Why Risk Skills Are in Demand Across Canberra

    Commonwealth Risk Governance Pressure

Federal entities must run to the Commonwealth Risk Management Policy, yet many programmes lack specialists who can embed structured risk practice, the exact gap PMI-RMP is built to close.

PMI-RMP builds structured risk strategy and planning skills

    Defence Capability Complexity

AUKUS and Defence Strategic Review programmes carry long timelines and high uncertainty, demanding rigorous risk identification, quantitative analysis and response planning at scale.

PMI-RMP builds risk analysis and response skills

    Cyber and Digital Assurance Demand

Canberra's cyber uplift and digital transformation projects raise threat exposure, so organisations need professionals who can quantify and treat risk, not simply log it.

    PMI-RMP builds risk quantification skills

    Contractor Assurance Tightening

Federal contractor reforms are lifting scrutiny of delivery and assurance, pushing agencies and primes to hire risk leaders who can prove disciplined, auditable controls.

PMI-RMP makes certified risk leaders stand out

    Risk Talent Scarcity

The ACT has a deep pool of project managers but few certified risk specialists, making PMI-RMP holders rare and highly valued by government and consulting employers.

PMI-RMP makes holders rare and sought-after

    Infrastructure Delivery Risk

Canberra Light Rail and major public works add schedule and cost uncertainty, so credentialed risk professionals are hired to protect budgets and strategic outcomes.

Risk Skills You Will BuildAcross the Five PMI-RMP Domains

PMI-RMP training in Canberra builds practical, exam-ready skills across all five risk domains. By the end you can plan, identify, analyse, respond to and monitor risk on predictive, agile and hybrid projects.

Build a Risk Strategy and Plan

Establish the risk approach, governance and thresholds for a project or programme, and tailor the risk management plan to predictive, agile or hybrid delivery. This is the Risk Strategy and Planning domain (20% of the exam).

    Identify Threats and Opportunities

Run structured identification using brainstorming, SWOT, the Delphi technique, checklists and assumption analysis, and document clear cause-risk-effect entries in the risk register to keep coverage complete.

    Analyse Risk Qualitatively and Quantitatively

Prioritise risks with probability and impact matrices, then apply Monte Carlo simulation, decision trees, sensitivity analysis and expected monetary value to model the effect on cost and schedule.

    Plan and Implement Risk Responses

Select response strategies for threats (avoid, transfer, mitigate, accept) and opportunities (exploit, share, enhance, accept), assign owners, and set contingency and fallback plans with clear triggers.

    Monitor, Report and Close Risks

Track triggers and residual risks, run periodic risk reviews, report exposure to stakeholders, and formally close risks with lessons learned at project close to strengthen future delivery.

Apply Risk Tools in Real Scenarios

Use tornado diagrams, heat maps, S-curves, reserve analysis and earned value to communicate risk clearly, mirroring the scenario-based style of the 115-question PMI-RMP exam.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

PMI-RMP is PMI's specialist credential in project risk management. It recognises expertise in identifying risks, mitigating threats and capitalising on opportunities, and suits risk specialists, senior project managers, PMO analysts and consultants across Canberra's government and defence sectors.

    General

What is the PMI-RMP certification and who is it for?

PMI-RMP is PMI's specialist credential in project risk management. It recognises expertise in identifying risks, mitigating threats and capitalising on opportunities, and suits risk specialists, senior project managers, PMO analysts and consultants across Canberra's government and defence sectors.

Is the PMI-RMP worth it for professionals in Canberra?

Yes. Canberra's federal, defence and consulting employers run large, assurance-heavy programmes and increasingly seek certified risk professionals. Risk Manager roles in the ACT average around A$127,500, and PMI-RMP helps you stand out for senior positions. Talk to a learning advisor to plan your path.

    Is PMP required before PMI-RMP?

No. PMP is not a prerequisite for PMI-RMP. You can apply directly based on your risk management experience and education, though many professionals hold both credentials because they complement each other.

Which standard is the PMI-RMP based on?

The exam follows PMI's PMI-RMP Examination Content Outline (ECO), effective January 2022, and draws on the PMI Practice Standard for Project Risk Management and the current PMBOK Guide. It covers predictive, agile and hybrid risk management.

How long is the PMI-RMP certification valid?

PMI-RMP is valid for three years. To maintain it, you earn 30 PDUs in risk management topics within each three-year continuing certification requirements (CCR) cycle.

    Exam

What is the format of the PMI-RMP exam?

The PMI-RMP exam is a closed-book, multiple-choice examination based on the PMI-RMP Examination Content Outline (January 2022). Questions use single-answer and multiple-answer formats across five risk management domains.

How many questions are on the PMI-RMP exam and how long is it?

The exam has 115 questions and a time limit of 2.5 hours (150 minutes). It is delivered online via Pearson VUE OnVUE proctoring or at a Pearson VUE test centre.

What are the PMI-RMP exam domains and their weights?

Five domains: Risk Strategy and Planning (20%), Risk Identification (20%), Risk Analysis (23%), Risk Response (22%), and Monitor and Close Risks (15%).

What is the passing score for the PMI-RMP exam?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score that is not published as a fixed number. Results are reported as pass or fail with domain-level feedback of Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement.

What if I do not pass the exam the first time?

You have up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility period. Reexamination fees apply to later attempts, and our practice questions and mock exams are designed to help you prepare thoroughly. Confirm current fees on pmi.org.

What are the eligibility requirements for PMI-RMP?

You must meet one of three sets: Set A (secondary diploma, 36 months risk experience in the last five years, 40 hours education); Set B (bachelor's degree, 24 months experience, 30 hours education); or Set C (GAC-accredited degree, 12 months experience, 30 hours education).

    Course Content

What topics are covered in the PMI-RMP training?

The training covers all five domains: risk strategy and planning, risk identification, risk analysis, risk response, and monitoring and closing risks, across predictive, agile and hybrid delivery, plus exam strategy.

Does the training satisfy the PMI-RMP education requirement?

Yes for most candidates. The 32 contact hours fully satisfy the 30-hour education requirement for Set B and Set C. Set A candidates need 40 hours and should add at least 8 hours of supplementary risk education.

    What learning resources are provided?

You receive PMI-aligned courseware, references to the PMI-RMP ECO and Handbook, risk analysis tools and templates, chapter-wise quizzes, and practice questions mapped to the exam.

Are there practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and full-length mock exams aligned to the 115-question format, plus quizzes to help you identify weak areas and build readiness.

Do I need prior experience to take the training?

Anyone can attend the training. To sit the exam, PMI requires documented project risk management experience and education under one of the three eligibility sets, which our trainers help you plan for.
