    Is Value Stream Mapping training worth it?

    Yes. VSM is the core diagnostic tool behind almost every Lean improvement programme, and the skill applies immediately at work. In Portugal's export-led manufacturing and growing service sectors, professionals who can map and improve flow are in steady demand.

    Who should attend this training?

    The course suits operations and manufacturing managers, Lean practitioners, process and industrial engineers, Six Sigma practitioners, supply chain managers and anyone responsible for improving end-to-end flow. No prior Lean background is required.

    Do I need any prior experience or qualifications?

    No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste and flow is helpful but not required, as the course introduces every relevant concept in the context of mapping.

    What method is the training based on?

    The training follows the established VSM method rooted in the Toyota Production System and set out by Mike Rother and John Shook in Learning to See (1998). It uses the standard VSM symbol set recognised by Lean practitioners worldwide.

    Is this a certification course?

    No. This is a practical, non-certification skills course. You receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning and, more importantly, a skill you can use straight away in your own operations.

    Is there a test at the end of the course?

    No. This is a practical skills course with no examination. You practise by building real current-state and future-state maps during the session, and learning is reinforced through group exercises rather than a test.

    How am I assessed during the training?

    There is no formal assessment. Instead, you apply each concept through mapping exercises, creating both a current-state and a future-state map for a realistic scenario so you leave able to do the work, not just describe it.

    Do I receive a certificate?

    Yes. You receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning after finishing the one-day programme. It records your participation and the skills covered.

    Will I be able to apply VSM straight after the course?

    Yes. The course is built around doing. By the end you can select a product family, walk the value stream, build current and future-state maps, and produce an improvement plan you can take back to work immediately.

    How is learning reinforced without a test?

    Through hands-on practice and discussion. You map real scenarios, analyse them as a group, and design future states, which embeds the method far more effectively than a written test.

    Course Content

    What topics does the training cover?

    The programme covers six modules: Lean foundations and VSM concepts, the standard VSM symbols, creating the current-state map, analysing it for waste, designing the future state, and implementation planning and sustaining improvement.

    What are the eight wastes covered in the course?

    You learn the eight Lean wastes, remembered as DOWNTIME: Defects, Overproduction, Waiting, Non-utilised talent, Transportation, Inventory, Motion and Extra processing, and how a value stream map reveals each one.

    Will I learn both current-state and future-state mapping?

    Yes. You build a current-state map to capture how the value stream works today, analyse it to find waste and bottlenecks, then design a future-state map using the eight future-state questions.

    Is the course hands-on?

    Very. Throughout the day you practise mapping with realistic exercises, creating both current-state and future-state maps and an implementation plan, so the skills are ready to use at work.

    How long is the training?

    The programme runs for one day (about 8 hours), and can also be delivered as two half-days. It covers all six modules with hands-on mapping practice throughout.
