What is the format of the PfMP exam?

The PfMP exam is a closed-book, multiple-choice examination based on the PfMP Examination Content Outline and the Standard for Portfolio Management, Fourth Edition. Questions are distributed across five performance domains and include scenario-based items.

How many questions are on the PfMP exam and how long is it?

The PfMP exam has 170 questions and a four-hour (240-minute) allotted time. It is delivered via Pearson VUE OnVUE online proctoring or at a Pearson VUE test centre.

What are the PfMP exam domains and their weights?

Five domains: Strategic Alignment (25%), Governance (20%), Portfolio Performance (25%), Portfolio Risk Management (14%) and Communications Management (16%). Together they make up the PfMP Examination Content Outline.

What is the passing score and what is the panel review?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score rather than a fixed percentage, with results reported by domain. Before the exam, all candidates complete a panel review, a multi-rater assessment of your documented portfolio experience by portfolio management practitioners. Both must be passed.

What happens if I do not pass, can I retake the exam?

Yes. PMI allows up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility period from application approval. Reexamination fees apply to the second and third attempts; confirm the current amounts on pmi.org.
