Why Saskatchewan Employers Need Certified Black Belts

    Capital Discipline in Mining

Record potash and uranium output has not eased cost pressure. Producers near Saskatoon need Black Belts who can optimise processes and protect margins as capital spending is scrutinised.

Black Belt builds process optimisation skills

    Scaling Major Mine Builds

BHP's Jansen potash project and similar builds add hundreds of permanent roles, demanding rigorous process design, defect control and operational readiness at full scale.

Black Belt builds operational readiness skills

    Agri-Food Quality and Yield

Saskatchewan's canola, pulse and food-processing sectors face tight quality and yield targets, where DMAIC and statistical control directly reduce waste, rework and variation.

    Advanced Improvement Talent Gap

The province is deep in operators but thin in certified Black Belts who can run statistical projects. The credential and its rigour make holders rare and sought-after.

Black Belt makes certified leaders stand out

    Energy and Utility Reliability

Utility and energy operators need reliable, efficient plant operations, where statistical process control and Lean controls cut downtime and sustain performance over time.

Black Belt builds SPC and Lean control skills

    Diversifying into Critical Minerals

With copper, zinc and lithium production beginning in 2026, new operations need improvement leaders to stabilise and scale unfamiliar workflows from day one.

    Exam

What is the format of the Black Belt exam?

The Black Belt exam is a closed-book, multiple-choice exam of 150 questions, each worth one mark. Some forms include up to 15 additional unscored questions. A reference document with formulas and tables is provided during the exam.

How long is the exam and what is the passing score?

You have four hours (240 minutes) to complete the exam, with an extra 60 minutes available for non-native speakers or candidates with a disability. The passing score is 580 out of 750 points.

What is the exam application process?

There is no formal application or panel review. You purchase an exam voucher from the certification body, choose online proctored or Pearson VUE test-centre delivery, schedule your slot, and sit the 150-question exam. Training is recommended but not required to register.

Are there prerequisites to sit the Black Belt exam?

Are practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and full-length mock exams that mirror the 150-question, four-hour closed-book format, helping you identify weak areas and build exam confidence.

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Body of Knowledge, structured around the five DMAIC phases of Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control.

Can a beginner take this course?
