Which Scrum Guide edition is the course based on?

The course is aligned to the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, and the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives. This edition introduced the Product Goal and framed the Sprint Goal and Definition of Done as commitments.

How long is the CSM certification valid?

The CSM is valid for two years. To renew, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee within each two-year cycle. SEUs can be earned through training, events, coaching and self-study.

Do I need experience to take the CSM?

No formal education or work experience is required. The CSM suits those new to Scrum as well as team members formalising existing experience. Attendance at an approved course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer is the only prerequisite for the exam.

What is included in the CSM course fee?

Is the exam fee included in the training price?

What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam is an open-book, online, multiple-choice assessment taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete the course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide, with no proctor required.

How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

The exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a 60-minute time limit. It is taken online and is open book, so you can refer to materials while you answer.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

You need 74% to pass, which is 37 of 50 questions correct. Candidates typically have up to three attempts within 90 days of completing the approved course.

What if I do not pass on the first attempt?

You generally have up to three attempts within the 90-day window after course completion, and our training includes practice questions and guidance to help you pass first time. Verify the current attempt policy at scrumalliance.org.

How soon can I take the exam after the course?

You can access the online CSM exam through your Scrum Alliance member portal within 90 days of completing the approved course. There is no separate test centre booking; you sit it online when you are ready.

Course Content

What topics does the CSM course cover?

The course covers six areas from the CSM Learning Objectives: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum team, Scrum events, Scrum artifacts, and the Scrum Master role, all grounded in the current Scrum Guide.

What learning resources are provided?

You receive Scrum Alliance aligned courseware, industry case studies, practice questions and facilitation techniques for Scrum events. The materials support both the exam and applying Scrum on the job.

Is there hands-on practice in the course?

Yes. The programme uses case studies and interactive exercises on facilitation, impediment removal and running Scrum events, so you can apply the framework in realistic team scenarios.

Can a beginner take this course?

Yes. No prior Scrum experience is required. The CST-led sessions build from Scrum theory to practical facilitation, making the course suitable for those new to Scrum and those formalising existing knowledge.

How long is the CSM training?

Invensis Learning delivers the CSM as a 16-hour instructor-led programme, offered as two full days or four half-days. This exceeds the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hours requirement for CSM courses.
