claims and closeout), Stakeholder Engagement, Strategy and Scope Management (scope, schedule, cost, risk and quality) and Project Governance, plus exam strategy and application guidance.

What are the four mandatory prerequisite modules?

Before applying, you must complete four self-paced PMI modules in any order: Project Communications, Interface Management, Scope and Change Order Management, and Contract and Risk Management. Each is a 6 to 10 hour commitment and awards 14 PDUs, for 56 PDUs in total.

Does this training meet the PMI-CP education prerequisite?

The instructor-led programme provides 32 contact hours, which is close to but below the 35 contact hours of project management education PMI requires. Check with our team whether supplementary self-study or pre-reading is credited toward the 35-hour requirement for your application.

Is the courseware aligned with the latest PMI-CP syllabus?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline and the PMBOK Guide 8th Edition, so you prepare against the domains, tasks and construction practices the exam actually tests.

Are practice questions and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes scenario-based practice questions, topic-wise quizzes and full-length mock exams mapped to the 120-question format, helping you identify weak areas and build readiness across all four domains.

What are the eligibility requirements for the PMI-CP?

Eligibility has two parts. First, complete all four prerequisite modules. Second, meet one of three sets: a secondary diploma with 60 months of construction PM experience; a bachelor's degree with 36 months; or a GAC-accredited degree with 24 months. All sets need 35 contact hours of PM education.
