The Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP) is PMI's most senior portfolio credential, for professionals who align portfolios of programmes and projects to organisational strategy. It suits portfolio managers, PMO heads, directors of delivery and senior practitioners with substantial portfolio experience.

Is PMP or PgMP required before PfMP?

No. Neither PMP nor PgMP is a prerequisite for PfMP. Eligibility is based on general business experience and portfolio management experience rather than prior PMI certifications, though many senior portfolio managers do hold one or both.

Is the PfMP recognised internationally?

Yes. As a PMI credential, PfMP carries global recognition across more than 200 countries and is regarded as a benchmark for portfolio management. It is valued by Luxembourg employers and by senior employers and government bodies worldwide.

How long is the PfMP certification valid?

PfMP is valid for three years. To maintain it, you earn 60 PDUs across the PMI Talent Triangle, with at least eight PDUs in each area, within every three-year continuing certification requirements (CCR) cycle.

What if I do not pass the PfMP exam first time?

How many questions are on the PfMP exam and how long is it?

The PfMP exam has 170 multiple-choice questions and a four-hour (240-minute) allotted time. It is closed book and delivered via Pearson VUE OnVUE online proctoring or at a test centre.

What is the PfMP panel review?

The panel review is a multi-rater assessment unique to PfMP. A panel of portfolio management practitioners evaluates your documented experience and competency. It is mandatory alongside the written exam, and both must be passed to earn the credential.

What is the passing score for the PfMP exam?

PMI does not publish a fixed percentage pass mark. The result is set through psychometric analysis, with domain feedback reported as Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement, so aim for broad mastery across all five domains.

Which standard is the PfMP exam based on?
