Is the CSM recognised internationally?

Yes. The Certified ScrumMaster is the world's most widely recognised Scrum Master credential, with over one million certificates issued. Scrum Alliance operates globally, so the credential is valued by employers in Macedonia, the EU and beyond.

How long is the CSM certification valid?

CSM is valid for two years. To renew it, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) within the two-year cycle and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee. SEUs can be earned through training, conferences, coaching and self-study.

What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 60 minutes. It is open book and taken online through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved CSM course. No proctor is required.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

The passing score is 74 percent, meaning you must answer at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. Focus on broad understanding across all six topic areas of the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives.

Do I need to attend a course before taking the exam?

Yes. Attendance at an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer is mandatory. The exam cannot be accessed until you complete the course, after which it unlocks in your Scrum Alliance member portal.

How many attempts do I get and how long do I have?

Candidates typically have up to three attempts to pass the CSM exam within 90 days of completing the course. Verify the current attempt policy with Scrum Alliance before you sit the exam.

Which standard is the CSM exam based on?

The exam is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and aligned to the current Scrum Guide (the November 2020 edition) by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, covering Scrum theory, values, the team, events, artifacts and the Scrum Master role.

Course Content

What will I learn in the CSM course?

You will learn the Scrum framework end to end: empiricism and the three pillars, the five Scrum values, the Scrum team's accountabilities, how to facilitate all five Scrum events, how to steward the three artifacts, and how to lead as a servant-leader Scrum Master.

What topics are covered in the training?

The training covers the six CSM topic areas from the Scrum Alliance Learning Objectives: Scrum theory and principles, Scrum values, the Scrum team, Scrum events, Scrum artifacts, and the Scrum Master role, plus facilitation and coaching techniques.

Are practice questions and mock assessments included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions mapped to the 50-question, open-book exam format, along with knowledge checks and exercises, so you can identify weak areas and build readiness before you sit the Scrum Alliance exam.

How long is the CSM training and how is it delivered?

The CSM programme runs for 16 hours of instruction, delivered as two full days or four half-days depending on the schedule. It is offered live virtual (online) and as onsite corporate training, led by a Certified Scrum Trainer.

Is the courseware aligned with the latest Scrum Guide?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current Scrum Guide (November 2020 edition) and the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives, so you study the up-to-date Scrum framework, including the Product Goal and the commitments for each artifact.
