    Poka Yoke was developed by Shigeo Shingo within the Toyota Production System and set out in his 1986 book Zero Quality Control: Source Inspection and the Poka-Yoke System. It is now a recognised part of Lean, Six Sigma, ISO 9001 and Total Quality Management practice.

    Course Content

    What topics does the Poka Yoke course cover?

    The course covers the cost of defects, human error analysis, Poka Yoke classification (prevention and detection types; contact, fixed-value and motion-step methods), the six-step design process, real-world case studies and implementation planning.

    What is the difference between prevention and detection Poka Yoke?

    Prevention-type (control) Poka Yoke makes an error impossible or stops the process, the strongest form of mistake-proofing. Detection-type (warning) Poka Yoke signals that an error has occurred so it can be fixed before it becomes a defect.

    How long is the Poka Yoke training?

    The course runs for one day (about eight hours), covering all six modules with concept explanations, case studies and hands-on exercises. It can also be delivered as two half-days to suit team schedules.

    Does the course include practical exercises?

    Yes. Hands-on error identification and Poka Yoke design exercises run throughout the day, so you practise the techniques on realistic process scenarios rather than only learning the theory.

    Does Poka Yoke apply outside manufacturing?

    Yes. While it originated in manufacturing, Poka Yoke applies to healthcare, logistics, financial services, food and beverage and IT. The course includes case studies from several sectors to show how mistake-proofing works in each.
