What is the CSM certification and who is it for?

Is the CSM worth it for professionals in Hong Kong?

Yes. CSM is the most widely recognised Scrum Master credential, valued by Hong Kong's banks, insurers, fintechs and technology firms. Certified Scrum Masters are in strong demand as employers scale agile and digital transformation, with roles spanning Scrum Master to Agile Coach.

Do I need to attend a course to earn the CSM?

Yes. Attendance at a Scrum Alliance approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) is mandatory. The online exam cannot be accessed until you complete the course.

How long is the CSM certification valid?

CSM is valid for two years. To renew, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee every two years.

What are the prerequisites for CSM training?

There are no formal education or work experience requirements. CSM suits anyone new to Scrum or wanting to formalise existing knowledge. You simply attend the approved course, which unlocks the online exam.

What comes after the CSM?

The Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) is the next step in the Scrum Alliance Scrum Master track. CSM is the mandatory prerequisite, and A-CSM also requires at least 12 months in a Scrum Master role.

Is the CSM exam fee included in the training price?

In most cases yes. The CSM exam fee is usually bundled into the course fee paid to the training provider. Confirm this when you enquire so you know exactly what is included.

What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam is an open-book, online, multiple-choice assessment taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete the course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide.

How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

The exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 60 minutes (one hour). It is open book, so you can refer to materials while you answer.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

You need 74% to pass, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly.

How many attempts do I get, and what if I do not pass?

You typically have three attempts to pass within 90 days of completing the course, at no extra cost. Our training and practice materials are designed to help you pass on the first attempt.

When and where do I take the CSM exam?

You take the exam online within 90 days of completing your course, through your Scrum Alliance member account. No proctor or test centre is required, so you can sit it from home or the office.

What topics does the CSM training cover?

The training covers all six CSM areas: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum Team, the five Scrum events, the three Scrum artifacts, and the Scrum Master role, aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives.

Can a beginner take this course?

Yes. CSM has no prerequisites and is designed for people new to Scrum as well as those formalising existing knowledge. Trainers guide you through the framework with practical, real-world examples.

Which standard is the courseware based on?

The courseware is aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide (Schwaber and Sutherland, November 2020 edition).

How long is the CSM course?

The instructor-led programme runs for 16 hours, delivered as two full days or four half-days, meeting Scrum Alliance course requirements. You also work through practical exercises and case studies.

What materials and support are included?

You receive Scrum Alliance-aligned courseware, case studies, practice guidance for the online exam, and post-training support, plus a two-year Scrum Alliance membership on passing.
