What Is QFD and Why It MattersUntitledA Customer-Driven Path to Better Design

Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a structured, customer-driven planning method that translates the Voice of the Customer into specific engineering and design characteristics at every stage of product or service development. This Quality Function Deployment training in Malta teaches you to build and read the House of Quality, the visual matrix at the heart of QFD. Developed in Japan by Yoji Akao and Shigeru Mizuno, QFD is used across manufacturing, medical devices, electronics, aerospace and service design, all sectors that anchor Malta's high-end industrial base. Over one focused day you learn to capture customer requirements, prioritise them with the Kano model, and cascade them through product planning, parts deployment, process planning and production planning. The programme suits product designers, quality and process engineers, product managers and Six Sigma practitioners who want customer needs to drive every design decision. No prior QFD knowledge is needed, and the skills apply the moment you return to work. Start building customer-driven design capability with Invensis Learning.

What You Gain from QFD TrainingValue for Professionals and Teams

    For Individuals

    For Individuals

This QFD training helps product designers, engineers and quality professionals translate customer needs into design and process decisions. You leave able to run a Voice of the Customer workshop and build a House of Quality for a real product or service. Whether you work in medical devices, electronics, pharmaceuticals or service design, the method gives you a repeatable way to make customer requirements visible and traceable through development.

If you want your designs to reflect what customers actually need rather than what the team assumes, QFD is the tool that closes that gap. You gain a structured method that connects marketing, engineering and manufacturing around one shared plan.

    • Turn vague customer feedback into measurable engineering targets you can design to
    • Build and interpret a complete House of Quality with confidence
    • Prioritise design effort using the Kano model and importance weighting
    • Spot design conflicts early with the correlation roof, before costly prototyping
    • Cut rework and late design changes by getting requirements right the first time
    • Apply QFD within Design for Six Sigma and DMAIC projects
    • Strengthen your profile for design, quality and product roles across Malta's manufacturers
    • Carry a practical, transferable skill that does not expire
    For Organizations

    For Organizations

QFD group training equips cross-functional product development teams to translate the Voice of the Customer into design specifications together. The most powerful QFD work happens when designers, engineers, quality, marketing and manufacturing build the House of Quality as one team. For organisations in Malta's manufacturing, medical device and electronics sectors, this creates a common language for customer-driven design.

If your teams struggle to carry customer requirements cleanly from marketing into engineering and production, QFD gives them a structured, shared method. Corporate sessions let your team build a House of Quality for one of your own products during the training.

    • Aligns product, quality and manufacturing teams around a shared customer-driven plan
    • Reduces design iterations, warranty costs and time to market
    • Builds a documented audit trail from customer requirement to production control
    • Strengthens ISO 9001 customer-focus and design-control practice
    • Improves cross-functional decision-making on new product development
    • Delivered onsite or live virtual for whole product teams in Malta
    • Tailored to your own products with real House of Quality exercises
    • Standardises how requirements are captured across business units

Why QFD Skills Are in Demand Across Malta

From Customer Voice to Design Gap

Many Maltese manufacturers capture customer feedback but lose it in the handoff to engineering. QFD closes that gap, translating requirements into measurable design targets.

    QFD closes the requirement-to-design gap

    Regulation-Ready Design Control

Medical device, pharmaceutical and aerospace employers must show design control under ISO 9001, MDR and GMP. QFD provides a documented, traceable link from customer need to specification.

    QFD builds traceable design-control skills

    Costly Late Design Changes

Design iterations and warranty costs rise when products miss real customer needs. QFD front-loads decisions with the House of Quality, cutting rework and time to market.

    QFD front-loads design decisions

    Scarce Customer-Driven Design Talent

Malta faces persistent engineering skills shortages. Professionals who can run Voice of the Customer analysis and build a House of Quality are rare and sought-after.

QFD makes your skills stand out

    Semiconductor and Electronics Complexity

High-mix electronics plants must balance many competing design characteristics. The QFD correlation roof surfaces trade-offs before they reach expensive prototypes.

    QFD surfaces design trade-offs early

    Design for Six Sigma Adoption

As product teams adopt DFSS and DMAIC, QFD is the core tool that translates the Voice of the Customer into CTQs, keeping improvement work anchored to what customers value.

    Your Malta Career Transformation

Your QFD Capability, Before and After

    A Practical Transformation

Malta's manufacturers increasingly compete on customer-driven, regulation-ready design, and employers can tell the difference between teams that guess at requirements and teams that translate them systematically. Here is the shift QFD training makes.

    Today

You rely on intuition to decide what matters most in a design

    After QFD

You prioritise with the Kano model and importance weighting

    Today

Recognised for delivery, not for customer-driven design capability

    After QFD

Able to lead VOC workshops and build a House of Quality for real products

    Today

Improvement work risks fixing what customers do not value

    After QFD

QFD keeps DFSS and DMAIC work anchored to genuine customer needs

You Master the House of Quality

    Before

Customer feedback captured but lost on the way to engineering

    Now you have

A structured method to translate the Voice of the Customer into design specs

    Before

Design decisions driven by assumption and internal opinion

    Now you have

Decisions anchored to weighted, prioritised customer requirements

    Before

Design conflicts surface late, in prototyping or production

    Now you have

Trade-offs made visible early with the correlation roof

    Before

Requirements handled differently by each function

    Now you have

One shared House of Quality that aligns the whole team

"The distance between designing what the team assumes and designing what customers actually need is a single, learnable method, and the House of Quality is where it lives."

    Assessment

Is there an exam for the QFD course?

No. QFD training is a non-certification course with no examination. Learning is reinforced through hands-on House of Quality construction exercises, case studies and team discussion during the programme.

What will I receive after completing the training?

You receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning. No external credential is awarded, as this is a practical skills course rather than a certification.

    How is my learning assessed?

There is no formal assessment. You practise by building and interpreting a House of Quality on realistic product or service scenarios, so you leave able to apply QFD immediately at work.

Will the skills expire or need renewal?

No. QFD skills do not expire and require no renewal. The method is immediately applicable to product development, service design and improvement projects.

Can I apply QFD straight after the course?

Yes. You will be able to run a Voice of the Customer analysis, build a House of Quality, and cascade requirements into design and process decisions from your very next project.

    Course Content

What topics does the QFD training cover?

The programme covers QFD foundations, Voice of the Customer capture, the Kano model, full House of Quality construction (six rooms), reading the correlation roof, four-phase QFD cascading, and QFD in DFSS, DMAIC and service design.

What is the House of Quality?

The House of Quality is the central QFD planning matrix that links customer requirements (WHATs) to engineering characteristics (HOWs), captures relationships, benchmarks competitors and sets measurable design targets. You build one during the course.

How long is the QFD training?

The course is delivered as a focused one-day (8-hour) programme, also available as two half-days. It covers the full QFD methodology with hands-on House of Quality exercises throughout.

Does the course cover QFD for services and software?

Yes. Alongside manufacturing, the training shows how QFD applies to service design, healthcare, financial services and software, where customer requirements must still be translated into delivery specifications.

Are practical exercises and materials included?

Yes. You build a House of Quality from a realistic scenario and receive downloadable QFD templates, worked examples and reference materials to use after the training.
