The Forces Making PMI-CP Skills Valuable in Malawi

    Delivering Donor-Funded Programmes

The World Bank's US$3.36B IDA portfolio and multi-donor trust funds demand rigorous governance, controls and reporting, the exact discipline the PMI-CP is built to instil in construction leaders.

PMI-CP builds project governance and reporting skills

    Hydropower and Energy Megaprojects

The Mpatamanga Hydropower Storage Project, valued above US$1.5B, plus grid upgrades need contract, risk and interface management at a scale few local project managers have been trained for.

PMI-CP builds contract and interface management skills

    Contract and Claims Complexity

Large capital works bring complex contracts, variations and disputes. With Contracts Management weighted at 50% of the exam, the PMI-CP is built to manage claims and protect value.

PMI-CP centres on contracts management at 50%

    Land-Linked Transport Corridors

As a land-linked economy, Malawi is investing in trunk roads, bridges and border crossings that require cross-stakeholder coordination and portfolio-grade scheduling across long corridors.

PMI-CP builds stakeholder and coordination skills

    Scarcity of Certified Construction PMs

Malawi's contractor base is expanding faster than its pool of credentialed construction project managers. The PMI-CP's rigorous prerequisites make holders rare and sought after.

PMI-CP makes credentialed leaders stand out

    Community and Regulatory Pressure

Public infrastructure faces community, environmental and regulatory scrutiny. The PMI-CP's stakeholder engagement domain equips leaders to secure approvals and maintain the licence to operate.

    After PMI-CP

Fluent in contract administration, claims and portfolio-grade governance

Recognition rests on tenure, not a portable credential

Contract disputes and variations handled reactively

    Now you have

The skills to manage contracts, claims and risk proactively

Recognition fades when you change employer or country

    Now you have

A globally recognised credential that travels across sectors and borders

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

The PMI-CP is PMI's specialist credential for construction, validating your ability to deliver complex projects across four domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). It suits construction project managers, engineers and PMP holders.

    General

What is the PMI-CP certification and who is it for?

The PMI-CP is PMI's specialist credential for construction, validating your ability to deliver complex projects across four domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). It suits construction project managers, engineers and PMP holders.

Is the PMI-CP worth it for construction professionals in Malawi?

Yes. With Malawi scaling donor-funded roads, energy and building programmes, credentialed construction project managers are scarce and in demand. Project manager roles average around MK 7.5M a year, with senior and director bands reaching far higher, and the PMI-CP helps you access them.

Is the PMP required before taking the PMI-CP?

No. The PMP is not a prerequisite for the PMI-CP. You can pursue the PMI-CP based on your construction experience and education. The two are complementary: the PMP validates general project management while the PMI-CP validates construction-specific expertise.

How long is the PMI-CP certification valid?

The PMI-CP is valid for three years. To maintain it, you earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) across the PMI Talent Triangle within each three-year continuing certification requirements (CCR) cycle, with at least 8 PDUs in each area.

Is the PMI-CP recognised in Malawi?

Yes. As a PMI credential, the PMI-CP carries global recognition through PMI's network across more than 200 countries. It is valued in Malawi and international construction markets where clients and contractors seek recognised project management credentials on capital projects.

    Pricing

What is included in the PMI-CP training fee?

The training fee typically includes PMI-aligned courseware, practice questions and mock exams, guidance on the four prerequisite modules and the PMI application, learner support, and a course completion certificate with contact hours. Request a quote for the full inclusions.

How much does PMI-CP training cost in Malawi?

Instructor-led PMI-CP training in Malawi is quoted locally and varies by format and cohort, so pricing is available on request. The PMI exam fee is billed separately by PMI in USD and is not part of the training fee. Talk to a learning advisor for a tailored quote.

How much is the PMI-CP exam fee?

PMI bills the exam fee in USD under regional pricing, for reference around USD 520 for members and USD 670 for non-members. PMI individual membership (about USD 139 a year) lowers the exam fee. Confirm current fees on pmi.org before applying.

Do you offer group or corporate discounts for PMI-CP training?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for construction teams, PMOs and site leadership groups in Malawi. Ask about corporate or group pricing for a tailored quote.

What payment methods and instalment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, and offer instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the payment option that suits you.

    Exam

What is the format of the PMI-CP exam?

The PMI-CP exam has 120 questions to be completed in 230 minutes (3 hours 50 minutes). It is closed book with multiple-choice questions in single-answer and multiple-answer formats, based on the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline.

What are the PMI-CP exam domains and their weights?

The exam covers four domains per the official ECO: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). Contracts Management is the largest, reflecting the centrality of contracts in construction.

What is the passing score for the PMI-CP exam?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score that is not published as a fixed number. Results are reported as pass or fail, with domain-level feedback of Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement. Aim for broad mastery across all four domains.

How many attempts do I get and where can I sit the exam?

You get up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility window from application approval. The exam is delivered online via Pearson VUE OnVUE proctoring or at a Pearson VUE test centre, so you can sit it from Malawi or worldwide.

What if I do not pass the PMI-CP on the first attempt?

You can retake the exam, up to three attempts within the one-year eligibility period, with re-examination fees applying to later attempts. Our practice questions, mock exams and trainer support are designed to help you build readiness before you sit.

    Course Content

What topics does the PMI-CP training cover?

The training covers the four PMI-CP domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%), plus the PMI application and exam strategy. It is aligned to the current ECO and the PMBOK Guide.

What are the four mandatory prerequisite modules for the PMI-CP?

Before applying, all candidates complete four self-paced PMI-CP modules in any order, each awarding 14 PDUs (56 total): Project Communications, Interface Management, Scope and Change Order Management, and Contract and Risk Management. We guide you on completing them.

Does this training meet the 35 contact hours requirement?

The instructor-led programme provides 32 contact hours, which is close to but below the 35 contact hours of project management education PMI requires across all eligibility sets. Ask us how supplementary self-study or pre-reading can be credited toward the 35-hour threshold.

Are practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and full-length mock exams aligned to the 120-question, 230-minute format, plus topic-wise quizzes, so you can identify weak areas and build exam readiness across all four domains.

Is the courseware aligned to the latest PMI-CP syllabus?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline and the PMBOK Guide, so you study the four domains and tasks exactly as the exam tests them.

    Enrollment

What are the eligibility requirements for the PMI-CP?

Eligibility has two parts: complete the four prerequisite modules, and meet one experience set. Set A: secondary diploma plus 60 months construction PM experience; Set B: bachelor's plus 36 months; Set C: GAC-accredited bachelor's plus 24 months. All sets need 35 contact hours of PM education.

How do I enrol in the PMI-CP course?

You can enrol through the Invensis Learning website. Choose your preferred format, complete payment, and you will receive access to schedules, courseware and learning resources. Anyone can enrol in the training; the experience requirements apply when you sit the exam.

    What training formats are available?

We offer live online (live virtual) instructor-led training, classroom training, and customised corporate group training, so you can choose the format that fits your schedule and site commitments in Malawi. See upcoming batches or talk to an advisor.

How soon can I start the PMI-CP training?

New cohorts run regularly across live online and classroom formats. Once you enrol you get immediate access to schedules and resources. Speak with a learning advisor to find the next batch that suits your timeline.

What is the refund or reschedule policy?

Refunds and cancellations follow our published policy, and selected plans let you reschedule or transfer to another batch. Contact our team for the details that apply to your enrolment before your cohort begins.
