Construction Market Forces Fuelling PMI-CP Demand

    Contract and Claims Complexity

South African projects run on complex contracts where delay, disruption and variation claims escalate fast. Contracts Management is PMI-CP's largest domain at 50%, built to close exactly this gap.

PMI-CP builds contract administration and claims skills

    Infrastructure Delivery at Scale

With R500 billion in public infrastructure and 34 Strategic Integrated Projects in delivery, employers need PMs who can control scope, schedule and cost across large, multi-stakeholder programmes.

PMI-CP builds scope, schedule and governance skills

    Shortage of Certified Construction PMs

The exit of major contractors and steady demand have thinned senior construction PM capacity. PMI-CP's construction-specific standard makes credentialed holders rare and sought-after.

PMI-CP makes certified construction leaders stand out

    Renewable Energy Build-Out

The push for solar, wind, gas and grid capacity is opening a wave of energy construction projects that demand specialist contract, interface and risk management skill.

    PMI-CP builds construction delivery capability

    Governance and Public Accountability

State-owned and public projects face intense scrutiny on cost, delay and probity. Project Governance and Strategy and Scope Management equip PMs to deliver with clear oversight and reporting.

PMI-CP builds project governance and assurance skills

    Community and Stakeholder Pressure

Community disruption and site stoppages can derail delivery and social licence. Stakeholder Engagement, a 30% domain, prepares PMs to manage owners, communities and regulators throughout the project.

    Your South Africa Career Transformation

Your Construction Career Before and After PMI-CP

    The Certified Difference

South Africa's construction market is expanding on the back of major infrastructure and energy investment, and employers increasingly separate certified construction leaders from the rest. Here is which side of that line the PMI-CP puts you on.

    Today

Salary capped with limited leverage to negotiate in the South African market

    After PMI-CP

Senior construction PMs in South Africa earn around R1.08 million, with directors reaching far higher

    Today

Overlooked for roles that list construction PM credentials as preferred

    After PMI-CP

Eligible for senior roles across infrastructure, energy, building and mining construction

    Today

Confident on site, but employers want proof of contract and governance skill

    After PMI-CP

Fluent in contract administration, stakeholder engagement and project governance

    You earn your PMI-CP

    Before

Project authority rests on site experience, not a recognised construction credential

    Now you have

A globally recognised PMI credential built specifically for construction delivery

    Before

Competing for senior roles against equally experienced peers

    Now you have

A construction-specific certification that sets you apart on major projects

    Before

Strong on delivery, but contract and claims exposure is a weak spot

    Now you have

Command of contract administration, claims and change control, PMI-CP's largest domain

    Before

Recognition tied to your current employer or project

    Now you have

A credential that travels across sectors, employers and borders

"The gap between running a site and leading construction delivery is increasingly a recognised credential, and the employers that matter already know it."

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

PMI-CP is PMI's specialist certification for construction project management. It validates your ability to deliver complex construction projects across four exam domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%), and uniquely requires four mandatory prerequisite modules before you apply.

    General

What is the PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP) certification?

PMI-CP is PMI's specialist certification for construction project management. It validates your ability to deliver complex construction projects across four exam domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%), and uniquely requires four mandatory prerequisite modules before you apply.

Who should take PMI-CP certification in South Africa?

PMI-CP suits construction project managers, site and project engineers moving into project management, client-side and owner's representatives, programme managers and construction consultants. It is ideal for professionals delivering civil, building, energy or infrastructure projects who want a globally recognised, construction-specific PMI credential.

Is PMI-CP recognised in South Africa?

Yes. As a PMI credential, PMI-CP carries global recognition through PMI's network in over 200 countries and is valued by South African contractors, consultancies and public-sector clients. It is especially useful on major infrastructure and energy projects where clients seek internationally recognised project management credentials.

    Is PMP required before PMI-CP?

No. PMP is not a prerequisite for PMI-CP. You can apply based on your construction project management experience and education. The two credentials are complementary, with PMP covering general project management and PMI-CP validating construction-specific skill, so many professionals hold both.

What career benefits does PMI-CP offer?

PMI-CP positions you for senior roles such as construction project manager, senior PM, programme manager and project director. In South Africa, senior construction PMs earn around R1.08 million, and certified professionals stand out in a market short of construction project leaders.

    Pricing

How much does PMI-CP training cost in South Africa?

PMI-CP training fees vary by format and are available on request, so contact us for a quote tailored to individual or group learning. The PMI exam fee is billed separately by PMI in USD under regional pricing and is not part of the training fee. Request a quote to see the options that suit you.

What is included in the PMI-CP course fee?

The training fee typically includes PMI-aligned courseware, practice questions and mock exams, downloadable templates, guidance on the four prerequisite modules and the exam application, learner support, and a course completion certificate with contact hours.

Is the exam fee included in the training price?

No. PMI bills the PMI-CP exam fee separately in USD under regional pricing. PMI membership can reduce the exam fee and gives access to PMI resources. Confirm current exam and membership fees on pmi.org before you apply.

Do you offer corporate or group discounts for PMI-CP training?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for construction teams, PMOs and consultancies. Onsite, live virtual and hybrid delivery are available across South Africa. Ask about corporate or group pricing for a tailored quote.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, and offer instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that best fits your budget and schedule.

    Exam

What is the format of the PMI-CP exam?

The PMI-CP exam is a closed-book, multiple-choice examination based on the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline. It uses single-answer and multiple-answer questions across the four construction project management domains, delivered by Pearson VUE online proctoring or at a test centre.

How many questions are on the PMI-CP exam and how long is it?

The PMI-CP exam has 120 questions and an allotted time of 230 minutes (3 hours 50 minutes). It is closed book, so preparation should focus on applying construction project management concepts across realistic scenarios rather than pure recall.

What are the four PMI-CP exam domains and their weights?

The exam covers four domains per the ECO: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). Contracts Management is by far the largest, reflecting the central role of contracts and claims in construction delivery.

What is the passing score for the PMI-CP exam?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score that is not published as a fixed number. Results are reported as pass or fail with domain-level feedback (Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement), so aim for broad mastery across all four domains.

How many attempts do I get and where can I sit the exam?

You get up to three attempts within a one-year eligibility window from application approval. You can sit the exam via Pearson VUE OnVUE online proctoring from home or office, or at a Pearson VUE test centre.

What are the PMI-CP eligibility requirements?

Eligibility has two parts. First, complete all four mandatory self-paced prerequisite modules (56 PDUs total). Second, meet one experience set: high school diploma plus 60 months, a bachelor's degree plus 36 months, or a GAC-accredited degree plus 24 months of construction PM experience within the last 10 years, with 35 contact hours of PM education.

    Course Content

What topics does the PMI-CP training cover?

The training covers the four PMI-CP domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%), plus claims, risk, insurance and exam strategy. Content is aligned to construction industry practice and the PMBOK Guide.

What are the four mandatory PMI-CP prerequisite modules?

Before applying you must complete four self-paced modules in any order, each worth 14 PDUs: Project Communications, Interface Management, Scope and Change Order Management, and Contract and Risk Management. Together they award 56 PDUs that also count toward certification renewal. Our team guides you through completing them.

Does this training meet the 35 contact-hour requirement?

The instructor-led programme provides 32 contact hours of project management education, which is close to but below the 35 contact hours PMI requires across all eligibility sets. Confirm with us whether supplementary self-study or pre-reading is credited toward the 35-hour requirement before you apply.

Are practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and full-length mock exams mapped to the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline and the 120-question format, plus topic-wise quizzes to help you identify weak areas and build exam readiness.

Is the courseware aligned to the current PMI-CP ECO?

Yes. The courseware is mapped to the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline and its four domains, and to construction industry practice and the PMBOK Guide, so your preparation reflects what the exam actually assesses.

    Enrollment

How do I enrol in the PMI-CP course?

You can enrol through the Invensis Learning website. Choose your preferred format, complete payment, and you will receive access to schedules, courseware and learning resources. Talk to a learning advisor if you would like help choosing the right option.

    What training formats are available?

We offer live online (live virtual) instructor-led training, classroom training, and customised corporate group training, so you can choose the format that fits your schedule and site commitments across South Africa.

Do I need experience to enrol in the training?

Anyone can enrol in the training, and it is a strong way to earn project management education hours. To sit the PMI-CP exam, PMI requires the four prerequisite modules plus construction project management experience and education under one of its three eligibility sets.

Can I reschedule or transfer to another batch?

Yes. Flexi options let you reschedule or transfer to another batch, and selected plans allow you to attend the training twice. Contact our support team to arrange a change that works for you.

What is the refund or cancellation policy?

Refunds and cancellations are handled per our published policy, and selected plans include a money-back option. Reach out to our team for the details that apply to your enrolment before you book.
