QFD was developed in Japan by Yoji Akao and Shigeru Mizuno and first applied at Mitsubishi's Kobe Shipyard in 1972. It is now used worldwide in automotive, aerospace, pharmaceutical, electronics, healthcare and software product development.

Assessment

Is there an exam for this course?

No. This is a non-certification skills course with no examination. Learning is reinforced through hands-on House of Quality construction exercises, case studies and team discussion during the one-day programme.

Do I receive a certificate after the training?

You receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning once you complete the programme. No external credential or awarding body is involved, as QFD is a skills-based method rather than a certification scheme.

How is learning assessed during the course?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you apply the method through practical exercises, building and interpreting your own House of Quality matrices and completing VOC structuring and Kano classification activities throughout the day.

What will I be able to do after the training?

You will be able to capture and structure the Voice of the Customer, build a full House of Quality, calculate engineering priorities, resolve design conflicts using the roof, cascade QFD through four phases, and apply it within DFSS and DMAIC projects.

Is any awarding body or accreditation involved?

No. QFD is an established, vendor-neutral method with no single governing body, so the training is not tied to any external qualification. You gain practical, transferable skills and a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning.

Course Content

What topics does the QFD training cover?

The course covers QFD principles and its business case, the Voice of the Customer and Kano model, step-by-step House of Quality construction, interpreting the matrix for design priorities, the four-phase QFD cascade, and QFD in DFSS, DMAIC and service design.

What is the House of Quality?

The House of Quality is the central QFD planning matrix. It links customer requirements to engineering characteristics, scores their relationships, benchmarks against competitors, exposes design trade-offs in its roof, and sets measurable engineering targets.

Does the course apply to services as well as products?

Yes. While QFD began in manufacturing, the course covers applications in healthcare, financial services, IT and software, alongside physical product development. The House of Quality applies wherever customer requirements must become design or delivery specifications.

Are there hands-on exercises?

Yes. Hands-on House of Quality construction runs throughout the day, including VOC structuring with an affinity diagram, Kano classification, building a full matrix from a realistic scenario, and identifying design hot spots and conflicts.

How long is the training?

The programme is delivered in one day of eight hours, or as two extended half-days. It covers all six QFD modules with concept explanations, real-world examples and hands-on House of Quality exercises.
