    Do I need to attend a course to earn the CSM?

    Yes. Attendance at a Scrum Alliance approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) is mandatory. The CSM exam cannot be accessed without completing an approved course.

    Which Scrum standard is the CSM based on?

    The CSM is aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, which introduced the Product Goal and the three commitments.

    What is the format of the CSM exam?

    The CSM exam is an open-book, online, multiple-choice test taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives.

    How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

    The exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a 60-minute time limit. It is taken online without a proctor, within 90 days of completing your course.

    What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

    You need 74% to pass, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly.

    How many attempts do I get?

    Candidates typically have three attempts to pass within 90 days of completing the course. Verify the current attempt policy at scrumalliance.org.

    What happens after I pass the exam?

    You accept the Scrum Alliance licence agreement, receive your CSM digital certificate and badge, and gain a two-year Scrum Alliance membership and directory listing.

    Course Content

    What topics does the CSM course cover?

    The course covers six areas: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum Team, the five Scrum events, the three Scrum artefacts, and the Scrum Master role, aligned to the current Scrum Guide.

    Can a beginner take the CSM course?

    Yes. There is no formal experience or education requirement. The course suits those new to Scrum and those formalising existing knowledge, with case studies and practice to build confidence.

    How long is the training and in what format?

    The programme runs for 16 hours, delivered as two full days or four half-days, in online (live virtual) or classroom formats led by a Certified Scrum Trainer.

    What learning materials are provided?

    You receive Scrum Alliance aligned courseware, industry case studies on Scrum facilitation and coaching, and structured exam preparation guidance.

    Will the course help me apply Scrum at work?

    Yes. The training focuses on real facilitation, impediment removal and coaching, so you can lead Sprint events and support your team from day one.
