Market Forces Driving Demand for Programme Leaders in South Africa

    Strategy-Execution Gap

Boards fund ambitious transformation and capex programmes, but weak links between strategy and the project mix cause value leakage that PgMP-certified leaders are hired to close.

    PgMP builds strategic alignment skills

    Infrastructure Delivery Under Pressure

Operation Vulindlela's R340bn network pipeline in energy, water, transport and telecoms needs programme-grade governance, risk aggregation and cross-project coordination at scale.

    PgMP builds programme governance skills

    Programme Talent Scarcity

South Africa's PM pool is deep in project managers but thin in certified programme managers. The PgMP's rigorous eligibility and panel review make holders rare and sought-after.

PgMP makes certified leaders stand out

    Digital Skills Shortfall

Only about one in ten organisations report advanced digital skills in-house, leaving banks and telecoms short of leaders who can govern large digital-transformation programmes.

    PgMP builds transformation leadership

    State-Owned Enterprise Turnarounds

Reform of power and logistics entities such as Eskom and Transnet demands programme leaders who can align complex, multi-project change to strategic benefits.

PgMP builds benefits and change skills

    Capital-Efficiency Pressure

Margin pressure across BFSI, mining and telecoms pushes organisations to optimise their programme mix, stopping low-value work and rebalancing investment to strategy.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

PgMP (Program Management Professional) is PMI's senior credential for professionals who manage multiple related projects as one coordinated programme to deliver strategic benefits. It is designed for senior programme managers, PMO leaders, delivery directors and transformation leaders with substantial programme experience.

    General

What is the PgMP certification and who is it for?

PgMP (Program Management Professional) is PMI's senior credential for professionals who manage multiple related projects as one coordinated programme to deliver strategic benefits. It is designed for senior programme managers, PMO leaders, delivery directors and transformation leaders with substantial programme experience.

Is the PgMP worth it for professionals in South Africa?

Yes. As banks, telecoms, mining houses and public-sector bodies scale large programmes under initiatives like Operation Vulindlela, certified programme leaders are in demand. Senior programme roles in South Africa average around R1.5m a year, and the PgMP helps you stand out in a market rich in project managers but short of certified programme managers.

Why choose Invensis Learning for PgMP training in South Africa?

Invensis Learning is a PMI Authorized Training Partner offering PMI-aligned courseware, experienced trainers, flexible delivery, and dedicated support for the PgMP application and panel review, helping you move from learning to certified with a clear path.

Do I need a PMP before taking the PgMP?

No. PMP is not a mandatory prerequisite. However, an active PMP satisfies the project management experience requirement across all three eligibility sets, so PMP holders only need to document their programme management experience.

How long is the PgMP certification valid?

The PgMP is valid for three years. To maintain it, you earn 60 PDUs across the PMI Talent Triangle, with a minimum of 8 PDUs in each area, within every three-year continuing certification requirements cycle.

    Pricing

How much does PgMP training cost in South Africa?

Training fees are quoted in South African rand and vary by format, whether live online, classroom or corporate group training. Request a quote for current pricing. The PMI exam fee is billed separately in USD under regional pricing.

What is included in the PgMP course fee?

The training fee typically includes PMI-aligned courseware, practice questions, mock exams, exam simulator access, downloadable templates, application and panel-review support, learner support, and a course completion certificate with contact hours. Talk to a learning advisor for a full inclusions list.

Is the PMI exam fee included in the training price?

No. PMI bills the PgMP exam fee separately in USD under regional pricing, around USD 800 for members and USD 1,000 for non-members, for reference only. PMI membership reduces the exam cost, so confirm current fees on pmi.org before applying.

Do you offer group or corporate discounts for PgMP training?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for PMOs, business units and leadership teams. Ask about corporate and group pricing for a tailored quote.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, and offer instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you.

    Exam

What is the format of the PgMP exam?

The PgMP exam is closed book with multiple-choice questions based on the PgMP Examination Content Outline and The Standard for Program Management, Fourth Edition. It covers five performance domains: Strategic Program Management, Program Life Cycle Management, Benefits Management, Stakeholder Engagement and Governance.

How many questions are on the PgMP exam and how long is it?

The exam has 170 questions and an allotted time of 4 hours. It is delivered online via Pearson VUE OnVUE proctoring or at a Pearson VUE test centre.

What is the PgMP panel review?

The panel review is a multi-rater assessment unique to the PgMP. A panel of programme management practitioners evaluates your documented experience. It is a mandatory step in addition to the written exam, and both must be passed to earn the credential.

What is the passing score for the PgMP exam?

PMI does not publish a fixed pass mark. The result is determined through psychometric analysis and reported with domain-level feedback of Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement, so aim for broad mastery across all five domains.

What happens if I do not pass the first time?

You get up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility period from application approval. Re-examination fees apply to the second and third attempts, and our prep support and mock exams are built to help you pass with confidence.

    Course Content

What topics are covered in the PgMP training?

The training covers the five PgMP performance domains: Strategic Program Management (11%), Program Life Cycle Management (44%), Benefits Management (11%), Stakeholder Engagement (16%) and Governance (18%), plus application and panel-review preparation and exam strategy.

Can I take this course if I am new to programme management?

The PgMP is a senior credential that expects substantial experience, but anyone can enrol in the training to build knowledge and earn contact hours. Our trainers support you with practical examples and guidance on documenting the experience PMI requires.

What learning resources and materials are provided?

You receive PMI-aligned courseware, references to the PgMP Examination Content Outline and Handbook, a Standard for Program Management overview, templates, flashcards and topic-wise quizzes to structure your preparation.

Are practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions, full-length mock exams, an exam simulator and topic-wise quizzes to help you identify weak areas and build readiness for the 170-question exam.

Is the courseware aligned with the latest PgMP standard?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current PgMP Examination Content Outline and The Standard for Program Management, 4th Edition, which forms the reference framework for the exam.

    Enrollment

What are the eligibility requirements for the PgMP exam?

PMI offers three sets. With a secondary diploma you need 4 years of project management experience or an active PMP plus 7 years of programme management experience. With a bachelor's degree the programme experience requirement drops to 4 years, all within the past 15 years, plus a panel review.

How do I enrol in the PgMP course?

You can enrol through the Invensis Learning website. Choose your preferred format, complete payment, and you will receive access to schedules, courseware and learning resources. Talk to an advisor if you would like help choosing a batch.

What training formats are available in South Africa?

We offer live online instructor-led training, classroom sessions, self-paced e-learning, and customised corporate group training, so you can choose the format that fits your schedule and location.

How soon can I start and take the exam?

You can enrol in an upcoming batch straight away. After training, submit your PMI application, clear the panel review, then schedule the exam via Pearson VUE within your one-year eligibility period. See upcoming schedules to plan your start.

Can I reschedule or transfer my enrolment?

Yes. Flexi options let you reschedule or transfer to another batch, and selected plans include a Flexi Pass to attend the training twice. Contact support to arrange this.
