    What is the format of the CSM exam?

    The CSM exam is an online, open-book, multiple-choice examination taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete the course. It has 50 single-answer questions and is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the 2020 Scrum Guide.

    How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

    The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 60 minutes (one hour). It is open book, so you can refer to materials, and it is taken online without a proctor.

    What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

    The passing score is 74%, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. Aim for broad mastery across Scrum theory, the Scrum values, the Scrum Team, events, artifacts and the Scrum Master role.

    What if I do not pass the CSM exam the first time?

    You have up to three attempts to pass the exam within 90 days of completing the course, so a first-time miss is easy to recover from. Our trainers and practice resources help you prepare thoroughly before you sit it.

    Which standard is the CSM exam based on?

    The exam is based on the current Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives, aligned to the November 2020 Scrum Guide by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland. The 2020 edition introduced the Product Goal and framed the Sprint Goal and Definition of Done as commitments.

    How long is the CSM course?

    The CSM course is a 16-hour programme, typically delivered as two full days or four half-days, meeting Scrum Alliance's minimum contact-hours requirement. It is led by a Certified Scrum Trainer and includes discussion, exercises and case-based practice.

    What learning materials are provided?

    You receive Scrum Alliance-aligned courseware, practical case studies, and practice questions mapped to the CSM exam format. Passing the exam also grants a two-year Scrum Alliance membership and a digital badge.

    What is the next step after CSM?

    The next level is the Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM), covering advanced facilitation, coaching and stakeholder engagement. CSM is the mandatory prerequisite, and A-CSM also asks for at least 12 months in a Scrum Master role after earning your CSM.
