What Is Root Cause Analysis, and Why It MattersUntitledA Skill Every Quality Team Needs

Root Cause Analysis (RCA) Training in Japan is a practical, one-day skills programme that teaches professionals how to investigate a problem, defect, incident or failure, find its true underlying cause, and put corrective actions in place that prevent it from happening again. Instead of firefighting the same issues month after month, you learn a structured way to fix them permanently. The training moves you beyond symptoms and immediate triggers to the fundamental cause, using a full toolkit: the 5 Whys, the Fishbone (Ishikawa) diagram, Fault Tree Analysis, FMEA in the RCA context, Pareto analysis, Is/Is Not analysis and the eight-discipline 8D method. It maps directly to the corrective-action requirement of ISO 9001:2015 (Clause 10.2), to the Analyse phase of Six Sigma DMAIC, and to CAPA in regulated industries. Built for Japan's quality-driven manufacturers, suppliers, hospitals and service teams, the course suits quality engineers, operations and process-improvement professionals, health and safety leads and IT incident managers. Delivered live virtual, in classroom or onsite for your team, it turns problem-solving from guesswork into a repeatable discipline you can use the very next day.

Why Japan's Industries Need Stronger RCA Skills

    Renewed Scrutiny After Certification Failures

The 2024 vehicle certification review saw regulators order 85 automakers and suppliers to report breaches, exposing weak corrective action. Employers now expect rigorous, evidence-based RCA.

    RCA rebuilds corrective-action discipline

Defect Recurrence in Tiered Supply Chains

Automotive and electronics makers run deep supplier tiers where a single quality escape ripples downstream. Structured 8D investigation and verified corrective action stop repeat failures.

RCA and 8D close the loop with suppliers

    Knowledge Loss as Veterans Retire

As experienced engineers leave an ageing workforce, tacit problem-solving knowledge goes with them. A shared RCA method turns individual instinct into a repeatable team capability.

    RCA captures problem-solving know-how

CAPA Pressure in Pharma and Devices

Pharmaceutical and medical-device firms must evidence root cause under GMP and regulatory audit. RCA provides the investigative backbone that a defensible CAPA process depends on.

    RCA underpins compliant CAPA

    Zero-Defect Expectations in Semiconductors

New fabs in Kumamoto and the Rapidus programme demand near-zero defect yields, where FMEA and Fault Tree Analysis are essential to anticipate and eliminate failure modes early.

RCA builds FMEA and FTA discipline

    Cost and Efficiency Pressure

With margins squeezed, manufacturers can no longer absorb repeated rework and scrap. Fixing the root cause once, rather than the symptom repeatedly, protects both cost and quality.

RCA cuts the cost of rework

The RCA Tools You Will MasterPractical Tools for Every Problem

This section shows the practical capabilities you build across the one-day programme. Each tool is taught with worked examples and hands-on exercises so you leave able to select and apply the right technique for the problem in front of you.

    Define Problems with Precision

Write clear, factual problem statements and use Is/Is Not analysis, timelines and evidence collection to scope an issue before you investigate, so the whole team works from the same facts.

Drill to the Cause with the 5 Whys

Apply the iterative 5 Whys questioning technique to move from an observable symptom to a systemic root cause, and recognise when an investigation has stopped too early at blame rather than a real cause.

Map Causes with the Fishbone Diagram

Facilitate a team-based Ishikawa workshop across the 6M cause categories, then drill each branch with the 5 Whys to surface the causes an obvious answer would miss.

Analyse Complex Failures with FTA and FMEA

Use Fault Tree Analysis with AND/OR logic for safety-critical events, and apply FMEA to identify failure modes and prioritise corrective actions using the risk priority number.

    Run a Full 8D Investigation

Work through all eight disciplines, from team formation and interim containment to root cause of occurrence and escape, permanent corrective action, prevention and closure, the format many OEMs expect.

    Build and Verify Corrective Actions

Develop effective corrective actions, distinguish verification from validation, and confirm that the root cause is gone, supporting ISO 9001 Clause 10.2 and CAPA in regulated industries.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

Root cause analysis (RCA) training is a practical, non-certification programme that teaches you to investigate a problem, defect or incident, identify its true underlying cause, and put corrective actions in place that prevent recurrence. It covers the 5 Whys, Fishbone diagram, Fault Tree Analysis, FMEA and the 8D method.

It suits quality engineers and managers, production supervisors, operations and process-improvement professionals, health and safety leads, IT incident and problem managers, and QA staff in pharma and medical devices. Anyone responsible for investigating problems and preventing recurrence will benefit.

Yes. Structured problem-solving is a valued, portable skill across Japan's automotive, electronics, pharmaceutical and machinery sectors, especially as employers tighten quality governance. You gain a practical capability you can apply the next day, from running 8D investigations to verifying corrective actions.

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with quality or process improvement helps, but the course introduces RCA principles and every tool from first principles, so newcomers and experienced professionals both benefit.

RCA underpins the corrective-action requirement of ISO 9001:2015 (Clause 10.2), the Analyse phase of Six Sigma DMAIC, and CAPA in regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals and medical devices. The training maps directly to these frameworks.

    General

What is Root Cause Analysis training?

Root cause analysis (RCA) training is a practical, non-certification programme that teaches you to investigate a problem, defect or incident, identify its true underlying cause, and put corrective actions in place that prevent recurrence. It covers the 5 Whys, Fishbone diagram, Fault Tree Analysis, FMEA and the 8D method.

Who should attend RCA training in Japan?

It suits quality engineers and managers, production supervisors, operations and process-improvement professionals, health and safety leads, IT incident and problem managers, and QA staff in pharma and medical devices. Anyone responsible for investigating problems and preventing recurrence will benefit.

Is RCA training worth it for my career?

Yes. Structured problem-solving is a valued, portable skill across Japan's automotive, electronics, pharmaceutical and machinery sectors, especially as employers tighten quality governance. You gain a practical capability you can apply the next day, from running 8D investigations to verifying corrective actions.

Do I need prior experience to attend?

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with quality or process improvement helps, but the course introduces RCA principles and every tool from first principles, so newcomers and experienced professionals both benefit.

    What standards does RCA support?

RCA underpins the corrective-action requirement of ISO 9001:2015 (Clause 10.2), the Analyse phase of Six Sigma DMAIC, and CAPA in regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals and medical devices. The training maps directly to these frameworks.

    Pricing

How much does RCA training cost in Japan?

Pricing depends on the delivery format, group size and whether you choose public or onsite corporate training, so it is available on request. Contact us for a tailored quote for your team or an individual seat on an upcoming batch.

What is included in the course fee?

The fee typically covers instructor-led delivery of all six RCA modules, structured courseware, hands-on tool exercises, case-study investigations and a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning. Ask a learning advisor for the full inclusions for your chosen format.

Do you offer corporate or group pricing?

Yes. We offer group and corporate rates for teams trained together, with volume-based pricing and customised schedules for quality, operations and cross-functional groups. Request a group quote and we will tailor it to your needs.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, with invoicing available for corporate bookings. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you or your organisation.

Is there a discount for training a whole team?

Yes. Onsite or live virtual group delivery is usually more cost-effective per person than individual seats, and lets the team practise on your own real problems. Contact us for group pricing.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for RCA training?

No. This is a non-certification course with no examination. Learning is reinforced through hands-on RCA tool exercises, case-study investigations and team discussion across the one-day programme.

Will I receive a certificate after the training?

Yes. You receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning once you complete the programme. It records your participation in the training; it is not an external certification, as none exists for this course.

How am I assessed during the course?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you apply each tool through practical exercises, such as an Is/Is Not problem definition, a 5 Whys investigation, a Fishbone workshop and an 8D report, on realistic scenarios during the session.

    Is this a certification course?

No. It is a practical skills training programme. There is no awarding body, credential or exam. The focus is on building problem-solving capability you can use immediately at work, backed by a completion certificate.

How is learning reinforced without an exam?

Through doing. You practise every technique on worked examples and case studies, complete a full 8D report for a realistic problem, and plan corrective actions and their verification, so the skills stick and transfer straight to your workplace.

    Course Content

What tools does the RCA training cover?

The course covers problem definition and Is/Is Not analysis, the 5 Whys, the Fishbone (Ishikawa) diagram, Fault Tree Analysis, FMEA in the RCA context, Pareto analysis and the full eight-discipline 8D method, plus corrective action and verification.

What will I be able to do after the training?

You will be able to define a problem precisely, apply the 5 Whys, facilitate a Fishbone workshop, use Fault Tree Analysis for safety-critical events, complete an 8D report, and develop and verify corrective actions that support ISO 9001 Clause 10.2.

How long is the RCA training?

The programme runs for one day (8 hours), covering all six modules from RCA principles and problem definition through the 5 Whys, Fishbone, FTA, FMEA and 8D to corrective action and building an RCA culture, with hands-on exercises throughout.

    Are there hands-on exercises?

Yes. Practical exercises and case-study investigations run throughout the day, so you apply each tool as you learn it. In corporate sessions, exercises can use your organisation's own real problems for immediate value.

Does it cover 8D and ISO 9001 corrective action?

Yes. The course teaches all eight disciplines of the 8D method and maps them to the corrective-action requirement of ISO 9001:2015 (Clause 10.2) and to CAPA in regulated industries, so you can meet audit and customer expectations.
