What Is Quality Function Deployment and How Does It Work?UntitledFrom Customer Voice to Design Specification

Quality Function Deployment Training in Malawi introduces Quality Function Deployment (QFD), a structured, customer-driven method for turning the Voice of the Customer into precise engineering and process specifications. Developed in Japan by Yoji Akao and Shigeru Mizuno and first applied at the Kobe Shipyard, QFD gives product, design and quality teams a repeatable way to build products customers actually want. Over a focused one-day (8 hour) programme, you learn to capture customer requirements, build and interpret the House of Quality matrix, resolve design trade-offs, and cascade decisions through product planning, parts deployment, process planning and production planning. Hands-on House of Quality exercises run throughout, so you leave able to apply the method at work. This is a practical skills course with no formal assessment. Participants receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning and immediately usable QFD capability for new product development, service design and Six Sigma projects across Malawi's growing manufacturing base.

Why Malawi's Manufacturers Need Customer-Driven Design

    Agro-Processing Modernisation

Malawi's food, sugar, tea and tobacco processors are adding value locally and need structured methods to turn customer needs into products that meet export standards.

    QFD builds customer-to-design translation skills

    Rising Quality Compliance Demands

The Malawi Bureau of Standards and export markets are tightening quality requirements, so firms need design tools that build quality in rather than inspect it later.

QFD designs quality in from the first requirement

    New Product Development Pressure

Consumer goods and beverage makers face growing competition, and QFD helps teams get products right the first time by grounding design in real customer priorities.

QFD helps teams launch products customers want

    Costly Late Design Changes

Small manufacturers cannot absorb rework. The House of Quality and its correlation roof reveal design conflicts early, before expensive production mistakes occur.

    QFD surfaces design conflicts early

Weak Voice of the Customer Capture

Many SMEs still design on assumption. QFD gives a repeatable way to gather, structure and prioritise real customer requirements before design begins.

QFD makes customer needs visible and traceable

Skills Gap in Design for Quality

Malawi has a deep operator base but few professionals trained to link customer needs to engineering specifications, a gap this training directly fills.

Yes. As Malawi's food, beverage, textile and agro-processing firms modernise under the ATMM strategy, employers increasingly need people who can design quality in from the start. QFD skills support roles such as quality engineer, product development engineer and quality assurance manager.

The course suits product designers, design and quality engineers, product managers, marketing and R&D professionals, and Six Sigma practitioners. Anyone who translates customer requirements into product or service specifications will benefit.

No. There are no formal prerequisites. The course introduces QFD and the House of Quality from first principles. Familiarity with product development or quality concepts is helpful but not required.

The programme runs for one day (8 hours) and covers QFD foundations, Voice of the Customer capture, full House of Quality construction, matrix interpretation, four-phase cascading, and QFD in Six Sigma and services, with hands-on exercises throughout.

    General

What is Quality Function Deployment training?

Quality Function Deployment training is a practical, one-day skills course that teaches QFD, a customer-driven method for turning the Voice of the Customer into engineering and process specifications. You learn to build and interpret the House of Quality and cascade design decisions from planning through to production.

Is QFD training worth it for professionals in Malawi?

Yes. As Malawi's food, beverage, textile and agro-processing firms modernise under the ATMM strategy, employers increasingly need people who can design quality in from the start. QFD skills support roles such as quality engineer, product development engineer and quality assurance manager.

Who should attend this QFD course?

The course suits product designers, design and quality engineers, product managers, marketing and R&D professionals, and Six Sigma practitioners. Anyone who translates customer requirements into product or service specifications will benefit.

Do I need prior experience to learn QFD?

No. There are no formal prerequisites. The course introduces QFD and the House of Quality from first principles. Familiarity with product development or quality concepts is helpful but not required.

How long is the QFD training?

The programme runs for one day (8 hours) and covers QFD foundations, Voice of the Customer capture, full House of Quality construction, matrix interpretation, four-phase cascading, and QFD in Six Sigma and services, with hands-on exercises throughout.

    Pricing

How much does QFD training cost in Malawi?

Pricing varies by delivery format and group size, and is available on request. Live online, classroom and corporate onsite options are available. Request a quote from a learning advisor for current figures.

What is included in the QFD course fee?

The fee typically includes instructor-led training, structured courseware, hands-on House of Quality exercises, learning resources and templates, learner support, and a course completion record from Invensis Learning.

Do you offer corporate or group pricing?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for product, quality and engineering teams. Contact us for a tailored quote for your organisation.

    Are there payment options available?

Yes. We accept common payment methods and can discuss options for individual and corporate bookings. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the arrangement that suits you.

Is there any separate assessment or credential fee?

    Assessment

Is QFD training a certification course?

No. It is a practical, non-certification skills programme. There is no formal assessment and no external credential. On completion you receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning.

Will I receive anything on completing the training?

Yes. Participants receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning, along with practical QFD capability they can apply immediately to product development, service design and quality projects.

How is learning assessed during the course?

Learning is reinforced through hands-on House of Quality construction exercises, case study examples and team activities rather than a formal test. You build and interpret your own QFD matrices during the day.

Does QFD have a governing or awarding body?

No. QFD is an established methodology developed in Japan by Yoji Akao and Shigeru Mizuno, not a credential owned by an awarding body. The training builds practical skills grounded in the recognised QFD body of knowledge.

How current is the QFD method taught?

QFD is a stable, well-established methodology. The course teaches the current, widely used four-phase QFD model and the House of Quality exactly as applied across manufacturing, services and software today.

    Course Content

What topics does the QFD training cover?

The course covers QFD foundations, Voice of the Customer capture, the affinity diagram and Kano model, the six rooms of the House of Quality, matrix interpretation, four-phase cascading, and QFD in Six Sigma and service design.

What is the House of Quality?

The House of Quality is the central QFD planning matrix. It links customer requirements to measurable engineering characteristics, scores their relationships, benchmarks competitors and sets design targets, all anchored to customer priorities.

Are there hands-on exercises in the course?

Yes. You build a complete House of Quality from a realistic product or service scenario, structure the Voice of the Customer, apply the Kano model, calculate column importance and identify design hot spots and conflicts.

Does QFD apply to services as well as products?

Yes. While QFD began in manufacturing, the course covers its use in services such as healthcare, financial services and IT, and in software development. The method fits any context where customer needs become design specifications.

Is QFD useful for Six Sigma projects?

Yes. QFD is a core tool in Design for Six Sigma (DMADV Measure phase) and in the DMAIC Define phase, translating the Voice of the Customer into critical-to-quality requirements and project priorities.
