The PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) is PMI's specialist credential in project risk management, covering risk strategy, identification, analysis, response, and monitoring. It is designed for project risk managers, senior project managers, PMO analysts and consultants who specialise in managing risk on projects and programmes.

Do I need a PMP before taking the PMI-RMP?

No. PMP is not a prerequisite for PMI-RMP. You can apply directly based on your project risk management experience and education. Many PMI-RMP holders also hold PMP, as the two credentials are complementary.

Is the PMI-RMP recognised internationally?

Yes. As a PMI credential, PMI-RMP is recognised by employers worldwide. It is particularly valued in high-risk industries such as construction, energy, defence and financial services, where formal project risk management is contractually or regulatorily required.

How long is the PMI-RMP certification valid?

The PMI-RMP is valid for three years from the date of certification. To maintain it, you earn 30 PDUs in risk management topics within each three-year continuing certification requirements (CCR) cycle.

What is the format of the PMI-RMP exam?

The PMI-RMP exam is a closed-book, multiple-choice examination based on the PMI-RMP Examination Content Outline effective January 2022. It uses single-answer and multiple-answer questions across five risk management domains, delivered via Pearson VUE online proctoring or at a test centre.

How many questions are on the PMI-RMP exam and how long is it?

The PMI-RMP exam has 115 questions and a duration of 2.5 hours (150 minutes). It is closed book and delivered by computer, either online proctored through Pearson VUE OnVUE or at a Pearson VUE test centre.

What are the PMI-RMP exam domains and their weights?

The exam covers five domains per the January 2022 ECO: Risk Strategy and Planning (20%), Risk Identification (20%), Risk Analysis (23%), Risk Response (22%) and Monitor and Close Risks (15%). Question difficulty is application and analysis, not simple recall.

What is the passing score for the PMI-RMP exam?

PMI does not publish a fixed percentage pass mark. The result is determined through psychometric analysis, and performance is reported by domain as Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement, so focus on broad mastery across all five domains.

What if I do not pass the PMI-RMP exam the first time?

You have up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility period from application approval. Our training includes exam-style practice and mock exams to build readiness, and our team can guide you on rescheduling a re-examination through PMI if needed.

What are the eligibility requirements for the PMI-RMP?

Anyone can enrol in the training. To sit the exam, PMI offers three sets: Set A (secondary diploma) needs 36 months of risk experience and 40 hours of education; Set B (bachelor's degree) needs 24 months and 30 hours; Set C (GAC-accredited degree) needs 12 months and 30 hours, all within the last five years.

What training formats are available in Canada?
