Is the PfMP worth it for professionals in Japan?

Yes. As Japan accelerates DX and modernises legacy systems, employers increasingly want certified portfolio leaders. Senior roles such as Head of PMO and Portfolio Manager command strong bands in Tokyo, and the PfMP is a globally recognised marker that helps you stand out.

Is the PfMP recognised in Japan?

Yes. PfMP is a globally recognised PMI credential valued by IT services, consulting, BFSI and manufacturing employers across Japan and worldwide, especially firms running large, strategy-critical project portfolios.

How long is the PfMP valid and how do I renew it?

PfMP is valid for three years. You maintain it by earning 60 PDUs across the PMI Talent Triangle within each three-year continuing certification requirements (CCR) cycle, with at least 8 PDUs in each area.

What standard is the PfMP based on?

The PfMP is based on the PfMP Examination Content Outline (ECO) and PMI's Standard for Portfolio Management, Fourth Edition. It covers five performance domains, from strategic alignment through governance, performance, risk and communications management.

What is the format of the PfMP exam?

The PfMP exam is a closed-book, multiple-choice examination based on the PfMP Examination Content Outline and the Standard for Portfolio Management, Fourth Edition. It uses scenario-based questions across five performance domains.

How many questions are on the PfMP exam and how long is it?

The exam has 170 questions and a four-hour (240-minute) allotted time. The questions are distributed across the five performance domains as set out in the PfMP Examination Content Outline.

What are the PfMP exam domains and their weights?

Five domains: Strategic Alignment (25%), Governance (20%), Portfolio Performance (25%), Portfolio Risk Management (14%) and Communications Management (16%).

What is the passing score, and what is the panel review?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score rather than a fixed percentage. Beyond the written exam, PfMP requires a panel review, a multi-rater assessment of your documented portfolio experience by practitioners; both the panel review and the exam must be passed.

Can I retake the PfMP exam if I do not pass?

Yes. PMI allows up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility window from application approval. Reexamination fees apply to later attempts; confirm the current amounts on pmi.org.

PMI offers three eligibility sets. All require a secondary or four-year degree plus 120 months (10 years) of business experience within the last 15 years, and 84, 48 or 36 months of portfolio management experience depending on your degree, confirmed through a panel review.
