Build a Risk Strategy and Plan

Skills covered in the PMI-RMP begin here: establish the risk approach, framework and governance for a project. You will analyse the project environment with SWOT, PESTLE and prompt lists, confirm risk thresholds with stakeholders, and document a tailored risk management plan aligned to predictive, agile or hybrid delivery.

    Identify Threats and Opportunities

Facilitate structured risk identification using brainstorming, the Delphi technique, nominal group technique, interviews and checklist analysis. You will record risks in a clear cause-risk-effect format, test assumptions and constraints, and validate the risk register with the team and stakeholders.

    Run Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis

Prioritise risks with a probability and impact matrix, then apply quantitative techniques such as Monte Carlo simulation, decision-tree analysis, sensitivity analysis and expected monetary value. You will use tornado diagrams, heat maps and S-curves to communicate exposure to decision-makers.

    Plan and Implement Risk Responses

Develop response strategies for threats (avoid, transfer, mitigate, accept) and opportunities (exploit, share, enhance, accept). You will assign owners, set triggers, build contingency and fallback plans, and fold reserves into the project schedule and budget.

    Monitor, Report and Close Risks

Track identified, residual and secondary risks against thresholds, run periodic risk reviews, and produce risk status reports for governance bodies. You will activate contingency plans when triggers fire and formally close risks with lessons learned at project closure.

Manage Risk in Agile and Hybrid Projects

Apply the January 2022 ECO's coverage of adaptive delivery to manage uncertainty in agile and hybrid environments. You will integrate risk activities into iterative planning and connect them to organisational risk appetite and reporting.

    Pricing

What is included in the PMI-RMP training fee?

How much does the PMI-RMP exam cost?

PMI bills the exam fee separately under regional pricing, with a lower rate for PMI members and a higher rate for non-members. Membership can reduce the exam and renewal costs. Confirm current figures on pmi.org before you apply, as PMI periodically updates pricing.

    Exam

What is the format of the PMI-RMP exam?

The PMI-RMP exam is closed book with 115 multiple-choice questions, including single-answer and multiple-answer formats. You have 2.5 hours (150 minutes) to complete it, delivered via Pearson VUE OnVUE online proctoring or at a test centre.

What are the PMI-RMP exam domains and weights?

Per the January 2022 ECO there are five domains: Risk Strategy and Planning (20%), Risk Identification (20%), Risk Analysis (23%), Risk Response (22%) and Monitor and Close Risks (15%). Together they total 100% of the exam.

What are the eligibility requirements for the PMI-RMP?

PMI offers three routes. With a secondary diploma: 36 months of risk experience in the last 5 years plus 40 hours of risk education. With a bachelor's degree: 24 months plus 30 hours. With a GAC-accredited degree: 12 months plus 30 hours. Experience must be specific to project risk management.

What is the passing score and how many attempts do I get?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score rather than a fixed percentage, reporting results by domain. You get up to three attempts within the one-year eligibility period that begins when your application is approved.

What if I do not pass on the first attempt?

You can retake the exam up to three times within your one-year eligibility window, with a reexamination fee for the second and third attempts. Our practice questions and trainer guidance are designed to help you prepare thoroughly for a first-time pass.
