What Is Value Stream Mapping Training?UntitledA Practical Lean Skill for Barbados Teams

Value Stream Mapping Training in Barbados is a practical, one-day Lean course that teaches you to see the full flow of materials and information behind a product or service, spot where value is lost, and design a leaner way of working. Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a core technique from the Toyota Production System, popularised by Mike Rother and John Shook in their 1998 classic Learning to See, and it remains the starting point for almost every serious operational improvement effort. Across the eight-hour programme you build both current-state and future-state maps for a realistic operational scenario: walking the value stream, capturing cycle and changeover times, identifying the eight wastes of Lean, calculating takt time, and turning your future state into an implementation plan. There is no exam and no formal credential; you leave with a course completion record from Invensis Learning and a skill you can apply the next day. For operations, quality, engineering and supply chain professionals across Barbados, from rum and beverage production to cement, medical devices and logistics, VSM is one of the most practical improvement skills you can build. Start your Lean journey with Invensis Learning.

Why Barbados Operations Need Lean Flow Thinking Now

    High Energy and Import Costs

Barbados manufacturers face some of the region's highest energy and imported-input costs. Mapping the value stream exposes the waste and delay that quietly inflate unit cost, so teams can protect thin margins.

VSM exposes hidden cost in the flow

    Competing on Exports

Rum, food and manufactured goods must compete in demanding export markets. Value stream mapping helps producers shorten lead time and improve on-time delivery, turning flow efficiency into a real commercial advantage.

    VSM shortens lead time

    A Small, Stretched Workforce

With around 10,000 people in manufacturing, every hour counts. Value stream mapping reveals where effort is wasted on rework, waiting and over-processing, freeing scarce talent for value-adding work.

    VSM frees scarce talent

    Diversifying Beyond Tourism

As Barbados grows logistics, global business and light manufacturing, operations teams must scale without adding cost. Flow-based thinking is how lean organisations grow throughput on the resources they already have.

    VSM helps operations scale

    Manual, Ageing Processes

Many local operations still run on manual, batch-and-push workflows. A current-state map makes those bottlenecks visible for the first time and points clearly to the highest-impact fixes.

    VSM makes bottlenecks visible

    Scarce Improvement Skills

Barbados has few professionals trained to lead structured process improvement. People who can facilitate a value stream mapping workshop become the go-to problem-solvers in their organisation.

    VSM facilitators stand out

The Value Stream Mapping Skills You Will BuildFrom Current State to Future State

Skills covered in Value Stream Mapping training run from Lean foundations to a finished improvement plan. By the end of the one-day programme you can draw current-state and future-state maps, expose waste, and turn your analysis into practical action.

    See the Whole Value Stream

Define a value stream end to end and tell value-adding, non-value-adding and necessary work apart. You learn the five Lean principles and the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME) and how each shows up in real operations.

    Use Standard VSM Notation

Apply the standard value stream mapping symbols for process steps, material and information flow, inventory, kanban and data boxes, so your maps read clearly across any team or function.

    Draw the Current-State Map

Select a product family, walk the value stream on a Gemba walk, and capture cycle time, changeover time, uptime and inventory to build an honest picture of how work flows today.

    Analyse Waste and Bottlenecks

Read a completed map to find the eight wastes, locate the bottleneck, calculate takt time, and separate push from pull so you can target the highest-impact improvements first.

    Design the Future-State Map

Use the eight future-state design questions to create continuous flow, introduce pull systems and supermarkets, and quantify the lead-time and inventory gains your redesign delivers.

    Build an Implementation Plan

Translate your future-state vision into Kaizen events, metrics and a practical roadmap, and learn how to standardise and sustain the improvements you make.

Training That Actually Changed How Our Team Works

"As an L&D lead I look for training that changes behaviour, not just knowledge. This delivered. Our logistics team now uses value stream mapping as a shared method for improvement projects, and the onsite format fitted our schedule perfectly."

It is hands-on and tool-focused, and you can apply the skill straight away.

It suits operations and manufacturing managers, industrial and process engineers, Lean practitioners, Six Sigma professionals, supply chain and logistics staff, and anyone responsible for improving end-to-end flow. Teams from rum, beverage, cement, medical device, logistics and service operations across Barbados all benefit.

Yes. VSM is one of the most practical Lean skills you can build, because it turns everyday delays and rework into a clear, visual plan for improvement. It is valued wherever teams need to cut cost, shorten lead time and get more from limited resources, which describes most Barbadian operations today.

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste and flow is helpful but not required, as the course introduces every concept it uses. It is suitable for both newcomers to Lean and experienced improvement professionals.

A value stream is every action, value-adding and non-value-adding, needed to bring a product or service from concept to the customer. Value stream mapping makes that whole flow of materials and information visible in a single view, so you can see where value is lost and design a leaner way of working.

    General

What is Value Stream Mapping training?

Value Stream Mapping training is a one-day, non-certification Lean course that teaches you to create current-state and future-state maps, identify waste, and build practical improvement plans for the flow of value across your operations. It is hands-on and tool-focused, and you can apply the skill straight away.

Who should attend this course in Barbados?

It suits operations and manufacturing managers, industrial and process engineers, Lean practitioners, Six Sigma professionals, supply chain and logistics staff, and anyone responsible for improving end-to-end flow. Teams from rum, beverage, cement, medical device, logistics and service operations across Barbados all benefit.

Is Value Stream Mapping worth learning?

Yes. VSM is one of the most practical Lean skills you can build, because it turns everyday delays and rework into a clear, visual plan for improvement. It is valued wherever teams need to cut cost, shorten lead time and get more from limited resources, which describes most Barbadian operations today.

Do I need prior Lean experience to attend?

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste and flow is helpful but not required, as the course introduces every concept it uses. It is suitable for both newcomers to Lean and experienced improvement professionals.

What is a value stream and how does VSM help?

A value stream is every action, value-adding and non-value-adding, needed to bring a product or service from concept to the customer. Value stream mapping makes that whole flow of materials and information visible in a single view, so you can see where value is lost and design a leaner way of working.

    Pricing

How much does Value Stream Mapping training cost in Barbados?

Pricing varies by delivery mode, such as live virtual, classroom or corporate, and by group size. For current fees for individuals or teams in Barbados, request a quote and a learning advisor will share the options that fit you.

What is included in the course fee?

The fee covers the full one-day programme, expert instructor-led delivery, hands-on current-state and future-state mapping exercises, course materials, and a course completion record from Invensis Learning. Ask us for a detailed inclusions list when you enquire.

Do you offer group or corporate pricing?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised scheduling and volume-based pricing for operations, quality and supply chain teams. Group delivery is especially cost-effective because your team maps a real company process together. Contact us for a tailored group quote.

Are there payment or instalment options?

We accept major cards and bank transfers, and flexible options are available on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the arrangement that suits you or your organisation.

Can the training be arranged on request for a team?

Yes. In-house sessions can be scheduled on request around your team's availability, delivered onsite or live virtual anywhere in Barbados. Request a quote and we will propose dates and a format that work for your operation.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for this course?

No. Value Stream Mapping training is a non-certification course with no examination. Learning is reinforced through hands-on mapping exercises and group discussion during the day, rather than through a formal test.

Do I receive a certificate after the training?

You receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning after completing the programme. No formal credential is awarded by an external body, because VSM is a Lean technique rather than a certified qualification. The real outcome is a practical skill you can use immediately.

How am I assessed during the course?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you practise throughout the day by building current-state and future-state maps for realistic scenarios, so your learning is proven through doing rather than a written exam.

    Is this a certification course?

No. This is a practical skills course focused on the Value Stream Mapping technique from Lean and the Toyota Production System. It builds workplace capability and complements broader Lean programmes, but it does not carry a formal credential or awarding body.

What will I be able to do after completing the training?

You will be able to select a product family, walk the value stream to gather data, draw a current-state map with standard symbols, identify waste and bottlenecks, design a future-state map, and build an implementation and Kaizen plan to reach it. In short, you can facilitate VSM for your own team.

    Course Content

What topics does the Value Stream Mapping course cover?

The programme covers Lean foundations and the eight wastes, standard VSM symbols, building and analysing the current-state map, calculating takt time, designing the future-state map, and planning implementation. It follows the full VSM process from concept to a practical improvement roadmap.

Will I practise creating maps during the training?

Yes. Hands-on mapping is central to the day. You create both a current-state and a future-state map for a realistic operational scenario, so you leave having actually done the work, not just watched it explained.

What is the difference between a current-state and future-state map?

A current-state map shows how your value stream really operates today, including waste and delay. A future-state map shows the improved, leaner flow you design toward. Comparing the two quantifies the gains in lead time and inventory and becomes the business case for improvement.

    How long is the training?

The course runs for one day, around eight hours in total, covering all six VSM modules with concept explanations, symbol training, worked examples and hands-on mapping exercises throughout.

    What materials are provided?

You receive structured course materials covering the VSM symbol set, worked examples and mapping templates, plus the exercises used during the session. These give you reference material to facilitate value stream mapping in your own workplace afterwards.

You can enrol through the Invensis Learning website or by contacting our team. Choose your preferred format, confirm your place, and you will receive joining details and materials. Talk to a learning advisor if you would like help choosing dates.

    What delivery formats are available?

The course is available as live virtual instructor-led training, in-person classroom sessions, and customised corporate group training. You can pick the format that best fits your schedule and learning preference.

Can the course be delivered onsite in Barbados?

Yes. For teams, we deliver onsite or live virtual sessions across Barbados, scheduled around your availability. Onsite delivery lets your people map one of your own value streams during the training. Contact us to arrange a session.
