What Is Quality Function Deployment and Why It MattersUntitledA Customer-Driven Design Method

Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a structured, customer-driven method for translating the Voice of the Customer into specific engineering and process characteristics at every stage of product and service development. This Quality Function Deployment training in Portugal gives your teams the practical toolkit to do exactly that, built around the House of Quality (HoQ) matrix first developed in Japan by Yoji Akao and Shigeru Mizuno. Over one focused day, you learn how to capture and structure customer needs, classify them with the Kano model, and build the six rooms of the House of Quality: from customer requirements and engineering characteristics to the relationship matrix, the correlation roof, competitive benchmarking and engineering targets. You then cascade those outputs through the four QFD phases, from product planning to parts deployment, process planning and production control. The programme suits product designers, design and quality engineers, product managers, R&D professionals and Six Sigma practitioners across Portugal's automotive, aerospace, electronics and medical device sectors. It is a practical, skills-focused course, so you leave able to run a Voice of the Customer workshop and build a working House of Quality for one of your own products.

What Is Driving Demand for QFD Skills in Portugal

    Export Quality Pressure

Advanced manufacturing is Portugal's largest exporting industry, selling into over 200 markets. Meeting demanding customer and OEM specifications makes structured customer-driven design a core competitive skill.

    QFD builds customer-to-specification translation skills

    Automotive APQP Traceability

Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers around Volkswagen Autoeuropa, Bosch and Continental must show customer requirement traceability in APQP and IATF 16949 audits, the exact discipline QFD is built to provide.

    QFD builds requirement traceability skills

    Rising Design Rework Costs

Late design changes and warranty costs erode margins in a high-mix manufacturing base. QFD surfaces design conflicts through the correlation roof before expensive prototypes are ever built.

    QFD builds early conflict-resolution skills

    Aerospace and Medical Rigour

Portugal's growing aerospace and medical device sectors face stringent customer and regulatory requirements that must flow cleanly into engineering, process and control specifications through a structured method.

QFD builds structured requirement flow-down skills

    Cross-Functional Alignment Gaps

Customer intent is often lost in the handoff from marketing to engineering. The House of Quality gives product, quality and R&D teams one shared, transparent planning matrix to work from.

    QFD builds shared planning-matrix skills

    Scarce QFD Facilitation Talent

Many teams know quality tools but few can facilitate a full House of Quality workshop. Professionals who can lead VOC-to-design translation are rare and valued as design maturity rises.

QFD makes skilled facilitators stand out

    Assessment

Is there an exam for this QFD course?

No. This is a practical, non-certification skills course with no exam. Learning is reinforced through hands-on House of Quality construction exercises, case studies and team discussion during the programme.

What will I receive on completing the training?

You receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning. The training builds practical QFD and House of Quality skills that you can apply immediately to product development, service design and improvement projects.

How is learning assessed during the course?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you apply what you learn through practical activities, including building a House of Quality, calculating column importance, and identifying design hot spots and conflicts.

Will I be able to apply QFD at work straight away?

Yes. By the end of the programme you can facilitate a Voice of the Customer workshop, build and interpret a House of Quality, and cascade requirements through the four QFD phases on your own products or services.

Does QFD support Design for Six Sigma work?

Yes. QFD is a core tool in the DFSS DMADV Measure phase and the DMAIC Define phase. The course shows how the House of Quality outputs feed CTQ flow-down and concept selection in improvement and design projects.

    Course Content

What topics are covered in the QFD training?

The course covers QFD foundations and the business case, Voice of the Customer capture, the Kano model, full House of Quality construction across six rooms, HoQ interpretation, four-phase QFD cascading, and QFD in DFSS, DMAIC and service design.

    How long is the training?

The programme is delivered in one day (eight hours), with concept explanations, real-world examples and hands-on House of Quality exercises running throughout. A two half-day format is also available.

    Are the sessions hands-on?

Yes. Hands-on exercises run throughout, including VOC structuring with an affinity diagram, Kano classification, full House of Quality construction from a realistic scenario, and column importance calculation.

    What materials are provided?

You receive structured course materials, House of Quality templates, worked examples and reference guides that support the exercises and help you apply QFD after the training.

Does the course cover the full four-phase QFD cascade?

Yes. Beyond the House of Quality, the course covers parts deployment, process planning and production control, so you can trace a requirement from customer need all the way to a production quality control.

Can the course be delivered onsite for our team?
