Market Forces Driving Construction PM Demand in Yokohama

    Waterfront Redevelopment Complexity

Yokohama's Minato Mirai 21 and waterfront projects mix high-rise, mixed-use and public works under tight coordination, demanding the contract and stakeholder discipline the PMI-CP develops.

PMI-CP builds contract and stakeholder skills

GREEN X EXPO 2027 Deadline Pressure

The 2027 horticultural expo across the Seya and Asahi wards sets fixed opening dates over an 80 to 100 hectare venue, putting a premium on scope, schedule and governance rigour.

PMI-CP builds scope and schedule control

    Station-Area Redevelopment Coordination

Tokyu-led schemes at Fujigaoka and Aobadai integrate hospitals, retail and public plazas across multiple owners, the kind of interface-heavy delivery PMI-CP governance is built to manage.

PMI-CP builds governance and interface skills

    Seismic and Resilience Standards

Dense urban sites in Yokohama require seismic-resistant, disaster-resilient and increasingly green construction, raising the bar for risk management and regulatory compliance on every project.

PMI-CP builds risk and compliance skills

    Construction Labour Shortage

An ageing workforce and the 2024 overtime cap have tightened Japan's construction labour market, so employers prize project managers who can deliver reliably with leaner teams.

PMI-CP makes certified project leaders stand out

    Contracts and Claims Exposure

Large capital projects generate variations, delay claims and disputes, yet contract-management depth is scarce. PMI-CP's 50% Contracts Management focus targets exactly this gap.

    General

Is the PMI-CP worth it for construction professionals in Yokohama?

Yes. The PMI-CP validates construction-specific project management skill that leading Japanese and global contractors recognise. With Yokohama's waterfront redevelopment, station-area schemes and GREEN x EXPO 2027 build driving demand, credentialed construction leaders are well placed for senior roles and stronger pay.

What is the PMI-CP certification and who is it for?

The PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP) is PMI's specialist credential for people who deliver construction projects. It is built for construction project managers, site managers, contracts managers and owner's representatives who want a globally recognised, construction-specific qualification.

Which standard and edition is the PMI-CP based on?

The PMI-CP is based on the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline (ECO) and the PMBOK Guide Eighth Edition. Its four domains are Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%).

Is a PMP required before taking the PMI-CP?

No. The PMP is not a prerequisite for the PMI-CP. You can apply based on your construction project management experience and education. The two credentials are complementary, with the PMP covering general PM and the PMI-CP validating construction-specific expertise.

    Is the PMI-CP recognised internationally?

Yes. As a PMI credential, the PMI-CP carries global recognition across more than 200 countries. It is valued in international construction markets where clients and contractors look for globally recognised project management credentials alongside local qualifications.

    Exam

How many questions are on the PMI-CP exam and how long is it?

The PMI-CP exam has 120 questions and runs for 230 minutes, which is 3 hours 50 minutes. It is closed book with multiple-choice questions in single-answer and multiple-answer formats.

What are the PMI-CP exam domains and their weights?

There are four domains per the official ECO: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). Contracts Management is the largest, reflecting the centrality of contracts in construction.

What are the prerequisites for the PMI-CP?

You must complete four mandatory self-paced modules and meet one of three experience sets: Set A needs a secondary diploma plus 60 months construction PM experience; Set B a bachelor's degree plus 36 months; Set C a GAC-accredited degree plus 24 months. All sets require 35 contact hours of PM education.

What if I do not pass the PMI-CP on the first attempt?

PMI allows up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility period from application approval. Re-examination fees apply to later attempts. Our structured practice and mock exams are designed to help you prepare thoroughly and pass first time.

How long is the PMI-CP valid and how do I renew it?

The PMI-CP is valid for three years. To renew, you earn 60 PDUs across the PMI Talent Triangle within the cycle, with at least 8 PDUs in each area. The 56 PDUs from the four prerequisite modules can be applied toward renewal.

    Course Content

What will I learn in the PMI-CP training?

You will learn construction contract management, stakeholder engagement, strategy and scope management, and project governance, mapped to the four ECO domains. The training covers contract types, variations, claims, risk, governance and stakeholder engagement across the build lifecycle.

What are the four prerequisite modules?

Before applying, you complete four self-paced PMI-CP modules in any order: Project Communications, Interface Management, Scope and Change Order Management, and Contract and Risk Management. Each awards 14 PDUs, for 56 PDUs in total, and we guide you through them.

Are practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and full-length mock exams aligned to the 120-question, 230-minute PMI-CP format, plus topic-wise quizzes to help you find and fix weak areas before the exam.

Do I need prior construction experience to benefit?

The training suits mid to senior construction professionals, and prior construction project experience helps you get the most from it and is required to sit the exam. Site managers and engineers moving into project management are well supported throughout the programme.

Is the courseware aligned with the current PMI-CP syllabus?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline and the PMBOK Guide 8th Edition, so what you study reflects what the exam tests across all four domains.
