    What method or standard is the VSM training based on?

    The training is grounded in Lean and the Toyota Production System, using the standard value stream mapping approach popularised by Mike Rother and John Shook in Learning to See (1998). You learn the widely used VSM symbol set, the eight wastes of Lean and the future-state design questions.

    Do I need Lean experience before joining the course?

    No. There are no prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste and flow is helpful but not required, because the course introduces every concept in the context of mapping. It is open to operations, engineering, quality and improvement professionals at any level.

    How long is the Value Stream Mapping training?

    The course runs for one day, a total of eight hours, and can also be delivered as two half-days. It covers Lean foundations, VSM symbols, current-state mapping, analysis, future-state design and implementation planning, with hands-on mapping exercises throughout.

    Assessment

    Is there an exam for the VSM training?

    No. This is a non-certification skills course with no exam. Learning is reinforced through hands-on mapping exercises and group discussion during the day, so you practise the method rather than sit a test.

    How is my learning assessed?

    There is no formal assessment. Throughout the day you build both a current-state and a future-state map for a realistic scenario, and the trainer gives direct feedback as you work, so you leave able to apply the method confidently.

    Do I receive a certificate after the course?

    Yes. On completing the programme you receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning. This recognises that you have completed practical value stream mapping training; it is not a formal certification, as VSM has no awarding body or exam.

    What will I be able to do after completing the training?

    You will be able to select a product family, walk a value stream and collect data, draw a current-state map with standard symbols, identify waste and the bottleneck, design a future-state map, and build an implementation roadmap and Kaizen plan to reach it.

    Does the VSM skill expire or need renewal?

    No. There is no certification to maintain and no renewal cycle. The mapping skills you learn are immediately applicable and stay useful across roles, sectors and organisations for the rest of your career.

    Course Content

    What topics does the VSM training cover?

    The course covers Lean foundations and the eight wastes, the standard VSM symbol set, creating and analysing the current-state map, calculating takt time, designing the future state with flow and pull, and implementation planning that sustains improvement through standard work.

    Will I practise creating maps during the course?

    Yes. The training is hands-on. You create both a current-state and a future-state value stream map for a realistic operational scenario, practising the symbols, data boxes, timeline and Kaizen bursts as you go, so the method sticks.

    What VSM symbols and tools will I learn?

    You learn the standard value stream mapping symbols for processes, material and information flow, inventory, kanban and Kaizen bursts, plus the data box and timeline. You also learn takt time, the value-added ratio and the future-state design questions.

    Is the courseware up to date with current Lean practice?

    Yes. The course uses the established, widely applied VSM method from Learning to See and current Lean practice. Because value stream mapping is a stable, proven technique, the content reflects how mapping is used today across manufacturing and service operations.

    Can a beginner take this course?

    Yes. The course is beginner-friendly and needs no prior Lean training. It introduces every concept in the context of mapping and builds up through guided exercises, so newcomers and experienced practitioners both leave able to map a real value stream.
