    The certification holds Current status for three years from the date you certify. To maintain it, you pass the recertification exam before the elapse date, or within 90 days after, to renew for another three years.

    What is the format of the Black Belt exam?

    The exam is closed book with 150 multiple-choice questions, each worth one mark. Some forms include up to 15 additional unscored questions. A reference document of formulas and tables is provided for use during the exam.

    How long is the exam and what is the passing score?

    You have four hours (240 minutes) to complete the exam, with extra time allowed for non-native speakers or candidates with a disability. The minimum passing score is 580 out of 750 points.

    How is the exam delivered?

    You can sit the exam online through a web-based proctored system available 24/7, or at one of the 8,000-plus PearsonVUE test centres across 165 countries, including locations convenient to candidates in Norway.

    What is the exam application process?

    After preparing, you can take an optional non-proctored evaluation exam to check readiness, then purchase the exam voucher from the IASSC orders site and choose your delivery mode. You schedule and sit the proctored exam, and on passing you receive a certificate, digital badge and a listing in the official register.

    What topics carry the most weight on the exam?

    Questions are spread across the five DMAIC phases: Define 13.5%, Measure 21.5%, Analyse 26.5%, Improve 16.5% and Control 22.0%. Analyse and Control carry the most weight, so focus your preparation accordingly.

    What will I learn in the Black Belt training?

    You will learn to lead full DMAIC projects, apply advanced statistics and hypothesis testing, run regression and Design of Experiments, perform measurement system and capability analysis, use Lean tools, and sustain results with Statistical Process Control.

    You receive structured courseware aligned to the Body of Knowledge, practice questions mapped to the exam format, full-length mock exams, an exam simulator, templates, quizzes and case studies relevant to process industry work.

    Can a beginner take this course?

    The Black Belt is an advanced level credential, so it suits those with some Lean or Six Sigma exposure, such as Green Belt holders. There are no formal prerequisites, and our trainers and practice materials help you build the statistical depth the exam expects.

    Yes. The programme includes practice questions, full-length mock exams and an exam simulator aligned to the 150-question, four-hour closed-book format, helping you identify weak areas and build exam readiness.
