Why Sydney's Construction Market Needs PMI-CP Skills

    Accredited Talent Shortage

Australia faces a shortage of skilled construction workers heading to 2027, and the sharpest gap is accredited, construction-specific project managers who can lead delivery from day one on Sydney sites.

PMI-CP makes certified construction leaders stand out

    Mega-Project Delivery Pressure

Sydney Metro West and Western Sydney International Airport run billions in concurrent works, demanding contract, stakeholder and governance discipline that certified construction professionals are hired to provide.

PMI-CP builds contract and stakeholder skills at scale

    Contract and Claims Complexity

Large NSW projects generate variations, delay claims and disputes that erode margins. Contract administration and claims skill, the biggest PMI-CP domain, is exactly what employers now screen for.

PMI-CP centres on Contracts Management at 50 percent

    Stakeholder and Community Demands

Dense urban builds in Sydney must manage owners, regulators, residents and utilities at once. Weak engagement stalls approvals and programmes, so structured stakeholder skill is in strong demand.

    PMI-CP strengthens stakeholder engagement capability

    Cost and Schedule Overruns

Material cost pressure and tight capital discipline expose projects that lack scope, schedule and earned-value control. Construction leaders who govern delivery protect budgets and timelines.

PMI-CP builds scope, schedule and cost control

    Fragmented Governance on Complex Builds

Multiple contractors and interfaces on major Sydney projects create governance gaps that cause rework and risk. Clear reporting, document control and oversight keep complex delivery accountable.

Skills You Will Master in This ProgrammeMapped to the Four PMI-CP Domains

This programme builds the practical, exam-ready capability the PMI-CP validates, mapped to its four domains. By the end you can manage construction contracts, engage stakeholders, control scope and cost, and govern delivery on complex projects.

    Construction Contracts and Delivery Methods

Assess contract types and delivery methods such as lump sum, cost-plus, GMP, design-build and EPC, and advise on the risk allocation behind each. This is the heart of the PMI-CP, whose largest domain, Contracts Management, carries 50 percent of the exam.

    Contract Administration, Claims and Disputes

Administer payments, variations and notices, manage subcontracts, and handle delay, disruption and differing-site-condition claims through negotiation, mediation and adjudication, then close out contracts, bonds and defects cleanly.

    Stakeholder Engagement and Communications

Identify and engage owners, designers, regulators and communities, run the communications plan, and keep a project's social licence to operate intact. Stakeholder Engagement is the second-largest PMI-CP domain at 30 percent.

    Strategy, Scope and Change Control

Define the project execution plan, baseline scope and the work breakdown structure, and operate a disciplined change process so scope creep and variations are controlled rather than absorbed into cost and programme.

Schedule, Cost, Risk and Quality Control

Build and track the master schedule with critical path method, apply earned value to cost and schedule, manage contingency and risk, and run quality assurance and non-conformance management across the construction lifecycle.

    Project Governance and Compliance

Set up governance structures, reporting and document control, support audits and health checks, and keep delivery compliant with codes, standards and ethics. Project Governance completes the four PMI-CP domains at 5 percent.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

The PMI-CP is PMI's specialist credential for the construction industry. It validates your ability to manage contracts, stakeholders, scope and governance across four domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). It suits construction project managers, site managers and owner's representatives.

    General

What is the PMI-CP certification and who is it for?

The PMI-CP is PMI's specialist credential for the construction industry. It validates your ability to manage contracts, stakeholders, scope and governance across four domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). It suits construction project managers, site managers and owner's representatives.

Is the PMI-CP worth it for construction professionals in Sydney?

Yes. With Sydney Metro West, Western Sydney International Airport and a record NSW pipeline competing for accredited talent, construction project managers in Sydney average around AU$142,216, and certified leaders stand out. The PMI-CP proves construction-specific skill that tier-one contractors actively hire for.

Is PMP required before taking the PMI-CP?

No. PMP certification is not a prerequisite for the PMI-CP. You can apply based on your construction project management experience and education. The two are complementary, with PMP covering general project management and PMI-CP validating construction-specific expertise.

How is the PMI-CP different from the PMP?

PMP is a broad project management credential across all industries and approaches. The PMI-CP focuses only on construction, with its largest domain being Contracts Management at 50 percent, reflecting how central contracts, administration and disputes are to construction delivery. Many construction managers hold both.

How long is the PMI-CP certification valid?

The PMI-CP is valid for three years from the date of certification. To maintain it, you earn 60 PDUs across the PMI Talent Triangle within each three-year cycle, with a minimum of eight PDUs in each of the three areas.

    Pricing

How much does PMI-CP training cost in Sydney?

Fees vary by format, so training in Sydney is available on request. Live online and classroom options are priced separately, and the PMI exam fee is billed by PMI in USD under regional pricing, not as part of the training. Request a quote for current Sydney pricing.

What is included in the PMI-CP course fee?

The training fee typically includes PMI-aligned courseware, practice questions, mock exams, downloadable templates, guidance on the four prerequisite modules and PMI application, learner support, and a course completion certificate with contact hours. Talk to a learning advisor for full inclusions.

Is the PMI-CP exam fee included in the training price?

No. PMI bills the PMI-CP exam fee separately in USD under regional pricing. PMI membership reduces the exam fee and gives access to PMI resources. Confirm current member and non-member fees on the PMI store before you apply.

Do you offer corporate or group discounts for PMI-CP training?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for construction and infrastructure teams across Sydney and NSW. Ask about corporate and group pricing for a tailored quote.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, and offer instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you and to see upcoming batches.

    Exam

What is the format of the PMI-CP exam?

The PMI-CP exam is closed book with 120 multiple-choice questions in single-answer and multiple-answer formats. It is delivered through Pearson VUE, either online proctored via OnVUE or at a Pearson VUE test centre, and is based on the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline (ECO).

What are the PMI-CP exam domains and their weights?

The exam covers four domains from the current ECO: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). Contracts Management is by far the largest, so contract administration, claims and disputes carry the most weight.

How many questions are on the exam and how long is it?

The PMI-CP exam has 120 questions and an allotted time of 230 minutes, which is 3 hours and 50 minutes. It is a closed-book, multiple-choice exam based on the PMI-CP ECO and construction project management practice.

What is the passing score for the PMI-CP exam?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score that is not published as a fixed number. Results are reported as pass or fail with domain-level feedback of Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement, so aim for broad mastery across all four domains.

What if I do not pass the first time, and how many attempts do I get?

You get up to three attempts within the one-year eligibility period from application approval. Our training includes practice questions and mock exams to build readiness, and re-examination fees apply to later attempts, payable to PMI.

What are the prerequisites and mandatory modules for the PMI-CP?

You must complete four self-paced foundational modules covering project communications, interface management, scope and change order management, and contract and risk management, awarding 56 PDUs. You also need construction project management experience and 35 contact hours of project management education under one of three eligibility sets.

    Course Content

What topics does the PMI-CP training cover?

The training covers the four PMI-CP domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). You learn contract types, administration, claims, stakeholder engagement, scope and change control, schedule, cost, risk, quality and governance.

Does this training meet the 35 contact hours requirement?

The instructor-led programme provides 32 contact hours, which is close to but below PMI's 35 contact hours of project management education. Ask us about supplementary self-study or pre-reading credited toward the full 35-hour requirement before you apply.

What learning resources and materials are provided?

You receive PMI-aligned courseware, references to the PMI-CP Examination Content Outline and Handbook, practice questions mapped to the 120-question format, mock exams, templates and quizzes to reinforce each domain and build exam readiness.

Which standard and ECO is the courseware aligned to?

The courseware aligns to the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline (ECO) and its four construction project management domains, applying project management principles and the current PMBOK Guide within the construction sector.

Can I take this training if I am new to construction project management?

You can enrol in the training at any experience level to build knowledge and contact hours. To sit the PMI-CP exam, PMI requires construction project management experience under one of three eligibility sets, so the credential itself suits mid-to-senior practitioners.

    Enrollment

What are the eligibility requirements for the PMI-CP?

Anyone can enrol in the training. To sit the exam you must complete four mandatory modules and meet one of three sets: high school diploma with 60 months, a bachelor's degree with 36 months, or a GAC-accredited degree with 24 months of construction PM experience, plus 35 contact hours of PM education.

How do I enrol in the PMI-CP course in Sydney?

You can enrol through the Invensis Learning website. Choose your preferred format, complete payment, and you receive access to schedules, courseware and learning resources. See upcoming batches or talk to a learning advisor to get started.

    What training formats are available?

We offer live online instructor-led training, classroom training, and customised corporate group training delivered on-site or live virtual across Sydney and NSW. Choose the format that best fits your schedule and how your team prefers to learn.

Can I reschedule or transfer my enrolment to another batch?

Yes. Flexi options let you reschedule or transfer to another batch on selected plans. Contact our support team to arrange a change that fits around your project commitments.

What is the refund or cancellation policy?

Refunds and cancellations are handled per our published policy, and selected plans include a money-back guarantee. Reach out to our team for the details that apply to your enrolment before you book.
