What Is the PMI-CP Certification and Where It Fits in KenyaUntitledYour Route into Construction Project Leadership

The PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP) is the Project Management Institute's specialist certification for the construction industry, and PMI-CP certification training in Kenya prepares you to apply project management skills across the full construction lifecycle. It validates your ability to deliver complex building, civil and infrastructure projects on time, within budget and to the required quality standards. The programme is built around the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline (ECO) and its four domains, Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%), and draws on the current edition of the PMBOK Guide as its underlying reference. You learn to manage contract types and delivery methods, administer variations and claims, engage owners and communities, and govern schedule, cost, risk and quality at scale. With Kenya investing heavily in roads, the SGR extension, energy transmission and affordable housing, employers increasingly seek construction project managers who hold a globally recognised, construction-specific credential. Delivered in live virtual and corporate formats, this training gives site leaders, contracts managers and consultants a clear, supported path from learning to certification.

Why the PMI-CP Credential Pays OffCareer Value for Kenya's Construction Professionals

    For Individuals

    For Individuals

PMI-CP training helps construction professionals prove their ability to deliver projects in a construction environment, not just manage generic projects. It suits site managers, project engineers, quantity surveyors and consultants who want a construction-specific credential recognised by employers. Whether you are moving from site engineering into project management, leading contractor delivery, or representing an owner on roads, housing or civil works, this training builds capability aligned to senior expectations across Kenya's construction sector.

If you want to lead complex construction projects with a credential employers trust, PMI-CP is a clear step forward. You gain construction contract, stakeholder and governance knowledge, application guidance, and a structured route to certification that travels across sectors and borders.

    • Validates construction-specific project management skill beyond a general PM credential
    • Positions you for construction project manager, contracts manager and PMO roles
    • Builds deep contracts, claims and variation management capability, the largest exam domain
    • Strengthens stakeholder engagement with owners, regulators and communities
    • Provides a globally recognised PMI credential valued across East Africa and the Gulf
    • Sharpens governance of schedule, cost, risk and quality on live projects
    • Supports progression into senior delivery and owner's representative roles
    • Helps you stand out in a market short of certified construction leaders
    For Organizations

    For Organizations

PMI-CP group training helps construction firms, contractors and public agencies build a shared, construction-specific delivery language. The training can be delivered for project teams, PMOs or engineering departments across building, civil and infrastructure works. For organisations facing delays, variations and margin pressure, this training equips teams to administer contracts, manage stakeholders and govern delivery with greater consistency.

If your organisation struggles with stalled projects, claims and weak project execution, PMI-CP team training creates a common approach to contracts, scope, risk and governance. Teams gain a standardised way to plan, control and close construction projects.

    • Builds consistent construction delivery practice across project teams
    • Reduces cost overruns and disputes through stronger contract administration
    • Improves owner, regulator and community stakeholder engagement
    • Standardises governance, reporting and risk practice across projects
    • Strengthens claims readiness and change-order discipline on live works
    • Supports delivery of housing, roads and infrastructure programmes
    • Enables tailored training aligned to your project portfolio
    • Develops in-house construction project leadership and succession

Construction PM Roles and Demand in KenyaWhy PMI-CP Pays Off

Construction-specific project management skill is in growing demand across Kenya as national roads, the SGR extension, energy transmission and the BETA affordable housing programme expand the project pipeline. Employers increasingly separate certified construction leaders from generalist project managers, and PMI warns of a widening construction talent gap in the region. Demand sits from site and project manager level up to contracts manager, construction manager and project director, and here is what the market is telling us right now.

Industry Challenges Driving PMI-CP Demand in Kenya

    Weak Delivery Stalls Capital Projects

The IMF estimates nearly half of more than 1,000 government projects have stalled, needing close to Sh1 trillion to finish. Certified construction leaders are hired to close that execution gap.

PMI-CP builds construction delivery and governance skill

    A 57% Construction Talent Gap

PMI warns Sub-Saharan Africa faces a 57% shortfall in construction professionals by 2035. Holders of a construction-specific PM credential become rare and sought-after in this market.

PMI-CP makes certified construction PMs stand out

    Contracts and Claims Drive Overruns

Half of the PMI-CP exam is contracts management for good reason. Poor contract administration, variations and disputes are a leading cause of cost and schedule overruns on Kenyan projects.

PMI-CP builds contracts and claims management skill

    Mega-Infrastructure Complexity

The SGR extension, LAPSSET corridor and multi-billion expressways demand construction-grade prioritisation, risk aggregation and cross-stakeholder coordination at scale.

PMI-CP builds risk and coordination skill

    Affordable Housing at Scale

Kenya's BETA affordable housing programme targets large annual delivery volumes, and rapid roll-out needs disciplined scope, schedule and governance from qualified construction managers.

PMI-CP builds scope, schedule and governance skill

    Rising Costs and Compliance Pressure

High material costs, currency volatility and growing compliance requirements squeeze margins, pushing firms to control risk and optimise delivery through stronger project management.

    What Our Learners Say

    Untitled

Contracts Focus Made All the Difference

"The contracts management module changed how I handle variations and claims on site. Half the PMI-CP exam is contracts, and the trainer's real examples from road projects made the concepts stick. I passed and now lead a bigger delivery team."

A Clear Path from QS to PM

"As a quantity surveyor moving into project management, I needed a construction-specific credential. The training mapped clearly to the four domains and the mock questions matched the real exam style. The guidance on the four prerequisite modules saved me a lot of time."

    Practical and Directly Applicable

"Strong sessions on stakeholder engagement and governance. Working as an owner's representative on a housing scheme, the stakeholder and reporting content applied directly to my day job. Well structured and practical throughout."

    Standardised Our Delivery Practice

"We trained a group of site and contracts managers ahead of a major civil works programme. The team now shares a common language for contracts, change orders and governance, and our claims handling has improved noticeably. Delivery and coordination were excellent."

Right Fit for a Construction Team

"As a delivery director I sponsored PMI-CP training for our project managers. The flexible virtual schedule fit around live sites, and the construction-specific focus was exactly what a general PM course misses. We have seen tighter scope and risk control since."

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

Yes. PMI-CP is a construction-specific PMI credential that validates your ability to deliver complex projects, which employers increasingly value as Kenya invests in roads, housing and infrastructure. With a regional construction talent gap and many stalled projects, certified construction leaders are in demand and command strong salary bands.

    General

Is the PMI-CP certification worth it for construction professionals in Kenya?

Yes. PMI-CP is a construction-specific PMI credential that validates your ability to deliver complex projects, which employers increasingly value as Kenya invests in roads, housing and infrastructure. With a regional construction talent gap and many stalled projects, certified construction leaders are in demand and command strong salary bands.

What is the PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP) certification?

PMI-CP is the Project Management Institute's specialist certification for the construction industry. It validates project management skill in a construction environment across four domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%).

    Who should take PMI-CP training?

PMI-CP suits construction project managers, site managers, project engineers, quantity surveyors, contracts managers, owner's representatives and construction consultants. It is an advanced, construction-specific credential for professionals delivering building, civil or infrastructure projects.

    Is PMP required before PMI-CP?

No. PMP is not a prerequisite for PMI-CP. You can pursue PMI-CP based on your construction project management experience and education. The two are complementary, with PMP covering general project management and PMI-CP validating construction-specific expertise.

    Is the PMI-CP recognised internationally?

Yes. As a PMI credential, PMI-CP carries global recognition across PMI's network in over 200 countries. It is valued in Kenya, across East Africa and in international construction markets such as the Gulf where employers seek globally recognised delivery credentials.

    Pricing

How much does PMI-CP training cost in Kenya?

Instructor-led PMI-CP training in Kenya is quoted on request and varies by format and cohort. The fee typically covers PMI-aligned courseware, practice questions, mock exams and learner support. The PMI exam fee is billed separately. Contact a learning advisor for a quote.

What does the training fee include?

The training fee usually includes PMI-aligned courseware mapped to the four domains, practice questions, mock exams, guidance on the four mandatory prerequisite modules and the PMI application, and post-training learner support. The PMI exam fee is not included.

How much is the PMI-CP exam fee?

The PMI exam fee is billed in USD and is separate from training. For reference, PMI lists around USD 520 for members and USD 670 for non-members, though prices vary by region. PMI membership can reduce the exam cost. Confirm current fees on pmi.org before applying.

Do you offer corporate or group pricing?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for construction firms, contractors and public agencies. It is ideal for upskilling project, site and contracts teams together. Contact us for a tailored group quote.

Are payment or instalment options available?

Yes. We accept major cards and bank transfers, and instalment options are available on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you and your team.

    Exam

What is the format of the PMI-CP exam?

The PMI-CP exam has 120 questions and a duration of 230 minutes (3 hours 50 minutes). It is closed book with single-answer and multiple-answer multiple-choice questions, based on the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline (ECO).

What are the PMI-CP exam domains and their weights?

There are four domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). The weighting shows why contracts, claims and delivery methods are central to the credential.

What are the prerequisites to sit the PMI-CP exam?

You must complete four mandatory self-paced modules (Project Communications, Interface Management, Scope and Change Order Management, and Contract and Risk Management, 56 PDUs in total) and meet one experience and education set: for example a bachelor's degree with 36 months of construction PM experience plus 35 contact hours of PM education.

What is the passing score, and can I retake the exam?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score rather than a fixed percentage, with domain-level feedback. You have up to three attempts within a one-year eligibility window from application approval, so focus on broad mastery across all four domains.

Where can I take the PMI-CP exam in Kenya?

You can sit the exam online through Pearson VUE's OnVUE proctoring from home or office, or at a Pearson VUE test centre. Scheduling is done through the Pearson VUE website or PMI's portal within your eligibility period.

    Course Content

What topics does the PMI-CP training cover?

The training covers the four PMI-CP domains: contract types, delivery methods, administration, variations, claims and closeout under Contracts Management; owner, regulator and community engagement under Stakeholder Engagement; scope, schedule, cost, risk and quality under Strategy and Scope Management; and governance, reporting and compliance under Project Governance.

Which standard is the PMI-CP training based on?

The training is built around the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline (ECO) and draws on the current edition of the PMBOK Guide as its underlying project management reference, alongside construction industry-specific standards and practices.

Can I take this course if I am moving from site or QS roles into PM?

Yes. The programme suits experienced construction professionals progressing from site engineering, site management or quantity surveying into project management. Anyone can attend the training; the experience requirements apply when you apply to PMI for the exam.

Are practice questions and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and full-length mock exams aligned to the 120-question, closed-book format, plus topic-wise quizzes to help you find weak areas and build exam readiness across all four domains.

Does this training meet the 35 contact hours requirement?

The instructor-led programme provides 32 contact hours, which is close to but below the 35 contact hours of PM education PMI requires. Confirm with our team whether supplementary self-study or pre-reading is credited toward the 35-hour requirement for your application.

Do I need to complete the four modules before training?

The four mandatory self-paced modules are a PMI requirement completed before you apply for the exam, in any order. Our training prepares you for the exam and guides you on completing the modules and building your PMI application.
