    Which standard is the CSM course based on?

    The course is aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide (November 2020), written by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland. It covers Scrum theory, the five values, the Scrum team, all five events and the three artifacts.

    How long is the CSM certification valid?

    CSM is valid for two years. To renew it, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee within each two-year cycle. SEUs can be earned through courses, conferences, coaching and self-study.

    What is the format of the CSM exam?

    The CSM exam is an open-book, online, multiple-choice test taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the 2020 Scrum Guide, and no proctor is required.

    How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

    The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 60 minutes (1 hour). It is open book, so you can refer to materials during the exam.

    What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

    The passing score is 74 percent, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly.

    What if I do not pass the CSM exam the first time?

    You typically have three attempts to pass within 90 days of completing your course, and our exam preparation is designed to help you pass on the first attempt. Please verify the current attempt policy at scrumalliance.org.

    Do I have to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

    Yes. Scrum Alliance requires attendance at an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) before the exam is unlocked. You then access the online exam through your Scrum Alliance account within 90 days of completing the course.

    What will I learn in the CSM course?

    You will learn Scrum theory and the three pillars, the five Scrum values, the Scrum team accountabilities, all five Scrum events, the three artifacts and their commitments, and the servant-leadership skills of the Scrum Master role, all aligned to the 2020 Scrum Guide.

    Do I need prior experience to take this course?

    No prior experience is required. CSM is a foundational certification with no formal education or work-experience prerequisites, so beginners and experienced team members alike can attend and learn the Scrum framework from the ground up.

    How long is the CSM training?

    The CSM programme is delivered as 16 hours of instruction, arranged as two full days or four half-days depending on the schedule. This meets Scrum Alliance minimum course requirements and is led by a Certified Scrum Trainer.

    Are practical exercises and case studies included?

    Yes. The course uses industry-driven case studies and hands-on facilitation practice covering Scrum events, coaching and impediment removal, so you can apply the framework in realistic delivery scenarios, not just learn the theory.
