What Is Value Stream Mapping?UntitledA Lean Lens on End-To-End Flow

Value Stream Mapping Training in Sweden is a practical, one-day programme that teaches you to map the full flow of materials and information behind any product or service. Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean technique for making end-to-end flow visible in a single view, so you can pinpoint waste, bottlenecks and improvement opportunities that stay hidden inside individual departments. The method is rooted in the Toyota Production System and was popularised for Lean practitioners by Mike Rother and John Shook in Learning to See (1998). Across the day you apply the five Lean principles, learn to spot the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME), and build both current-state and future-state maps using the standard VSM symbol set. The training suits operations managers, manufacturing and process engineers, quality leads, supply chain professionals and continuous improvement practitioners in Sweden's automotive, machinery, life sciences and logistics sectors. There is no exam; learning is reinforced through hands-on mapping exercises, and you leave with skills you can apply immediately. Start building your value stream mapping capability with Invensis Learning.

    For Organizations

    For Organizations

Group value stream mapping training helps organisations build in-house improvement capability by teaching cross-functional teams to map, analyse and redesign their own value streams. Sessions can be run for a plant, a business unit or an operations team. For Swedish employers under pressure to control cost and speed up delivery, VSM gives teams a common, data-based way to see waste and agree where to act first.

When a team maps a real value stream together, they leave with a shared diagnosis and an agreed improvement roadmap. That shared understanding is what makes lean change stick beyond a single workshop.

    • Builds a shared visual language for improvement across functions
    • Connects shop-floor and service processes to customer value
    • Exposes waste, excess inventory and bottlenecks with hard data
    • Gives teams a repeatable method to plan and sequence Kaizen work
    • Improves lead time, throughput and on-time delivery performance
    • Aligns operations, quality, engineering and logistics on one map
    • Scales through live virtual, onsite and customised group delivery
    • Turns improvement from a one-off event into an ongoing discipline

Market Forces Making Lean Flow Skills Essential in Sweden

    Electrification Overhaul of Vehicle Plants

As Swedish carmakers ramp electric models and megacasting, whole production flows are being rebuilt, and mapping is how teams design leaner lines rather than copy old ones.

VSM redesigns flow for new production lines

    Green Industrial Transition Ramp-Up

Fossil-free steel and battery projects must scale fast without building waste in. Value stream mapping gives new operations a clear baseline and improvement path from day one.

VSM controls waste during rapid ramp-up

    Shortage of Lean Improvement Talent

Sweden has a deep engineering base but few people who can map and redesign a value stream. That scarcity makes VSM-capable practitioners genuinely sought after.

VSM skills make practitioners stand out

    Relentless Cost and Capital Discipline

In a high-cost economy, margins depend on cutting non-value work. Mapping exposes excess inventory, waiting and rework so teams can act where the payoff is largest.

VSM targets waste and frees capacity

    Complex Global Supply Chains

Swedish exporters run long, multi-site value streams where delays hide between steps. VSM makes material and information flow visible so bottlenecks can be tackled.

VSM exposes bottlenecks across the chain

    Automation and Smart Industry Rollout

Automating a wasteful process only speeds up waste. Mapping the current state first ensures digital and automation investment is aimed at the right constraints.

VSM sets the baseline before automating

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

Value stream mapping (VSM) is a Lean technique for visualising the full flow of materials and information needed to bring a product or service to the customer. It makes waste, bottlenecks and improvement opportunities visible in a single, shared view, and is rooted in the Toyota Production System.

Value stream mapping (VSM) is a Lean technique for visualising the full flow of materials and information needed to bring a product or service to the customer. It makes waste, bottlenecks and improvement opportunities visible in a single, shared view, and is rooted in the Toyota Production System.

The training suits operations and manufacturing managers, process and industrial engineers, quality leads, supply chain professionals, Lean practitioners and continuous improvement specialists. It is relevant to anyone in Sweden responsible for identifying and removing waste in end-to-end process flows.

Yes. VSM is one of the most transferable lean skills, and Swedish employers across automotive, machinery, life sciences and logistics value people who can map and redesign flow. Continuous improvement roles in Sweden average around SEK 783,000 a year, and demand for the skill is growing.

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste and flow is helpful, but the course introduces all the relevant concepts as part of the day, so newcomers and experienced practitioners can both benefit.

The course is grounded in Lean and the Toyota Production System, and follows the value stream mapping approach popularised by Mike Rother and John Shook in Learning to See (1998). You apply the five Lean principles and learn to identify the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME).

    General

    What is value stream mapping?

Value stream mapping (VSM) is a Lean technique for visualising the full flow of materials and information needed to bring a product or service to the customer. It makes waste, bottlenecks and improvement opportunities visible in a single, shared view, and is rooted in the Toyota Production System.

Who should attend the value stream mapping training?

The training suits operations and manufacturing managers, process and industrial engineers, quality leads, supply chain professionals, Lean practitioners and continuous improvement specialists. It is relevant to anyone in Sweden responsible for identifying and removing waste in end-to-end process flows.

Is value stream mapping training worth it in Sweden?

Yes. VSM is one of the most transferable lean skills, and Swedish employers across automotive, machinery, life sciences and logistics value people who can map and redesign flow. Continuous improvement roles in Sweden average around SEK 783,000 a year, and demand for the skill is growing.

Do I need prior Lean experience to attend?

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste and flow is helpful, but the course introduces all the relevant concepts as part of the day, so newcomers and experienced practitioners can both benefit.

What framework is the training based on?

The course is grounded in Lean and the Toyota Production System, and follows the value stream mapping approach popularised by Mike Rother and John Shook in Learning to See (1998). You apply the five Lean principles and learn to identify the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME).

    Pricing

How much does value stream mapping training cost in Sweden?

Pricing depends on the delivery format, group size and whether the session is public or corporate. For the current fee for your preferred format in Sweden, request a quote and a learning advisor will share the details.

What is included in the course fee?

The fee covers instructor-led training across all VSM modules, hands-on current-state and future-state mapping exercises, reusable templates and learning resources, and a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning. Ask us for the full inclusions for your chosen format.

Do you offer corporate or group pricing?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for plants, business units and operations teams. Group delivery is especially effective because your team can map a real value stream together. Contact us for a tailored quote.

Are there payment or instalment options?

We accept major payment methods and can discuss options for individual and corporate bookings. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the arrangement that suits you.

Is the price different for live virtual and classroom training?

Pricing can vary by delivery format and location, since classroom and onsite sessions carry different costs to live virtual delivery. Request a quote for your preferred format and we will confirm the exact price.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for the value stream mapping training?

No. This is a non-certification skills course with no exam. Learning is reinforced through hands-on mapping exercises and group discussion during the programme, so you build practical capability you can apply straight away at work.

Will I receive a certificate after the training?

Yes. On completing the programme you receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning. It recognises that you have completed the training and built practical value stream mapping skills.

How is my learning reinforced during the course?

Rather than a formal test, you practise throughout the day by building both current-state and future-state maps for realistic operational scenarios. The exercises and trainer feedback help you apply the method with confidence.

Is value stream mapping an accredited qualification?

Value stream mapping is a Lean technique rather than an accredited qualification, so there is no governing body or credential attached to it. The course builds practical, immediately usable skills and provides a completion certificate from Invensis Learning.

What will I be able to do after completing the training?

You will be able to select a value stream to map, run a Gemba walk, draw a current-state map with standard symbols, identify waste and the bottleneck, design a future-state map, and build a Kaizen implementation plan to achieve it.

    Course Content

What topics does the value stream mapping training cover?

The programme covers Lean foundations, the standard VSM symbol set, creating and analysing the current-state map, designing the future-state map, and implementation planning. You learn takt time, cycle time, lead time, the eight wastes and Kaizen planning.

Will I practise creating value stream maps?

Yes. The course is hands-on throughout. You build both a current-state and a future-state map for a realistic scenario, so you leave having actually applied the method rather than only seen it explained.

What VSM symbols and tools will I learn?

You learn the standard VSM symbols for process boxes, material and information flow, inventory triangles, kanban, data boxes and Kaizen bursts, plus how to complete the timeline and calculate the value-added ratio for a value stream.

How long is the value stream mapping training?

The training runs as a one-day, eight-hour programme covering all VSM modules, from Lean foundations and symbols through to current-state mapping, analysis, future-state design and implementation planning, with mapping exercises throughout.

Is the training relevant beyond manufacturing?

Yes. While VSM began on the shop floor, the same method applies to healthcare pathways, logistics, financial services and IT delivery. Any process with an end-to-end flow of work and information can be mapped and improved with it.

You can enrol through the Invensis Learning website. Choose your preferred format, complete your booking, and you will receive access to the schedule, joining details and learning resources. Talk to a learning advisor if you need help choosing a format.

    What training formats are available?
