What Is Value Stream Mapping and Why It MattersUntitledA Practical Lean Skill for Maltese Teams

Value Stream Mapping Training in Malta is a one-day, instructor-led course that teaches Value Stream Mapping (VSM), the Lean technique for visualising how materials and information flow from concept to customer so you can see exactly where waste and delay creep in. You leave able to draw a current-state map, spot the eight wastes, and design a leaner future state your team can act on. VSM is rooted in the Toyota Production System and was set out for practitioners by Mike Rother and John Shook in their classic guide Learning to See (1998). It remains the starting point for almost every Lean improvement programme, from a factory line to a hospital pathway or a back-office process. This training grounds you in that same proven method, taught with worked examples and hands-on mapping throughout the day. The course suits operations and manufacturing managers, process and industrial engineers, Lean and Six Sigma practitioners, and supply chain professionals across Malta who want a practical, immediately usable skill rather than theory. With manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, aviation servicing and logistics all central to the Maltese economy, the ability to map and streamline value streams is a skill employers here genuinely reward. Start building it with Invensis Learning.

Group training gives your teams a common, practical method for finding and removing waste. When operations, quality, engineering and logistics map the same value stream together, they build a shared diagnosis and align on what to fix first. Delivered for a team or a whole site, the training is most effective when participants map a real value stream from your own organisation during the session, so the day produces improvements you can implement, not just concepts.

If your operation is under pressure to shorten lead times, free up capacity and cut cost without adding headcount, value stream mapping gives your people the tool to do it. Invensis Learning tailors the delivery to your sector and processes so the learning lands where it counts.

What Is Driving Demand for Lean Skills in Malta

Pressure to Do More with the Same

Malta's tight labour market means operations must lift output without adding headcount. Value stream mapping shows teams where effort is wasted and where capacity is hiding.

    VSM builds practical waste-elimination skills

    Complex, High-Value Manufacturing

As Malta shifts toward pharmaceuticals, microelectronics and precision components, tighter, more reliable process flow matters. VSM gives teams a method to design it.

VSM builds flow and lead-time skills

    Aviation Servicing at Scale

The maintenance and servicing cluster around Safi and Luqa runs on turnaround time. Mapping the value stream exposes the delays and bottlenecks that slow it down.

VSM builds bottleneck and cycle-time skills

    Rising Cost and Efficiency Demands

With input and energy costs squeezing margins, Maltese operations need to cut excess inventory and rework. VSM makes those costs visible and prioritises the fixes.

VSM builds cost and inventory optimisation skills

A Lean Skills Gap on the Ground

Job adverts increasingly ask for Lean, 5S and Kaizen, yet few professionals can facilitate a full value stream map. That capability is what sets candidates apart.

    VSM makes practitioners stand out

    Digital Change Without a Baseline

Teams adopt ERP and digital tools without first understanding their real process. VSM captures the honest current state so improvement and automation target the right work.

Skills You Will Build in This TrainingFrom Mapping to Measurable Improvement

This training turns Lean concepts into applied capability across the full value stream mapping cycle, from current-state mapping and waste analysis to future-state design and implementation planning. By the end of the day, you can map, analyse and improve a real process.

Read and Map a Value Stream

Skills covered in this training start with the core one: walk a process, run a Gemba data-gathering exercise, and draw an accurate current-state map from customer back to supplier that shows how the value stream really works today.

    Apply the Standard VSM Symbols

Use the standard VSM notation with confidence, from process boxes, push and pull arrows and inventory triangles to data boxes, information-flow arrows and the Kaizen burst, so your maps are clear and consistent for any team to read.

    Expose the Eight Wastes

Separate value-adding from non-value-adding activity and systematically identify the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME) across every step, turning a shared map into an honest diagnosis of where time, effort and money are lost.

Find the Bottleneck and Takt Time

Analyse the map to locate the true constraint, calculate takt time against customer demand, compare push and pull flow, and prioritise the improvement opportunities that will actually lift output and shorten lead time.

    Design a Leaner Future State

Apply the future-state design questions to build a target map: introduce continuous flow, pull systems and levelled scheduling, then quantify the lead-time, inventory and cycle-time gains as a compelling case for change.

    Build an Implementation Roadmap

Translate the future-state map into a time-based plan: scope Kaizen events, assign ownership, set baseline metrics, and standardise new ways of working so the improvements you design actually stick over time.

"The hands-on mapping made all the difference. I walked our packing line the next week, drew the current-state map, and immediately saw two bottlenecks we had been arguing about for months. Genuinely practical training."

Finally Understood Takt Time and Flow

"Clear, well paced and focused on doing rather than listening. Learning to separate value-adding from non-value-adding steps and calculate takt time changed how I look at our whole production flow."

Our Team Left with a Shared Plan

"We ran this onsite for a cross-functional team and mapped one of our real value streams during the day. Operations, quality and logistics finally had a shared picture and left with an agreed list of what to fix first."

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean technique for visualising how materials and information flow to deliver a product or service, so you can see and remove waste. This one-day training is designed for operations and manufacturing managers, process and industrial engineers, Lean and Six Sigma practitioners, and supply chain professionals in Malta.

Yes. Malta's manufacturing, pharmaceutical, aviation servicing and logistics sectors are under pressure to run leaner, and job adverts increasingly ask for Lean, 5S and Kaizen skills. VSM is a practical, immediately usable capability that helps you cut waste and lead improvement, which employers here value.

No. There are no formal prerequisites and the course is open to all. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste and flow is helpful, but the training introduces every concept you need in the context of mapping, so beginners and experienced practitioners both benefit.

The training is grounded in Lean management and the Toyota Production System, using the value stream mapping method set out by Mike Rother and John Shook in their guide Learning to See (1998). It remains the foundation of value stream mapping practice worldwide.

Lean Six Sigma courses cover a broad toolkit across a longer programme. This training goes deep on one high-impact tool, value stream mapping, in a single focused day. It is a strong standalone skill and an ideal complement to Yellow Belt, Green Belt or Kaizen learning.

    General

What is Value Stream Mapping and who is the training for?

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean technique for visualising how materials and information flow to deliver a product or service, so you can see and remove waste. This one-day training is designed for operations and manufacturing managers, process and industrial engineers, Lean and Six Sigma practitioners, and supply chain professionals in Malta.

Is value stream mapping worth learning in Malta?

Do I need prior Lean experience to attend?

No. There are no formal prerequisites and the course is open to all. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste and flow is helpful, but the training introduces every concept you need in the context of mapping, so beginners and experienced practitioners both benefit.

Which Lean approach does this training draw on?

The training is grounded in Lean management and the Toyota Production System, using the value stream mapping method set out by Mike Rother and John Shook in their guide Learning to See (1998). It remains the foundation of value stream mapping practice worldwide.

How is this different from a full Lean Six Sigma course?

Lean Six Sigma courses cover a broad toolkit across a longer programme. This training goes deep on one high-impact tool, value stream mapping, in a single focused day. It is a strong standalone skill and an ideal complement to Yellow Belt, Green Belt or Kaizen learning.

    Pricing

How much does the training cost in Malta?

Pricing depends on the delivery format, whether you enrol as an individual or a group, and the schedule, so fees are available on request. Contact a learning advisor for current pricing and to ask about group rates for your team.

What is included in the course fee?

Your enrolment includes the full one-day instructor-led programme, hands-on mapping exercises, course materials and reference resources, learner support, and a course completion record from Invensis Learning. Request a quote for a full breakdown.

Do you offer corporate or group pricing?

Yes. We offer tailored corporate and group training with schedules built around your team's availability and pricing based on group size. Group sessions can map a real value stream from your organisation. Ask about corporate pricing for your team.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, with instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that best suits you or your organisation.

Is a completion record included in the price?

Yes. On finishing the one-day programme you receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning at no extra cost. This is a record of training completed, not a formal certification or credential, as value stream mapping has no awarding body.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for this training?

No. This is a practical, non-certification skills course with no examination. Learning is reinforced through hands-on mapping exercises and group discussion throughout the day rather than a formal test.

Will I receive a certificate after the training?

You receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning. Value stream mapping has no external awarding body, so this is not a formal certification, but it confirms you have completed the training and built the practical skills it covers.

How is learning checked during the course?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you practise the skill directly by creating both a current-state and a future-state map for a realistic scenario, with the trainer guiding and giving feedback as you work through each stage.

What will I be able to do after completing the training?

You will be able to select a product family to map, run a Gemba walk to gather data, draw a current-state map with standard VSM symbols, identify waste and the bottleneck, design a future-state map, and build an implementation and Kaizen plan to reach it.

    How long is the training?

The programme runs for one day, totalling around 8 hours. It covers all six modules, from Lean foundations and VSM symbols through current-state mapping, analysis, future-state design and implementation planning, with hands-on exercises throughout.

    Course Content

What topics does the training cover?

The course covers six modules: Lean foundations and VSM, standard VSM symbols and notation, creating the current-state map, analysing the current state, designing the future-state map, and implementation planning to sustain improvement.

What are the eight wastes covered in the course?

You learn to spot the eight wastes of Lean, remembered as DOWNTIME: Defects, Overproduction, Waiting, Non-utilised talent, Transportation, Inventory, Motion and Extra processing. The map makes each of these visible across your process.

Will I practise creating real value stream maps?

Yes. Hands-on mapping runs through the whole day. You create both a current-state and a future-state map for a realistic operational scenario, so you leave having actually applied the method rather than only seen it explained.

What VSM tools and symbols will I learn?

You learn the standard VSM symbol set: process and data boxes, push and pull arrows, inventory triangles, kanban and supermarket symbols, information-flow arrows, the timeline, and the Kaizen burst used to mark improvement opportunities.

Is the training useful for service and office processes too?

Yes. While VSM began in manufacturing, the method applies just as well to healthcare pathways, logistics, financial and back-office processes, and IT and software delivery. The training shows how to map value streams in any of these environments.

    Enrollment

How do I enrol in the training in Malta?

You can enrol through the Invensis Learning website. Choose your preferred format and schedule, complete your booking, and you will receive access to your session details, course materials and learning resources. Contact a learning advisor if you need help choosing.

    What delivery formats are available?

The training is available as online (live virtual) instructor-led sessions, in-person classroom training, and onsite corporate delivery for teams in Malta. Choose the format that best fits your schedule and how you prefer to learn.

Can my team train together onsite in Malta?

Yes. We deliver onsite and live virtual group training for teams, scheduled around your operational availability. Onsite sessions are especially effective because your team can map a real value stream from your own site during the day. Ask about corporate training.

    Can I reschedule my booking?

Yes. Flexible options let you reschedule or move to another session where available. Contact our support team as early as you can and we will help you arrange a suitable alternative date.

    Who should attend the training?

It suits operations and manufacturing managers, process and industrial engineers, Lean and Six Sigma practitioners, supply chain and logistics professionals, and anyone in Malta responsible for identifying and removing waste in end-to-end process flows.
