How long is the CSM certification valid?

What is the next step after the CSM?

The Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) is the next level in the Scrum Alliance Scrum Master track, covering advanced facilitation, coaching and stakeholder engagement. The CSM is the mandatory prerequisite, and A-CSM also expects experience in a Scrum Master role.

What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam is an open-book, online, multiple-choice test taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide.

How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 60 minutes. It is taken online, is open book, and does not require a proctor.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

You need 74% to pass, which is at least 37 correct answers out of 50. Because the exam is open book and drawn from the Scrum Guide, thorough understanding of the framework is the best preparation.

What if I do not pass the CSM exam first time?

Candidates typically have up to three attempts within 90 days of completing the course. Our trainers provide exam guidance and practice questions so you go in prepared, and you can retake within that window if needed.

Do I need to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

Yes. Attendance at an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer is mandatory. The online exam is unlocked only after you complete the course, and you have 90 days to sit it through the Scrum Alliance portal.

What topics are covered in the CSM training?

The course covers the six CSM areas from the Learning Objectives: Scrum theory and principles, the Scrum values, the Scrum team, the Scrum events, the Scrum artifacts and the Scrum Master role, all aligned to the current Scrum Guide.

Do I need prior experience to take the CSM course?

No. There is no formal education or work-experience requirement, so the CSM suits people new to Scrum as well as those formalising existing knowledge. The trainer builds up from Scrum fundamentals, so beginners are well supported.

How long is the CSM course and what materials are provided?

The CSM course is a 16-hour programme, delivered as two full days or four half-days, which exceeds the Scrum Alliance minimum. You receive Scrum Alliance aligned courseware, case studies, practice questions and exam guidance.

Is the courseware aligned with the latest Scrum Guide?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current Scrum Guide (November 2020) and the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives, so you learn the framework exactly as Scrum teams apply it today.

Will I receive proof of completion and membership?

Yes. After you complete the course and pass the online exam, Scrum Alliance issues your CSM certificate and digital badge and includes a two-year Scrum Alliance membership with a listing in the certification directory.
