What Is Driving Scrum Demand in Porto

    Agile Adoption Outpacing Skilled Facilitators

Porto's fintech and product teams have adopted Scrum faster than they can staff it, leaving many squads without a trained Scrum Master to protect the sprint and remove impediments.

The CSM builds Scrum facilitation skills

    Scaling Delivery Across Growing Hubs

As global firms scale Porto delivery centres from dozens to hundreds of engineers, teams need consistent Scrum practice, the exact discipline a CSM-trained facilitator brings.

The CSM standardises how teams work

Ceremonies Without the Values Behind Them

Many organisations run Scrum events without the empiricism and values that make them work. Certified Scrum Masters close the gap between going through the motions and real agility.

The CSM teaches Scrum theory and values

    Competition for Agile Talent

Porto employers compete for agile talent with Lisbon and remote-first companies, so a recognised Scrum credential helps professionals stand out and helps teams retain capability.

The CSM helps professionals stand out

    Distributed and Hybrid Team Coordination

Nearshore and hybrid setups make facilitation harder. Scrum Masters trained in transparency and adaptive facilitation keep distributed teams aligned and focused on the Sprint Goal.

The CSM builds remote facilitation skills

    Delivering Under Fintech Compliance Pressure

Porto's banking and fintech centres deliver under tight audit and compliance pressure, where disciplined Scrum transparency and inspection reduce delivery risk.

    The CSM strengthens delivery discipline

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

It validates your understanding of the Scrum framework, the Scrum Master role, and the values and practices that make Scrum teams effective. It is the most widely recognised Scrum Master certification worldwide.

    General

What is the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification?

The Certified ScrumMaster, or CSM, is Scrum Alliance's entry-level Scrum Master credential. It validates your understanding of the Scrum framework, the Scrum Master role, and the values and practices that make Scrum teams effective. It is the most widely recognised Scrum Master certification worldwide.

Is the CSM worth it for professionals in Porto?

Yes. Porto is Portugal's second technology hub, with fintech, product-engineering and retail-tech employers running agile delivery at scale. Scrum Masters in Portugal average around 45,000 euros, and the CSM is a recognised way to prove Scrum capability to these employers.

Do I need to attend a course to earn the CSM?

Yes. Attendance at an approved Scrum Alliance CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) is mandatory. The online CSM exam cannot be accessed until you complete an approved course, which is why the training and exam go together.

How long is the CSM valid and how do I renew it?

The CSM is valid for two years. To renew it, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee every two years. SEUs can be earned through courses, conferences, coaching, teaching and self-study.

Who should take the CSM certification?

The CSM suits aspiring Scrum Masters, developers, testers, business analysts and team leads working in or moving into Scrum teams. It is also valuable for project managers transitioning from traditional delivery into agile who want to understand the Scrum Master role.

How many attempts do I get for the CSM exam?

Candidates typically have three attempts to pass the CSM exam within 90 days of completing an approved course. If you do not pass on the first try, the course preparation and your open-book materials support you across the remaining attempts.

Is the CSM exam open book?

Yes. The CSM exam is open book, so you can refer to your materials during the online exam. It tests knowledge and comprehension of the Scrum framework rather than memorisation.

When and how do I take the CSM exam?

You access the exam through your Scrum Alliance member portal within 90 days of completing the course. It is taken online without a proctor, so you can sit it from home or the office once you feel ready.

    Course Content

What topics does the CSM course cover?

The course covers the full Scrum framework: Scrum theory and empiricism, the five Scrum values, the Scrum Team and its accountabilities, all five Scrum events, the three artifacts and their commitments, and the Scrum Master role as a servant leader.

Which Scrum Guide edition is the course based on?

The course is aligned to the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, along with the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives. This edition introduced the Product Goal and framed the Sprint Goal and Definition of Done as commitments.

Do I need prior experience to take the CSM course?

No prior experience is required. The CSM is entry level, with no formal education or work-experience prerequisite. It suits those new to Scrum as well as team members who want to formalise existing knowledge.

    What learning materials are provided?

You receive Scrum Alliance CSM aligned courseware, industry-driven case studies, practice questions and reference materials mapped to the CSM Learning Objectives. These help you prepare for the open-book online exam and apply Scrum at work.

Is the courseware aligned to Scrum Alliance?

Yes. The course is delivered by a Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Trainer using Scrum Alliance CSM aligned materials and the current CSM Learning Objectives, so your preparation matches exactly what the credential validates.
