What Is Kaizen and Why It Matters for South African TeamsUntitledA Practical Guide to Continuous Improvement

Kaizen training in South Africa is a one-day, non-certification skills programme that teaches you to apply Kaizen, the Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement, to eliminate waste and improve everyday processes. The word combines kai (change) and zen (good or better), meaning change for the better through small, incremental, team-based improvements made consistently by everyone. Kaizen was developed within the Toyota Production System and brought to a wider business audience by Masaaki Imai in his 1986 book Kaizen: The Key to Japan's Competitive Success. It sits at the heart of Lean management, Six Sigma and Total Quality Management. The training grounds you in the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, the Gemba principle of going to see the actual work, and the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME). Designed for professionals in manufacturing, mining, FMCG, logistics and services, the course moves from the Kaizen mindset through planning and facilitating a Kaizen event to sustaining improvements with 5S and standard work. Hands-on simulation exercises run throughout, so you leave able to lead real improvement on your own processes. Start building a continuous improvement habit with Invensis Learning.

Positioned for continuous improvement and operations roles that pay well in South Africa

    Today

Limited toolkit beyond experience and intuition

    After Kaizen training

Fluent in PDCA, 5S, Gemba walks, root cause analysis and standard work

    Today

Gains fade once project attention moves elsewhere

    After Kaizen training

Able to sustain results with audits, visual management and daily Kaizen

    You master Kaizen

    Before

Improvement depends on ad hoc fixes that quietly slip back

    Now you have

A repeatable Kaizen method that locks gains in with standard work

    Before

You spot waste but lack a structured way to remove it

    Now you have

A clear route to run Kaizen events that cut the eight wastes

    Before

Improvement ideas stay stuck with a few managers

    Now you have

Skills to engage the whole team in daily continuous improvement

    Before

Your value is tied to firefighting the same recurring issues

The Kaizen Skills You Will BuildPractical Continuous Improvement Tools

This Kaizen training builds hands-on skills across the full improvement cycle, so you can plan, run and sustain Kaizen events on your own processes. By the end you will be able to see waste, find root causes, redesign the work, and hold the gains.

Apply the Kaizen Philosophy and PDCA Cycle

Skills covered in Kaizen training start with the mindset: understand Kaizen as change for the better and use the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle to move from a defined problem to a tested countermeasure to a standardised improvement.

See and Eliminate the Eight Wastes

Identify Muda, Mura and Muri at the Gemba and categorise the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME): defects, overproduction, waiting, non-utilised talent, transportation, inventory, motion and extra processing, then target what matters most.

Plan and Facilitate a Kaizen Event

Select the right target using performance data, set specific and measurable objectives, assemble a cross-functional team, and prepare baseline data so a structured Kaizen event delivers real results in its timeframe.

Use Core Kaizen and Lean Tools

Apply 5S workplace organisation, standard work, spaghetti diagrams, 5 Whys, Fishbone diagrams and cycle-time analysis to map, analyse and redesign the way work actually flows through a process.

Run a Gemba Walk and Root Cause Analysis

Go and see the actual work, map the current state, and drill to root cause so your countermeasures fix the underlying problem rather than the symptom, and improvements hold over time.

Sustain Gains and Build a CI Culture

Lock in improvements with standard work, visual management, the Kaizen newspaper and 30-60-90 day audits, and embed daily Kaizen so continuous improvement becomes a team habit, not a one-off project.

Kaizen training suits operations and production managers, team leaders, quality engineers, Lean coordinators, supervisors and process improvement professionals. It is relevant to any sector where teams want structured, sustainable improvement, from automotive plants to warehouses and service operations.

Is Kaizen training recognised by employers in South Africa?

Yes. Continuous improvement and Lean skills are in demand across South African employers, and OEMs such as Toyota and Ford expect suppliers to practise Kaizen. The methodology underpins Lean, Six Sigma and operational excellence programmes valued by manufacturers and FMCG businesses.

Do I need prior Lean experience to take this course?

No prior experience is required. The course introduces all relevant concepts from first principles, so beginners can follow along while experienced practitioners deepen their facilitation skills. Some familiarity with Lean is helpful but not necessary.

How is Kaizen different from other improvement approaches?

Kaizen relies on many small, continuous improvements made by everyone, rather than large, infrequent transformations. It is people-driven and sustainable, using the PDCA cycle and Gemba observation. This complements innovation and sits at the heart of the Toyota Production System and Lean management.

    Pricing

How much does Kaizen training cost in South Africa?

Fees depend on the delivery mode, group size and format, so pricing is available on request. The training fee covers the full one-day programme, learning materials and a course completion certificate. Request a quote or speak with a learning advisor for current pricing in your region.

What is included in the Kaizen course fee?

The fee typically includes instructor-led delivery of all six Kaizen modules, hands-on simulation exercises, course materials and reference guides, learner support, and a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning. Ask about corporate inclusions for group bookings.

Do you offer group or corporate pricing?

Yes. We offer corporate and group pricing for teams, with customised onsite or live virtual delivery for PMOs, plants and business units. Volume-based rates apply. Contact us for a tailored group quote for your organisation.

Is there a separate exam or certification fee?

No. Kaizen training is a non-certification skills course with no examination and no external awarding body, so there is no separate exam or certification fee. You pay only the training fee and receive a course completion certificate on finishing.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, with instalment options on selected plans. For corporate bookings we can arrange invoicing. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you.

    Certification

Is there an exam for the Kaizen training?

No. Kaizen training is a non-certification course with no examination. Learning is reinforced through hands-on workshop simulation exercises, team activities and group discussion during the one-day programme, so you practise the methodology rather than sit a test.

Do I receive a certificate after the training?

Yes. You receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning after completing the programme. This is a record of completion, not a formal credential from an awarding body, because Kaizen has no external certifying organisation.

    How is my learning assessed?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, hands-on Kaizen event simulations and team exercises run throughout the day so you apply the tools as you learn them. This practical approach builds skills you can use at work immediately.

Is Kaizen a certification or a skills course?

Kaizen training is a practical skills course, not a certification. It builds facilitation and continuous improvement capability grounded in the Toyota Production System and Lean practice, without an exam, governing body or renewal requirement.

How long does the Kaizen training take?

The programme runs for one day (8 hours), covering the Kaizen philosophy, the PDCA cycle, planning and running a Kaizen event, Kaizen tools in practice, and sustaining improvements. A half-day format across two sessions is also available.

    Course Content

What topics does the Kaizen training cover?

The course covers the Kaizen philosophy and mindset, the PDCA cycle, Gemba, Muda, Mura and Muri, the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME), planning and running a Kaizen event, 5S, standard work and sustaining improvements, across six modules in one day.

What tools will I learn to use?

You will learn to apply 5S, standard work, spaghetti diagrams, 5 Whys, Fishbone diagrams, cycle-time analysis and the Kaizen newspaper. These tools support root cause analysis, process redesign and action tracking within a Kaizen event.

    Are there hands-on exercises?

Yes. Hands-on workshop simulation exercises run throughout the one-day programme. You practise planning and facilitating elements of a Kaizen event using realistic process scenarios, so the concepts translate into workplace skill.

Is the course suitable for service and office environments?

Yes. While Kaizen originated in manufacturing, its principles apply in healthcare, logistics, financial services, IT and any environment where teams want continuous improvement. The tools work equally well on administrative and service processes.

    What materials are provided?

You receive structured course materials covering all six modules, reference guides, and templates and aids used in the simulation exercises. These support your learning during the session and act as references when you run Kaizen events at work.

Can I book training for my team onsite?
