Market Forces Fuelling PgMP Demand in Auckland

    Governance Maturity Gap

Auckland enterprises run dozens of concurrent projects, yet many lack a strategy-aligned programme governance layer. That is the exact gap the PgMP is built to close.

PgMP builds strategic alignment and governance skills

    Strategy-Execution Gap

Boards fund digital and transformation programmes, but weak links between strategy and the delivery mix cause value leakage that certified programme leaders are hired to fix.

PgMP builds prioritisation and benefits skills

    Mega-Infrastructure Complexity

The NZ$5.49 billion City Rail Link and Auckland's wider pipeline demand programme-grade prioritisation, benefits tracking and risk aggregation across many interdependent projects.

PgMP builds programme risk and coordination skills

    Programme Talent Scarcity

New Zealand's PM pool is deep in PMP project managers but thin in credentialed programme managers. PgMP's tough eligibility and panel review keep holders rare and in demand.

PgMP makes certified programme leaders stand out

    Digital Delivery Centralisation

From 2026 the Government Chief Digital Office operates as a new agency, centralising digital investment and delivery and lifting demand for disciplined programme governance.

PgMP builds governance and assurance skills

    Capital-Efficiency Pressure

Margin and capital discipline across banking, technology and infrastructure push Auckland organisations to optimise programmes, stop low-value work and rebalance to strategy.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

The Program Management Professional (PgMP) is PMI's senior credential for professionals who manage multiple related projects as a coordinated programme to deliver strategic benefits. It is designed for programme managers, PMO leaders, directors of delivery and PMP holders stepping up to programme responsibilities.

    General

What is the PgMP certification and who is it for?

The Program Management Professional (PgMP) is PMI's senior credential for professionals who manage multiple related projects as a coordinated programme to deliver strategic benefits. It is designed for programme managers, PMO leaders, directors of delivery and PMP holders stepping up to programme responsibilities.

Is the PgMP worth it for programme managers in Auckland?

Yes. Senior programme roles in Auckland average around NZ$179,000, and with fewer than 3,000 PgMP holders worldwide the credential is a strong differentiator. It signals proven programme governance and benefits skills to banks, IT, government and infrastructure employers.

Is the PgMP recognised in New Zealand?

Yes. PgMP is a globally recognised PMI credential valued by employers across New Zealand and in over 200 countries, including the IT services, banking, government and infrastructure organisations that run large project portfolios.

Do I need a PMP before taking the PgMP?

No. A PMP is not a mandatory prerequisite for the PgMP. However, an active PMP satisfies the project management experience requirement across all three eligibility sets, so PMP holders only need to document their programme management experience.

How long is the PgMP certification valid?

The PgMP is valid for three years. To maintain it, you earn 60 PDUs across the PMI Talent Triangle, with at least 8 PDUs in each area, within every three-year continuing certification requirements cycle.

    Pricing

How much does PgMP training cost in Auckland?

PgMP training fees vary by format and are available on request, so you can pick live online, classroom or corporate delivery. The PMI exam fee is billed separately in USD under regional pricing. Request a quote for current pricing in New Zealand.

What is included in the PgMP course fee?

The training fee typically includes PMI-aligned courseware, practice questions, mock exams, downloadable templates, PgMP application and panel-review support, learner support, and a course completion certificate with 24 contact hours.

Is the PMI exam fee included in the training price?

No. PMI bills the PgMP exam fee separately in USD under regional pricing, around USD 800 for members and USD 1,000 for non-members as a reference. Membership can lower the exam cost. Confirm current fees at pmi.org before applying.

    Exam

What is the format of the PgMP exam?

The PgMP exam is closed book and multiple choice, based on the PgMP Examination Content Outline and the Standard for Program Management, Fourth Edition. Questions are scenario based and spread across the five programme performance domains.

How many questions are on the PgMP exam and how long is it?

The PgMP exam has 170 questions and a four-hour (240 minute) allotted time. Results are reported with domain-level performance feedback rather than a fixed percentage score.

What are the PgMP exam domains and their weights?

There are five domains: Strategic Program Management (11%), Program Life Cycle Management (44%), Benefits Management (11%), Stakeholder Engagement (16%) and Governance (18%), all aligned to the current PgMP Examination Content Outline.

What is the PgMP panel review?

The panel review is a multi-rater assessment unique to the PgMP. A panel of programme management practitioners evaluates your documented experience. It is a mandatory step alongside the written exam, and both must be passed to earn the credential.

What is the passing score and how many attempts do I get?

PMI uses a psychometrically determined passing score that is not published as a fixed number. You get up to three attempts within the one-year eligibility period from application approval, so focus on broad mastery across all five domains.

Where can I sit the PgMP exam in Auckland?

You can sit the exam at a Pearson VUE test centre or via Pearson VUE OnVUE online proctoring from home or the office. Scheduling is done through PMI's portal or the Pearson VUE website.

    Course Content

What topics are covered in the PgMP training?

The training covers the five PgMP performance domains: Strategic Program Management, Program Life Cycle Management, Benefits Management, Stakeholder Engagement and Governance, plus application, panel-review and exam strategy, aligned to the 4th edition standard.

What learning resources and materials are provided?

You receive PMI-aligned courseware, references to the PgMP Examination Content Outline and Handbook, a Standard for Program Management overview, downloadable templates, flashcards and topic-wise quizzes.

Are there practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions, full-length mock exams and topic-wise quizzes mapped to the PgMP Examination Content Outline to help you find weak areas and build exam readiness.

Is the courseware aligned to the latest PgMP standard?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to PMI's Standard for Program Management, Fourth Edition, and the current PgMP Examination Content Outline, so you prepare against the standard the exam is built on.

Can I take PgMP training if I already hold a PMP?

Yes. PgMP training suits PMP holders moving into programme roles. Your active PMP satisfies the project management experience requirement, so the course focuses on programme governance, benefits and preparing your experience for the panel review.

    Enrollment

What are the eligibility requirements for the PgMP?

PMI offers three sets. With a four-year degree you need 48 months of project management experience (or a PMP) plus 48 months of programme experience; with a secondary diploma you need 84 months of programme experience. All applicants complete a panel review.

How do I enrol in the PgMP course?

You can enrol through the Invensis Learning website. Choose your preferred format, complete payment, and you will receive access to schedules, courseware and learning resources. Talk to a learning advisor if you need help choosing.
