Is the CSM recognised internationally?

Yes. The Certified ScrumMaster is the world's most widely recognised Scrum Master credential, with over one million certificates issued. Scrum Alliance operates globally across all industries, so your CSM travels with you across sectors and countries.

How long is the CSM certification valid?

The CSM is valid for two years. To renew, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee within each two-year cycle. SEUs can be earned through courses, conferences, coaching and self-study.

What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam is an open-book, online, multiple-choice test taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. No proctor is required, and it is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the 2020 Scrum Guide.

How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 60 minutes (one hour). It is open book, so you can refer to materials while you answer.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

The passing score is 74%, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. The course prepares you thoroughly across all six CSM topic areas so you can pass with confidence.

What if I do not pass the CSM exam the first time?

You have up to three attempts to pass within 90 days of completing your course, and the exam is open book. Our training and practice guidance are designed to help you pass on your first attempt, so the extra attempts are a safety net rather than the plan.

Do I need to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

Yes. Attendance at an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer is mandatory. The Scrum Alliance online exam cannot be accessed until you complete the course, and you then have 90 days to sit it.

What topics does the CSM training cover?

The training covers the six CSM topic areas: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum Team, the Scrum events, the Scrum artifacts, and the Scrum Master role, all aligned to the current CSM Learning Objectives and the 2020 Scrum Guide.

Can a beginner take the CSM course?

Yes. The CSM is an entry-level certification with no formal education or work experience requirement. The course starts from Scrum fundamentals, so beginners and those formalising existing Scrum knowledge can both follow along comfortably.

How long is the CSM training and how is it delivered?

The CSM course is a 16-hour programme delivered live virtual or onsite by a Certified Scrum Trainer, which meets the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hours requirement. It can run as two full days or four half-days depending on the schedule.

What learning materials are provided?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the 2020 Scrum Guide by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, which introduced the Product Goal and the commitments for each artifact.
