What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a 60-minute time limit. It is open book and taken online through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course, with no proctor required.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

The passing score is 74%, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. The exam tests knowledge and comprehension across the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives.

How many attempts do I get for the CSM exam?

Candidates typically have up to three attempts to pass the CSM exam within 90 days of completing the course. The exam is unlocked in your Scrum Alliance member portal once the course is complete.

Do I have to attend a course before taking the exam?

Yes. Attendance at an approved Scrum Alliance CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer is mandatory. The online exam cannot be accessed until you complete the course, and you have 90 days from completion to sit it.

What if I do not pass the exam on the first try?

You have up to three attempts within the 90-day window after the course, and because the exam is open book you can refer to your materials. Our trainers and practice questions are designed to help you pass on your first attempt.

Course Content

What topics does the CSM training cover?

The training covers six areas from the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives: Scrum theory and principles, the Scrum values, the Scrum team, the Scrum events, the Scrum artifacts and the Scrum Master role, all aligned to the 2020 Scrum Guide.

How long is the CSM course?

The CSM course is a 16-hour programme, delivered either as two full days or four half-days depending on the schedule. This exceeds the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hours requirement for CSM courses.

Is the courseware aligned to the latest Scrum Guide?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the November 2020 Scrum Guide, which introduced the Product Goal and the commitments for each artifact.

Are practice questions and materials included?

Yes. You receive Scrum Alliance-aligned course materials, industry case studies and practice questions mapped to the 50-question, open-book exam format, so you can revise with confidence before sitting the online exam.

Do I need Scrum experience before the course?

No prior Scrum experience is required. The CSM is a foundational course designed for people new to Scrum as well as those who want to formalise the agile knowledge they already have, so beginners are fully supported.
