Skills You Will Build Across DMAICDMAIC End to End

This Black Belt programme builds advanced statistical, Lean and project-leadership capability across all five DMAIC phases. By the end, you can lead complex improvement projects and sustain measurable quality and cost gains.

    Define and Scope High-Impact Projects

    Measure Processes with Statistical Rigour

Map processes with SIPOC and value stream maps, run measurement system analysis and Gage R&R, and assess process capability so decisions rest on reliable, accurate data rather than assumptions.

    Analyse Root Causes Using Data

Apply inferential statistics and hypothesis testing, including t-tests, ANOVA and chi-squared, to confirm the real drivers of variation and separate vital few causes from the trivial many.

    Improve with Regression and Experiments

Use simple and multiple regression and Design of Experiments, including full and fractional factorial designs, to model relationships and identify the settings that deliver the best process outcomes.

    Control Gains with SPC

Sustain improvements using Statistical Process Control charts such as I-MR, Xbar-R and P charts, plus control and response plans, so the gains you deliver hold over the long term.

Lead Lean and Mentor Green Belts

Integrate Lean tools such as 5S, Kanban and Poka-Yoke within DMAIC, lead complex improvement projects full time, and coach Green Belts toward consistent, repeatable results.

    Exam

What is the format of the Black Belt exam?

The exam is a closed-book, multiple-choice examination based on the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Body of Knowledge, structured around the five DMAIC phases. A reference document with the required formulas and tables is provided during the exam.

How many questions are on the exam and how long is it?

The exam has 150 multiple-choice questions and a duration of four hours (240 minutes). Some exam forms include up to 15 additional unscored pretest questions. Non-native speakers may be allowed an extra 60 minutes.

What is the passing score for the Black Belt exam?

The minimum passing score is 580 points out of 750. Questions are spread across the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control phases, so broad mastery across all five phases is the best way to prepare.

What is the Exam Application Process?

You purchase a Black Belt exam voucher through IASSC, then choose your delivery mode. You can sit the exam online via on-demand proctoring 24/7, or at a Pearson VUE test centre. An optional non-proctored evaluation exam is available to check your readiness first.

Are there prerequisites to sit the Black Belt exam?

No. There are no education, work-experience or prior-certification requirements to sit the exam. Training and real-world project experience are recommended but entirely optional.

What if I do not pass on the first attempt?

If you do not pass, you can retake the exam by purchasing a new voucher. Our trainers help you target weak areas with practice questions and mock exams so you go into your next attempt better prepared.

    Course Content

What topics does the Black Belt training cover?

The training covers all five DMAIC phases: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. This includes process mapping, measurement system analysis, hypothesis testing, regression, Design of Experiments, Lean tools and Statistical Process Control.

How many hours of training are included?

The programme includes 40 hours of live virtual, instructor-led training. Sessions combine concept explanations, hands-on exercises and practice questions so you build both exam readiness and practical capability.

Will I learn advanced statistics and Design of Experiments?

Yes. Advanced statistics is the defining content of Black Belt level. You learn hypothesis testing, ANOVA, regression and Design of Experiments, including full and fractional factorial designs, which separate Black Belt skills from Green Belt.

Are practice tests and materials included?

Yes. You receive courseware, practice questions and full-length mock exams mapped to the 150-question format, plus exercises and case studies that help you identify weak areas and build confidence before exam day.

Is the courseware aligned to the latest Body of Knowledge?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the IASSC Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Body of Knowledge, structured around the five DMAIC phases, so what you study reflects the competencies the exam tests.
