What is the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification?

Is the CSM certification worth it in Edmonton?

How long is the CSM certification valid?

The CSM is valid for two years. To renew, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee within each two-year cycle. SEUs can be earned through courses, coaching, self-study and other learning activities.

Which Scrum standard is the CSM based on?

The CSM is aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition, by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland. The course also references the Agile Manifesto and its principles.

What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam is an online, open-book, multiple-choice test taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete the course. It has 50 questions and a 60-minute time limit, with no proctor required.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

The passing score is 74%. You must answer at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly to pass. The exam tests knowledge and comprehension of the Scrum framework and the Scrum Master role.

How many attempts do I get for the CSM exam?

Candidates typically have three attempts to pass the CSM exam within 90 days of completing the course. If you do not pass on the first attempt, you can review the material and try again within that window.

Do I need to attend a course to take the CSM exam?

Yes. Attendance at an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) is mandatory. The Scrum Alliance online exam cannot be accessed until you have completed an approved course.

When can I take the CSM exam after the course?

You can access the online exam through your Scrum Alliance member portal within 90 days of completing the course. The exam is open book and taken online, so you can sit it when you feel ready inside that window.

What topics does the CSM course cover?

The course covers the six Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objective areas: Scrum Theory and Principles, Scrum Values, the Scrum Team, Scrum Events, Scrum Artifacts, and the Scrum Master Role, along with servant leadership and facilitation techniques.

Which Scrum Guide edition is the course aligned to?

The course is aligned to the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition, which introduced the Product Goal and clarified the Sprint Goal and Definition of Done as commitments. It is taught alongside the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives.

Are practice questions and exercises included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions aligned to the 50-question, open-book exam format, plus industry case studies and exercises on Scrum facilitation, coaching and impediment removal to reinforce learning.

Is the CSM course suitable for beginners?
