What Is Value Stream Mapping?UntitledThe Lean Skill Behind Leaner Operations

Value Stream Mapping Training in Costa Rica is a practical, one-day Lean course that teaches you to picture the complete flow of materials and information behind a product or service, then redesign it to remove waste. Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is the core technique of the Toyota Production System, popularised by Mike Rother and John Shook in their 1998 guide Learning to See, and it remains the starting point for almost every Lean improvement programme. You learn by doing. Across the day you draw a current-state map from a real operational scenario, apply the five Lean principles and the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME), calculate takt time, and then design a future-state map and an implementation plan. The course suits operations and manufacturing managers, industrial engineers, supply chain professionals and continuous improvement practitioners. There is no exam and no formal credential; this is skills training you can apply the next day. On completing the programme you receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning. If you want to make waste visible and improve flow across your operation, start your Value Stream Mapping journey with Invensis Learning.

The Payoff of Learning to See Your Value StreamsPractical Gains for You and Your Team

    For Individuals

    For Individuals

Value Stream Mapping training helps you build a practical Lean skill you can use immediately. You learn to map how work really flows, find the waste that hides inside busy processes, and design a leaner future state your team can act on. Whether you work in a free-zone plant, a shared-services centre or a logistics operation, the technique gives you a structured way to diagnose and improve end-to-end flow.

If you want to move from firefighting to structured improvement, VSM is one of the highest-leverage skills you can learn. You leave able to facilitate a mapping session, quantify the gains, and plan the changes that deliver them.

    • See the whole flow of your process in a single, shared picture
    • Expose the eight wastes and the true bottleneck in any operation
    • Turn improvement ideas into data-backed current and future-state maps
    • Lead VSM workshops and Kaizen events with confidence
    • Build a skill valued by medtech, manufacturing and services employers
    • Apply takt time, flow and pull thinking to real work
    • Strengthen your standing for operations and improvement roles
    For Organizations

    For Organizations

Value Stream Mapping group training equips your teams to map, analyse and redesign the value streams that matter most to the business. Delivered onsite or live virtual, it builds a shared improvement language across operations, quality, engineering and supply chain. For organisations under cost and delivery pressure, VSM turns scattered improvement effort into a coordinated, strategy-aligned programme.

If your sites run busy but still leak time and inventory, team VSM training creates a common method for finding and fixing the waste. Cross-functional groups leave with a current-state map, a future-state design and an implementation roadmap for their own operation.

    • Give teams a shared language for diagnosing and improving flow
    • Cut lead time and inventory by removing non-value-adding steps
    • Scope Kaizen events from an agreed current-state map
    • Build in-house Lean facilitation capability across sites
    • Align operations, quality and engineering around one view
    • Standardise improvement practice across plants and shifts
    • Flexible onsite or live virtual delivery for your teams

What Is Driving Demand for Lean Mapping Skills in Costa Rica

Scaling Medtech Exports Without Losing Flow

Costa Rica's medical device exports reached almost USD 9 billion in 2024. Plants must map value streams to hold quality and compliance while ramping output at pace.

VSM builds current and future-state mapping skills

    Free-Zone Margin and Cost Discipline

Free-zone manufacturers under Law 7210 compete globally on cost. Value stream mapping exposes the non-value-adding steps and inventory that quietly erode margin.

    VSM builds waste-elimination skills

    Nearshoring and Supply Chain Resilience

As supply chains shift nearshore to Costa Rica, teams need to align material and information flow from supplier to customer, which is exactly what VSM makes visible.

    VSM builds end-to-end flow skills

    Leaner Shared-Services Operations

With 350+ services companies established, back-office teams apply VSM to claims, order and transaction processes to cut lead time and remove administrative waste.

    VSM builds process-flow analysis skills

Strong on Operations, Thin on Facilitation

Costa Rica's Intel-rooted talent base is deep in precision operations but short of people who can facilitate a structured value stream mapping session end to end.

VSM makes skilled mappers stand out

    Embedding a Continuous Improvement Culture

Global centres of excellence in Costa Rica expect daily improvement. VSM gives operations, quality and engineering one shared view to prioritise and sustain change.

VSM gives teams a shared diagnostic language

The Lean Mapping Skills You Will Walk Away WithFrom Current State to Future State

By the end of this Value Stream Mapping course you will be able to map, analyse and redesign any value stream. You leave able to draw a current-state map, identify waste, design a future state and plan the changes that make it real.

    Draw an Accurate Current-State Map

Select a product family, walk the value stream at the Gemba, and capture cycle time, changeover, uptime, batch size and inventory to build an honest baseline of how work flows today.

Read the Eight Wastes of Lean

Systematically review the map for the eight wastes (DOWNTIME), distinguish value-added from non-value-added activity, and find the true bottleneck that limits overall flow.

    Use the Standard VSM Symbols

Apply the standard value stream mapping symbol set: process boxes, material and information flow arrows, inventory triangles, kanban, data boxes and Kaizen bursts, so any team can read your map.

    Calculate Takt Time and Flow

Work out takt time, balance cycle times against customer demand, and analyse where material is pushed versus pulled, so you can see where overproduction and starvation are created.

    Design a Future-State Map

Use the eight future-state questions to design continuous flow, pull systems and supermarkets, level the mix, and quantify the improvement from current to future state.

    Build an Implementation Roadmap

Translate the future-state vision into a sequenced plan of Kaizen events and workstreams, set metrics and standard work, and sustain the gains as a continuous improvement discipline.

Gave Our Teams One Shared Language

"We trained a cross-functional group onsite and it changed how our teams talk about improvement. Operations, quality and engineering now share one map and one language, and our Kaizen events are far better scoped."

    Flexible Delivery with Real Outputs

"The corporate delivery was flexible and built around our shift patterns. Our supervisors left with a current-state map, a future-state design and a realistic roadmap for their own line, which made the investment easy to justify."

Value Stream Mapping training is a practical, one-day Lean course that teaches you to visualise the full flow of materials and information behind a product or service, identify waste, and design a leaner future state. It is hands-on skills training grounded in the Toyota Production System.

Yes. VSM is one of the most in-demand Lean skills across Costa Rica's medical device, precision manufacturing and shared-services sectors. It equips you to cut lead time and waste, which employers running free-zone plants and global operations value highly.

VSM is used to make an end-to-end process visible so a team can find waste, bottlenecks and improvement opportunities. It is applied in manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, services and IT to reduce lead time, cut inventory and improve flow.

The course suits operations and manufacturing managers, industrial and process engineers, supply chain professionals, Lean and Six Sigma practitioners, and anyone responsible for improving process flow. No prior Lean training is required to take part.

The course runs for one day (8 hours) and covers Lean foundations, VSM symbols, current-state mapping, waste analysis, future-state design and implementation planning, with hands-on mapping exercises throughout.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for this course?

No. Value Stream Mapping is a non-certification skills course with no exam. Learning is reinforced through hands-on mapping exercises and group discussion during the one-day programme.

Do I receive a certificate after the course?

You receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning. This is a skills training programme rather than a formal credential, so no external certification is awarded, but the record confirms your completion of the training.

How is learning assessed on the course?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you practise throughout the day by building both a current-state and a future-state map for a realistic scenario, with the trainer guiding and reviewing your work.

Will I be able to run a value stream map after the course?

Yes. By the end you can select a product family, walk the value stream, draw a current-state map, identify waste, design a future state and build an implementation roadmap for your own operation.

    Is this an accredited certification?

No. VSM is an established Lean technique with no governing body or accreditation. This course builds practical, immediately applicable skills grounded in the Toyota Production System and standard VSM practice.

    Course Content

What topics does the course cover?

The course covers Lean foundations, the standard VSM symbols, creating and analysing the current-state map, designing the future-state map, and implementation planning across six structured modules.

What will I learn to do in the course?

You will learn to map how work flows today, identify the eight wastes and the bottleneck, calculate takt time, design a leaner future state, and plan the Kaizen events that deliver it.

    Are there hands-on exercises?

Yes. You build both a current-state and a future-state map for a realistic operational scenario during the day, so you practise the full technique rather than only learning the theory.

Which framework is the course based on?

It is grounded in Value Stream Mapping as developed within the Toyota Production System and popularised by Mike Rother and John Shook in their 1998 guide Learning to See, including the five Lean principles and the eight wastes of Lean.

Do I need to know the VSM symbols beforehand?

No prior knowledge is needed. The course teaches the full standard VSM symbol set, from process boxes and data boxes to kanban and Kaizen bursts, so you can read and draw maps confidently.

Public sessions run on a regular schedule and corporate sessions are arranged around your team's availability. See upcoming schedules or contact a learning advisor to confirm the next available dates.

Can my team train together onsite?

Yes. Onsite corporate training lets a cross-functional team map a real value stream from your own operation together, which is one of the most effective ways to run the course. Ask about group pricing.
