Why Costa Rica's Manufacturers Need Mistake-Proofing

ISO 13485 and IATF Compliance Pressure

Costa Rica's medtech and automotive suppliers must meet strict ISO 13485 and IATF 16949 defect-prevention clauses, and auditors increasingly expect built-in mistake-proofing controls.

    Poka Yoke builds defect-prevention capability

The Rising Cost of Poor Quality

Rework, scrap and recalls carry steep costs in regulated manufacturing. Mistake-proofing stops defects at source, protecting both margins and customer trust.

Poka Yoke prevents defects at source

    Medtech Nearshoring and Rapid Scale-Up

New plants in the Coyol and Cartago free zones must reach zero-defect performance fast, driving demand for professionals who can design error-proof processes.

Poka Yoke speeds the path to zero defects

    A Shortage of Prevention-Focused Talent

Costa Rica has a deep pool of operators and inspectors but fewer people trained to design prevention controls, making mistake-proofing skills genuinely scarce.

Poka Yoke makes your skills stand out

    Human Error in Complex Assembly

High-mix medical device and electronics assembly is error-prone by nature. Structured mistake-proofing methods reduce reliance on inspection and operator vigilance.

    General

    What is Poka Yoke training?

Poka Yoke training is a practical, one-day skills course that teaches you to prevent errors before they become defects. Poka Yoke means mistake-proofing in Japanese and was developed by Shigeo Shingo within the Toyota Production System. You learn to identify error-prone steps and design controls that stop defects at source.

Who should attend Poka Yoke training in Costa Rica?

It suits quality engineers, manufacturing and process engineers, production supervisors, Lean and Six Sigma practitioners, and anyone responsible for defect prevention. It is especially relevant in Costa Rica's medical device, electronics, pharma and food manufacturing operations, and applies to healthcare, logistics and services too.

Is Poka Yoke training worth it for quality professionals?

Yes. Mistake-proofing is a highly transferable Lean and Six Sigma skill valued by Costa Rica's quality-driven manufacturers. It helps you cut rework and scrap, meet ISO 13485 and IATF 16949 expectations, and stand out for continuous improvement and quality roles that are hard to fill.

Do I need prior quality experience to attend?

No. There are no formal prerequisites and the course introduces every principle from first principles. Some familiarity with defects, rework and inspection is helpful but not required, so the training works for newcomers and experienced practitioners alike.

How long is the Poka Yoke course?

The course runs for one day (8 hours), covering mistake-proofing foundations, human error analysis, Poka Yoke classification, the design process, case studies and implementation planning, with hands-on exercises throughout. A half-day format across two sessions is also available.

    Pricing

How much does Poka Yoke training cost in Costa Rica?

Pricing depends on the delivery mode (live online, classroom or onsite corporate) and group size, so it is available on request. Contact a learning advisor for a quote tailored to individual or team training in Costa Rica.

What is included in the course fee?

The fee includes instructor-led training across all six modules, hands-on error-identification and design exercises, real-world case studies, course materials, and a course completion record. Onsite corporate delivery can also include tailored content for your processes. Request a quote for details.

Do you offer group or corporate discounts?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for quality, engineering and production teams. Onsite delivery is available across Costa Rica's free trade zones. Contact us for a group quote.

Are there payment or instalment options?

Yes. We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, with instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you.

Is there a separate exam or certification fee?

No. This is a non-certification skills course with no exam, so there is no exam or external credential fee. The training fee is all you pay, and you receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for Poka Yoke training?

No. This is a practical skills course with no exam. Your learning is reinforced through hands-on error-identification and mistake-proofing design exercises, case studies and group discussion during the day.

Do I receive a certificate after the course?

You receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning. No formal external credential is awarded, because Poka Yoke is a technique rather than a certification scheme, but the skills are immediately applicable in your workplace.

How is my learning assessed during the course?

Learning is assessed through practical exercises rather than a test. You identify error-prone steps, apply Shingo's error categories, and design and evaluate Poka Yoke controls for realistic scenarios, so you practise the full mistake-proofing cycle as you go.

Will this help with ISO 13485 or IATF 16949 audits?

Yes. Poka Yoke directly supports the defect-prevention and risk-based thinking that ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 expect. You learn to build mistake-proofing controls into standard work, control plans and internal audit checks.

How soon can I apply what I learn?

Immediately. The techniques are designed for practical use, so you can identify error-prone steps, design controls and run team-based mistake-proofing workshops from the very next day. No renewal or maintenance is required.

    Course Content

What topics does the Poka Yoke course cover?

The course covers six areas: mistake-proofing foundations and the cost of defects, human error and error types, Poka Yoke classification, the six-step design process, real-world case studies, and implementing mistake-proofing in your organisation, all with hands-on exercises.

What is the difference between prevention and detection Poka Yoke?

Prevention-type (control) Poka Yoke makes an error impossible or stops the process automatically, the strongest form of mistake-proofing. Detection-type (warning) Poka Yoke signals that an error has occurred so it can be corrected before it becomes a defect. The course teaches when to use each.

    Are real case studies included?

Yes. You study proven mistake-proofing examples from automotive and electronics assembly, medical device and healthcare settings, service operations and software, then draw out the patterns behind successful designs to apply in your own work.

Does Poka Yoke apply beyond manufacturing?

Yes. While it originated in manufacturing, mistake-proofing applies anywhere human error causes problems, including healthcare, logistics, financial services, food and beverage and IT. The course includes service and administrative examples such as form validation and safety checklists.

    What materials are provided?

You receive structured course materials covering all six modules, worked case-study examples, and error-identification and design exercises to work through during the day. Onsite corporate sessions can be tailored to your own processes and defect data.
