What Is QFD and Why It Matters in BarbadosUntitledA Customer-Driven Design Method

Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a structured, customer-driven methodology for translating the Voice of the Customer into specific engineering and design characteristics at every stage of product or service development. This Quality Function Deployment training in Barbados teaches you to apply it end to end, from capturing customer needs to building and interpreting the House of Quality matrix. Developed in Japan by Yoji Akao and Shigeru Mizuno and first applied at the Kobe Shipyard in 1972, QFD has become a standard planning method in automotive, aerospace, electronics, healthcare, food and beverage, and software design. Its core tool, the House of Quality, links what customers want to how a design will deliver it, so priorities and trade-offs are visible to the whole team. The course runs as a practical one-day (8 hour) programme covering the full four-phase QFD system: product planning, parts deployment, process planning and production control. It suits product designers, quality engineers, product managers and Six Sigma practitioners in Barbadian manufacturing, life sciences and service organisations. There is no exam. You leave with a course completion record from Invensis Learning and a toolkit you can use the next working day.

Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a structured, customer-driven method for translating the Voice of the Customer into specific engineering and design characteristics. Developed by Yoji Akao and Shigeru Mizuno and first applied at the Kobe Shipyard in 1972, its main tool is the House of Quality, which links what customers want to how a design will deliver it.

    General

What is Quality Function Deployment (QFD)?

Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a structured, customer-driven method for translating the Voice of the Customer into specific engineering and design characteristics. Developed by Yoji Akao and Shigeru Mizuno and first applied at the Kobe Shipyard in 1972, its main tool is the House of Quality, which links what customers want to how a design will deliver it.

Is QFD training worth it for professionals in Barbados?

Yes. As Barbados diversifies toward advanced manufacturing, life sciences and a growing design economy, employers value people who can design products and services around customer needs. QFD gives you a practical skill you can apply across manufacturing, food and beverage, and service organisations on the island.

Who should attend this QFD course?

The course suits product designers, design and quality engineers, product managers, marketing and R&D professionals, and Six Sigma practitioners. It is also ideal for cross-functional teams who want a shared method for turning customer requirements into design and process specifications.

What is the House of Quality?

The House of Quality is the central QFD planning matrix. It captures customer requirements, the engineering characteristics that satisfy them, the strength of each relationship, competitive benchmarking, and design targets, with a correlation roof that reveals conflicts between design goals. The course teaches you to build and interpret it step by step.

Do I need prior experience to learn QFD?

No. The course has no formal prerequisites and introduces QFD and the House of Quality from first principles. Some familiarity with product development or quality concepts is helpful but not required, so the training works for beginners and experienced professionals alike.

Course fees vary by delivery format, group size and whether the training is public or in-house, so pricing is available on request. Contact a learning advisor for a quote tailored to how you want to learn, whether as an individual or as a team.

What is included in the course fee?

The fee typically includes instructor-led training across all QFD modules, hands-on House of Quality exercises, structured courseware and learning resources, and a course completion record from Invensis Learning. Ask about the exact inclusions for your chosen format.

Do you offer corporate or group pricing?

Yes. We offer group and corporate rates for teams, with customised schedules and delivery. Training a cross-functional team together is especially effective, because you can build a House of Quality for one of your own products during the session. Ask about corporate pricing.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, and can discuss instalment or invoicing arrangements for corporate bookings. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you.

Is a one-day course good value?

Yes. The one-day (8 hour) programme is intensive and hands-on, so you leave able to run a House of Quality workshop and apply QFD at work immediately. For many teams, avoiding a single late design change or failed launch more than covers the investment. Request a quote to compare formats.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for the QFD course?

No. This is a non-certification skills course with no examination. Learning is reinforced through hands-on House of Quality construction exercises, worked case studies and team discussion during the one-day programme, rather than a formal test.

Do I receive a certification after the training?

No formal certification or credential is awarded, as QFD training has no external awarding body. You receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning that confirms you have completed the programme and built practical QFD and House of Quality skills.

How is my learning assessed during the course?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you practise throughout the day by structuring the Voice of the Customer, classifying requirements with the Kano model, and building and interpreting a complete House of Quality from a realistic product or service scenario.

How long is the QFD training?

The course runs as a practical one-day programme of about 8 hours, and can also be delivered as two half-day sessions. It covers QFD foundations, the Voice of the Customer, the House of Quality, the four-phase QFD system, and QFD in Six Sigma and service design.

Will the skills stay current after the course?

Yes. QFD is an established, stable methodology, and the House of Quality and four-phase QFD system remain the standard approach to customer-driven design. There is nothing to renew, and the skills are immediately applicable to product and service development projects.

    Course Content

What will I learn in the QFD training?

You will learn to capture and structure the Voice of the Customer, build and interpret the House of Quality, prioritise design decisions, resolve conflicts with the correlation roof, and cascade QFD through parts deployment, process planning and production control, including its use in DFSS and DMAIC.

What topics does the course cover?

The programme spans six modules: QFD principles and origins, the Voice of the Customer, building the House of Quality, interpreting the House of Quality, the four-phase QFD cascade, and QFD in practice across Six Sigma, services and software, with real case studies throughout.

Does the course include hands-on practice?

Yes. Hands-on exercises run throughout the day. You structure customer requirements with an affinity diagram, classify them using the Kano model, and build a full House of Quality, calculating column importance and identifying design hot spots and conflicts.

Does QFD apply to services as well as products?

Yes. Although QFD began in manufacturing, the course covers its use in services such as healthcare, financial services and hospitality, and in software design. The House of Quality applies wherever customer requirements must be translated into design or delivery specifications.

Is the course content up to date?

Yes. The content reflects current QFD practice, built around the House of Quality and the widely used four-phase QFD system of product planning, parts deployment, process planning and production control, with modern applications in DFSS and service design.
