Why Project Risk Skills Are in Short Supply in Tanzania

    Megaproject Risk Exposure

The USD 42 billion LNG project and the Standard Gauge Railway carry complex cost, schedule and regulatory risk, exactly the exposure structured project risk management is built to control.

PMI-RMP builds risk strategy and planning skills

    Mining and Critical-Minerals Risk

Nickel, gold and graphite developments must satisfy IFC Performance Standards and Equator Principles, demanding formal risk identification, analysis and response from certified professionals.

PMI-RMP builds risk analysis and response skills

    Climate and Environmental Risk

Heavy-rain damage that suspended SGR services in early 2026 shows why programmes need early-warning indicators, risk triggers and disciplined monitoring across the project lifecycle.

    PMI-RMP builds risk monitoring skills

    Banking and Regulatory Pressure

As Tanzanian bank profits and lending grow, regulators expect tighter risk governance on transformation and system-implementation programmes, raising demand for credentialed risk leaders.

PMI-RMP builds governance and thresholds skills

    Certified Risk Talent Shortage

Tanzania has many project managers but few specialists in project risk. PMI-RMP's specialist focus and prerequisite experience make holders rare and highly sought after.

PMI-RMP makes certified risk professionals stand out

    Economic and Fuel-Price Volatility

Fuel-price shocks that lifted Dar es Salaam prices sharply in 2026 make quantitative techniques such as Monte Carlo and contingency reserves essential for protecting project value.

    Identify Threats and Opportunities

Facilitate structured identification using brainstorming, the Delphi technique, SWOT, assumption and constraint analysis and a risk breakdown structure, then document risks clearly in the risk register.

    Analyse Risk Qualitatively and Quantitatively

Apply probability and impact matrices, then Monte Carlo simulation, decision-tree analysis, sensitivity analysis and expected monetary value to prioritise risks and model their effect on cost and schedule.

    Plan and Implement Risk Responses

Develop response strategies for threats (avoid, transfer, mitigate, accept) and opportunities (exploit, share, enhance, accept), assign owners, and build contingency and fallback plans and reserves.

    Monitor and Close Risks

Track triggers and residual and secondary risks, run periodic risk reviews, report risk status to stakeholders, and formally close risks while capturing lessons for future programmes.

Apply Risk Tools Across Delivery Approaches

Work confidently with risk audits, reserve analysis, tornado diagrams, heat maps and earned-value techniques in predictive, agile and hybrid environments, reflecting the current exam content outline.

The PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) is PMI's specialist credential in project risk management. The credential suits project risk managers, senior project managers with a risk focus, PMO and risk analysts, risk consultants, and professionals in high-risk sectors such as construction, mining, energy and financial services who want a globally recognised risk specialisation.

No. A PMP is not a prerequisite. You can apply for PMI-RMP directly based on your risk management experience and education, though many holders also hold a PMP because the two credentials are complementary.

The PMI-RMP is valid for three years. To maintain it, you earn 30 PDUs in risk management topics within each three-year continuing certification requirements cycle, reported through PMI's CCR system.

    Exam

What is the format of the PMI-RMP exam?

The PMI-RMP exam is closed book with 115 multiple-choice questions, using single-answer and multiple-answer formats. It is based on the PMI-RMP Examination Content Outline effective January 2022 and delivered online proctored via Pearson VUE OnVUE or at a Pearson VUE test centre.

How many questions are on the PMI-RMP exam and how long is it?

The exam has 115 questions and a time limit of 2.5 hours (150 minutes). Questions are distributed across the five risk management domains defined in the exam content outline.

What are the PMI-RMP exam domains and their weights?

There are five domains: Risk Strategy and Planning (20%), Risk Identification (20%), Risk Analysis (23%), Risk Response (22%) and Monitor and Close Risks (15%), per the January 2022 ECO.

What are the eligibility requirements for the PMI-RMP?

There are three sets. Set A: a secondary diploma plus 36 months of risk management experience in the last 5 years and 40 hours of risk education. Set B and Set C: a bachelor's degree (Set C from a GAC-accredited programme) plus 24 or 12 months of experience and 30 hours of risk education.

What if I do not pass the exam on the first attempt?

PMI allows up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility period, and reexamination fees apply to later attempts. Our training, mock exams and practice questions are designed to build broad readiness across all five domains so you sit with confidence.

What is the passing score for the PMI-RMP exam?

PMI does not publish a fixed percentage pass mark. The result is set through psychometric analysis, with domain-level feedback reported as Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement, so aim for broad mastery across all five domains.

    Course Content

What will I learn in the PMI-RMP training?

You will learn to plan a risk strategy, identify threats and opportunities, run qualitative and quantitative analysis, plan and implement responses, and monitor and close risks. The syllabus covers all five PMI-RMP domains and applies to predictive, agile and hybrid projects.

Does the training satisfy the PMI-RMP education requirement?

The programme provides 32 contact hours, which fully satisfies the 30-hour risk education requirement for Set B and Set C candidates. Set A candidates need 40 hours and should add at least 8 further hours of risk training to meet the requirement.

Do I need prior experience to attend the training?

Anyone can attend the training. To sit the exam, PMI requires documented project risk management experience and education under one of its three eligibility sets. The course covers concepts from the ground up while preparing experienced professionals for the exam.

Are practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and full-length mock exams aligned to the 115-question, closed-book format, plus quizzes and templates to help you find weak areas and build exam readiness.

Is the courseware aligned to the current PMI-RMP standard?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the PMI-RMP Examination Content Outline effective January 2022 and the PMI Practice Standard for Project Risk Management, covering predictive, agile and hybrid risk management.
