What Is Value Stream Mapping and Why It MattersUntitledA Practical Lean Skill for Spanish Operations

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean management technique for visualising the full flow of materials and information needed to bring a product or service from concept to customer. Value Stream Mapping training in Spain gives Lean practitioners, operations managers and engineers a practical, hands-on way to expose waste, bottlenecks and delay across the whole value stream, not just a single process. The technique is rooted in the Toyota Production System (TPS) and was made accessible to a wider audience by Mike Rother and John Shook in their classic work Learning to See (1998). Over one intensive day, you learn the standard VSM symbol set, walk the value stream to build an accurate current-state map, analyse it for the eight wastes of Lean, and design a future-state map that guides real improvement. This is a skills-focused, non-certification programme with no examination. Learning is reinforced through hands-on mapping exercises, and on completion you receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning. Delivered in live virtual, classroom and corporate formats, it suits professionals in automotive, aerospace, pharmaceutical, food and logistics operations who want a technique they can apply immediately.

    The Pressures Reshaping Spanish Operations

The EV Transition on the Line

Spanish plants such as Martorell, Almussafes and Pamplona are retooling for electric vehicles. Reconfiguring lines for new products needs value stream mapping to design leaner flow from the start.

VSM helps redesign flow for new products

    Reindustrialisation Under Way

With 76% of Spanish firms now holding a reindustrialisation strategy, leaders need a method to target investment. VSM maps the current state so improvement spend goes where the waste really is.

VSM shows where to invest for impact

    Energy Cost and Margin Pressure

High energy costs and tight margins push Spanish operations to remove non-value-adding work. Value stream mapping exposes overproduction, waiting and excess inventory that quietly erode profit.

    VSM builds waste-elimination skills

    Nearshoring and Supply Chain Reset

As production nearshores back to Spain, material and information flows are being rebuilt. Mapping the value stream end to end helps design pull, reduce inventory and shorten lead time.

    VSM improves end-to-end material flow

    Digitalising Without Mapping First

PERTE-funded Industry 4.0 projects risk automating existing waste. VSM gives teams a current-state and future-state view so digitalisation targets a leaner process, not a faster broken one.

VSM sequences Industry 4.0 the right way

    A Gap in Lean Facilitators

Spain has a deep base of skilled operators but fewer people able to facilitate value stream mapping across functions. Learning VSM makes you the person who can lead that improvement conversation.

What You Will Be Able to DoThe Core VSM Toolkit

You will learn the complete Value Stream Mapping method: how to build a current-state map, analyse it for waste and bottlenecks, design a future-state map, and plan the Kaizen work that delivers it. Every module is reinforced with hands-on mapping exercises so you can apply the skills at work straight away.

    Read a Full Value Stream

Understand what a value stream is end to end, distinguish value-added from non-value-added work, and apply the five Lean principles and the eight wastes (DOWNTIME) to real operations.

    Apply the Standard VSM Symbols

Use the standard value stream mapping symbol set for process boxes, material and information flow, inventory triangles, kanban, data boxes and Kaizen bursts so your maps are clear and consistent.

    Build an Accurate Current-State Map

Select a product family, walk the value stream (Gemba walk), capture cycle time, changeover, uptime and inventory, and complete the timeline that reveals lead time versus value-added time.

    Analyse Waste, Bottlenecks and Takt

Read the current-state map as a team to find the eight wastes, calculate takt time, identify the true bottleneck, and see where push flow creates overproduction and excess inventory.

    Design a Leaner Future State

Apply the eight future-state questions to design for continuous flow, introduce pull systems and supermarkets, redesign information flow, and quantify the improvement over current state.

    Plan and Sustain the Improvement

Turn the future-state map into an implementation roadmap, scope Kaizen events, set metrics from the current-state baseline, and standardise new ways of working so gains hold.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

Value Stream Mapping training is a one-day, non-certification skills course that teaches you to create current-state and future-state value stream maps, identify waste and bottlenecks, and plan improvements that optimise the flow of value across your operations. It is a practical Lean technique from the Toyota Production System.

Value Stream Mapping training is a one-day, non-certification skills course that teaches you to create current-state and future-state value stream maps, identify waste and bottlenecks, and plan improvements that optimise the flow of value across your operations. It is a practical Lean technique from the Toyota Production System.

Yes. As Spanish manufacturers modernise under PERTE and Industry 4.0 investment and the automotive sector retools for electric vehicles, employers value people who can see and redesign flow. VSM skills support Lean, continuous improvement and operational excellence roles across automotive, aerospace, pharma, food and logistics.

The course suits Lean practitioners, operations and manufacturing managers, process and industrial engineers, supply chain professionals and anyone responsible for improving end-to-end process flow. It is also a strong complement to Lean Six Sigma and Kaizen skills.

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste and flow is helpful but not required, as the course introduces every relevant concept in the context of mapping a value stream.

The training is grounded in Value Stream Mapping as developed within the Toyota Production System and made widely accessible by Mike Rother and John Shook in Learning to See (1998). There is no separate awarding body for the technique itself.

    General

What is Value Stream Mapping training?

Value Stream Mapping training is a one-day, non-certification skills course that teaches you to create current-state and future-state value stream maps, identify waste and bottlenecks, and plan improvements that optimise the flow of value across your operations. It is a practical Lean technique from the Toyota Production System.

Is Value Stream Mapping worth learning in Spain?

    Who should attend this training?

The course suits Lean practitioners, operations and manufacturing managers, process and industrial engineers, supply chain professionals and anyone responsible for improving end-to-end process flow. It is also a strong complement to Lean Six Sigma and Kaizen skills.

Do I need prior Lean experience to join?

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste and flow is helpful but not required, as the course introduces every relevant concept in the context of mapping a value stream.

Which method is the training based on?

The training is grounded in Value Stream Mapping as developed within the Toyota Production System and made widely accessible by Mike Rother and John Shook in Learning to See (1998). There is no separate awarding body for the technique itself.

    Pricing

How much does Value Stream Mapping training cost in Spain?

Fees vary by delivery mode, group size and format, so pricing is available on request. Contact a learning advisor for current public-schedule and corporate options, and ask about group pricing for teams in Spain.

What is included in the course fee?

The fee typically includes instructor-led training across all six VSM modules, hands-on current-state and future-state mapping exercises, course materials and templates, learner support, and a course completion record from Invensis Learning.

Do you offer group or corporate pricing?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for operations, quality and engineering teams. Request a tailored quote for your organisation.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, with instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you.

Is it better value to train a whole team?

Often, yes. Group delivery lets participants map one of your own value streams together and leave with a shared improvement plan, which usually delivers more workplace impact than training individuals separately. Ask about group pricing.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for this course?

No. This is a non-certification course with no examination. Learning is reinforced through hands-on mapping exercises and group discussion during the one-day programme.

What do I receive on completion?

You receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning. The training focuses on building practical VSM skills you can apply immediately, rather than preparing for a formal credential.

How is my learning reinforced without an exam?

Learning is reinforced through practical activity. You create both a current-state and a future-state map for a realistic scenario during the day, supported by trainer feedback and group discussion, so you leave able to apply the method.

Will I be able to lead a VSM workshop afterwards?

Yes. After the training you can select a product family, run a Gemba walk to collect data, draw a current-state map, analyse it for waste and bottlenecks, design a future state, and plan the Kaizen work to achieve it.

Does this help with Lean Six Sigma or Kaizen work?

Yes. VSM is a core diagnostic tool used in the Define and Measure phases of Lean Six Sigma projects and to scope Kaizen events. It complements Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt, Green Belt and Kaizen training well.

    Course Content

What topics are covered in the training?

The one-day programme covers six modules: introduction to VSM and Lean foundations, standard VSM symbols, creating the current-state map, analysing it, designing the future-state map, and implementation planning to sustain improvement.

Will I learn both current-state and future-state mapping?

Yes. You learn to build an accurate current-state map by walking the value stream, then design a future-state map using the eight future-state questions, and quantify the improvement between the two.

    Are the mapping exercises hands-on?

Yes. Hands-on mapping runs throughout the day. You practise capturing process data, drawing the timeline, calculating takt time and marking Kaizen bursts on a realistic operational scenario.

How long is the training and how is it delivered?

The course runs as a one-day, eight-hour programme, also available as two half-days. It is delivered in live virtual, classroom and corporate onsite formats across Spain.

    What materials will I receive?

You receive structured course materials, the standard VSM symbol reference, worked examples and mapping templates you can reuse in your own workplace, plus a course completion record on finishing.

    Enrollment

How do I enrol in the course?

You can enrol through the Invensis Learning website. Choose your preferred format, complete payment, and you will receive access to schedules, course materials and joining details. Talk to a learning advisor if you need help choosing.

What training formats are available in Spain?

We offer live virtual instructor-led training, classroom sessions and customised corporate onsite delivery, so you can pick the format that fits your schedule and location in Spain.

    How soon can I start?

Public sessions run on a regular schedule and corporate sessions are arranged to suit your team. See upcoming schedules or speak to a learning advisor for the next available dates.

    Can I reschedule my booking?

Yes. Flexible options let you reschedule or transfer to another session where needed. Contact support to arrange this before your scheduled date.

Can you deliver this onsite at our facility?
