The CSM is aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide (November 2020), authored by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland. The 2020 Scrum Guide introduced the Product Goal and framed the Sprint Goal and Definition of Done as commitments.

How long is the CSM certification valid?

The CSM is valid for two years. To renew, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee within each two-year cycle. Passing the exam also includes a two-year Scrum Alliance membership.

The CSM exam is an online, open-book, multiple-choice test taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. It has 50 questions and no proctor is required.

How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a 60-minute (one hour) time limit. It is open book, so you can refer to materials while you answer.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

You need 74% to pass, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. Focus on broad understanding across all six CSM topic areas rather than memorizing single facts.

How many attempts do I get for the CSM exam?

Candidates typically get three attempts to pass within 90 days of completing the course. If you do not pass at first, our trainers and practice questions help you prepare for the next attempt.

Do I need to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

Yes. Attendance at a Scrum Alliance approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer is mandatory, and the online exam unlocks in your Scrum Alliance portal within 90 days of course completion.
