Do I need a PMP before taking PMI-CP?

No. PMP is not a prerequisite for PMI-CP. You can apply based on your construction project management experience and education. The two credentials are complementary: PMP covers general project management, while PMI-CP validates construction-specific expertise.

Which standard is the PMI-CP exam based on?

The PMI-CP exam is based on the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline (ECO), which draws on the latest edition of the PMBOK Guide and construction industry practices. The ECO defines four domains: Contracts Management, Stakeholder Engagement, Strategy and Scope Management, and Project Governance.

How long is the PMI-CP certification valid?

PMI-CP is valid for three years. To maintain it, you earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) across the PMI Talent Triangle within each three-year cycle, with at least 8 PDUs in each area.

What is the format of the PMI-CP exam?

The PMI-CP exam is closed book with multiple-choice questions in single-answer and multiple-answer formats. It is delivered online through Pearson VUE OnVUE proctoring or at a Pearson VUE test centre.

How many questions are on the PMI-CP exam and how long is it?

The exam has 120 questions and an allotted time of 230 minutes (3 hours 50 minutes). It covers the four domains defined in the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline.

What are the four PMI-CP exam domains and their weights?

The four domains are Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%), as set out in the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline.

What is the passing score for the PMI-CP exam?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score rather than a fixed percentage. Results are reported as pass or fail with domain-level feedback of Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement, so aim for broad mastery across all four domains.

How many attempts do I get for the PMI-CP exam?

You get up to three attempts within the one-year eligibility period that begins when your application is approved. Re-examination fees apply to the second and third attempts.

What is the PMI-CP exam application process?

First complete the four mandatory prerequisite modules and meet one experience and education set, then apply online at pmi.org. PMI may audit your application; once approved, schedule your exam through Pearson VUE within the one-year eligibility window.

What topics does the PMI-CP training cover?

What are the four mandatory prerequisite modules?

Before applying, you complete four self-paced PMI-CP modules in any order: Project Communications, Interface Management, Scope and Change Order Management, and Contract and Risk Management. Each is a 6 to 10 hour commitment and awards 14 PDUs, for 56 PDUs in total.

Are practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and full-length mock exams aligned to the 120-question, 230-minute format, so you can identify weak areas and build exam readiness.

Is the courseware aligned to the current PMI-CP outline?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline and the latest edition of the PMBOK Guide, along with recognised construction project management practices.

Will I receive a certificate of completion?

Yes. After meeting the course requirements you receive a course completion certificate along with the contact hours earned through the programme, which support your PMI-CP application.

You complete the four prerequisite modules and meet one of three sets: Set A (secondary diploma, 60 months construction PM experience, 35 contact hours), Set B (bachelor's degree, 36 months, 35 hours), or Set C (GAC-accredited degree, 24 months, 35 hours), all within the past 10 years.
