What Is the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification?UntitledAn Advanced Path to Process Excellence

The Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (LSSBB) is an advanced quality management credential that validates your ability to lead complex, data-driven improvement projects across all five DMAIC phases: Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control. Awarded by the International Association for Six Sigma Certification (IASSC), now part of PeopleCert, it is an independent, globally recognised mark of process excellence. In Japan, the home of the Toyota Production System and kaizen, employers increasingly want improvement leaders who can pair that heritage with advanced statistics. The credential suits senior quality engineers, operations managers and continuous improvement specialists working in automotive, electronics, pharmaceuticals, finance and logistics. Delivered in live virtual, classroom and corporate formats, the training takes you from advanced statistical methods and Design of Experiments to Lean tools and statistical process control. Market Forces Driving Demand for Black Belts in Japan

    Ageing Workforce, Shrinking Talent Pool

Japan's labour force is contracting as the population ages, forcing firms to do more with fewer people. Black Belts unlock productivity by removing waste and redesigning processes.

    Black Belt skills lift productivity

    Defending a Reputation for Quality

Japanese brands compete on quality, and a single recall can damage decades of trust. DMAIC discipline helps teams cut defects and hold tight tolerances at scale.

    DMAIC reduces defects and variation

    Pressure to Accelerate Digital Transformation

Japan's DX agenda pushes firms to modernise operations, but technology alone rarely fixes broken processes. Black Belts redesign the process first, then digitise what works.

Black Belt links process to DX

    Lean's Birthplace, Rising Global Rivalry

Lean began with the Toyota Production System, yet global competition keeps raising the bar. Certified Black Belts bring statistical rigour that extends Japan's kaizen heritage.

    Advanced statistics extend kaizen

    Lagging Service-Sector Productivity

Productivity in Japanese services trails manufacturing and global peers. Lean Six Sigma methods bring measurable improvement to banking, healthcare, logistics and back-office work.

    Improvement tools lift service output

    Scarcity of Certified Black Belts

Japan has deep Green Belt and kaizen experience but far fewer credentialed Black Belts. The advanced exam and statistical depth make certified leaders rare and sought-after.

    Certification makes you stand out

    Exam

What is the format of the Black Belt exam?

The exam is a closed-book, multiple-choice examination based on the IASSC Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Body of Knowledge, structured around the five DMAIC phases. A reference document with required formulas and tables is provided.

How many questions are on the exam and how long is it?

The exam has 150 multiple-choice questions and runs for four hours (240 minutes). Some forms include up to 15 additional unscored questions that do not count towards your result.

What is the passing score for the Black Belt exam?

You need a minimum of 580 points out of 750 to pass. Focus on broad mastery across all five DMAIC phases rather than any single area.

    How is the exam delivered?

You can sit the exam through online proctoring on demand, available around the clock, or at a Pearson VUE test centre. Both options are available in Japan and worldwide.

What is the exam application process?

Review the Body of Knowledge, optionally take the non-proctored evaluation exam to check readiness, then purchase your exam voucher online and choose online proctoring or a test centre. You schedule and sit the 150-question exam, and on passing you receive a certificate, a digital badge and a register listing.

What happens if I do not pass the first time?

You can retake the exam by purchasing another voucher. Our training includes mock exams and practice questions so you can identify weak areas and prepare with confidence before you sit it again.

Are there practice tests and mock exams?
