Is the CSM certification worth it in Portugal?

Who should take the CSM course?

The CSM suits aspiring Scrum Masters, project managers moving to agile, and developers, testers or business analysts already working in Scrum teams. There is no formal experience requirement, so it is ideal for those new to Scrum or formalising existing knowledge.

Do I need to attend a course to get CSM certified?

Yes. Scrum Alliance requires you to attend an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) before you can access the exam. Self-study alone does not qualify for the CSM credential.

How long is the CSM certification valid?

CSM is valid for two years. To renew, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee within each two-year cycle.

What is the next step after CSM?

The Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) is the next level in the Scrum Alliance Scrum Master track. CSM is the mandatory prerequisite, and A-CSM also requires at least 12 months in a Scrum Master role after earning your CSM.

For CSM, the online exam fee is usually included in the course fee paid to the training provider, as the exam is unlocked only after you complete an approved course. Confirm this when you book your place.

What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam is an open-book, online, multiple-choice test taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. No proctor is required.

How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 60 minutes. You take it online within 90 days of completing your course.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

You need 74% to pass, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly.

What if I do not pass the CSM exam the first time?

Candidates typically have up to three attempts to pass within the 90-day window after course completion, and the exam is open book. Our training and practice questions are designed to help you pass on the first attempt.

Which standard is the CSM exam based on?

The exam is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and aligned to the current Scrum Guide (Schwaber and Sutherland, November 2020 edition).

What topics does the CSM course cover?

The course covers the six CSM areas: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum team, Scrum events, Scrum artifacts, and the Scrum Master role, all aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives.

Do I need prior experience to take the CSM course?

No. There is no formal education or experience requirement. The course suits beginners and experienced practitioners alike, and the trainer builds concepts from first principles.

How long is the CSM training?

The instructor-led CSM programme runs for 16 hours, delivered as two full days or four half-days, exceeding the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hour requirement.

What learning resources are provided?

You receive Scrum Alliance aligned courseware, real-world case studies, practice questions mapped to the exam format, and trainer guidance throughout the programme.

Is the courseware aligned to the latest Scrum Guide?

Yes. The courseware follows the current Scrum Guide (November 2020 edition) and the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives, including the Product Goal and the commitments for each artifact.
