    Do I need experience to enrol?

    No prior Scrum experience is required. The CSM course is designed for those new to Scrum as well as practitioners who want to formalise existing knowledge, and it is delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer who guides you through every concept.

    How long is the CSM certification valid?

    CSM is valid for two years. To renew, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee within each two-year cycle. SEUs can be earned through courses, conferences, coaching and self-study.

    What is the next step after CSM?

    The Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) is the next level in the Scrum Alliance Scrum Master track, covering advanced facilitation and coaching. CSM is the mandatory prerequisite, and A-CSM also requires at least 12 months in a Scrum Master role.

    What is the format of the CSM exam?

    The CSM exam is an online, open-book, multiple-choice test taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete the course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide, updated in November 2020.

    How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

    The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 60 minutes. It is taken online without a proctor within 90 days of completing your approved CSM course.

    What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

    You need 74% to pass, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. The open-book format lets you refer to your materials during the exam.

    What if I do not pass the first time?

    You typically have up to three attempts to pass within 90 days of course completion, and the course and practice activities are designed to prepare you for a first-attempt pass. Verify the current attempt policy at scrumalliance.org.

    Do I have to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

    Yes. Attendance at an approved CSM course delivered by a Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) is mandatory, and the exam cannot be accessed without completing the course.

    Which Scrum standard is the exam based on?

    The exam is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide (November 2020), which introduced the Product Goal and defined the three Scrum commitments.

    What topics does the CSM course cover?

    The course covers six areas from the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum team, the five Scrum events, the three Scrum artefacts, and the Scrum Master role.

    Can a beginner take this course?

    Yes. No prior experience is required. The course starts with Scrum theory and empiricism and builds up to facilitation and coaching, so beginners and experienced practitioners both benefit.

    How long is the CSM training?

    The CSM programme runs for 16 hours of instruction, delivered as two full days or four half-days depending on the schedule, and it exceeds the Scrum Alliance minimum course requirement.

    You receive Scrum Alliance aligned courseware, case studies on facilitation and impediment removal, practice activities, and guidance on sitting the online exam and renewing your credential.

    Is the courseware aligned to the latest Scrum Guide?
